If it were me and and it's not a strain financially, I wouldn't accept the money. In my experience watching friends who receive significant amounts (not talking the cell phone bill or something else trivial) from their parents, that money rarely comes without some sort of strings attached. Even if it's a guilt trip around not spending enough time with dear ole grandma, it just wouldn't be worth it to me. But that's me. Everyone can do what they want and be free from the judgement of others.

    That’s exactly my concern.

  2. How do y’all feel about parents helping pay for private school for your child? I am about to be 42 and with an almost 2 year old and he is the only grandchild on both sides so naturally our parents spoil him. When he starts private school in a few years my mother has made the statement several times she wants to help with his school. I said it isn’t necessary but she said she wants to do it.

I am kind of torn on it because I feel like I am not independent if I accept that.

Out of curiosity does anyone feel or would feel differently about accepting money from their spouse’s parents as opposed to their own? Maybe I’m just overly insecure but I wouldn’t want even the slightest hint that I couldn’t afford to take care of my family myself.

overall on this topic there are a million variations. In my family, it’s some adult children dependent on their fixed income mom hanging out a $1000 each month that the mom can’t afford. And if mom had a financial crisis there would be $0 going the other direction.

I love my father in law but I could never take his money. We had a hard time getting someone come out to fix our dryer a few weeks ago and the sonofabitch just bought one for us and had it delivered and didn’t tell us until the movers were an hour away. I was kind of pissed about it because I didn’t ask or need his help. I felt like a child.

We have neighbors across the street that we absolutely love, but we've noticed an alarming trend of late.

A little backstory:  Our neighbor's dad is a defense attorney who obviously makes a fuckton.  They have a huge house in Hedwig Village, according to social media posts, as well as several club memberships, his and hers Mercedes and all the other trappings of an extremely successful life and career.  Their daughter is 35 years old and lives with her husband and three kids (Ages 2, 4 and 10) across the street from us.  Neighbor husband is higher-up in a home healthcare company, while neighbor wife works from home with her Rodan and Fields business and camps out on Instagram all day, so there is income coming in to that house, but obviously not enough to suit her lifestyle.

Recently, she revealed to my wife and I that both she and her husband are on her parents' cell phone plan and they don't pay a dime for phones.  Even the 10 year old has the latest IPhone, because why not?  The invited us over a couple weeks back and she let it slip that her parents pay for all of the streaming services that they have, and with kids, they have several.  Her mom and dad also pay for their membership to the local country club, where they frequently go for lunch and to swim during the summer so they don't have to fraternize with the hoi polloi at the public pools.  As we speak, they are currently in New York celebrating the 10 year old's birthday, while the younger two stayed home with the other grandparents.  Our neighbors are staying at the Hilton in Times Square, went to the Statue of Liberty, skating at Rockefeller Plaza and have seen both 'Wicked' and 'Aladdin' on Broadway.  Her mom and dad are on the trip, and obviously paying for everything.  How do I know this?  Because she mentioned it on her fucking IG story. Honestly, I don't really know if the neighbors are making a house payment, or if mom and dad are paying for that too.

The day I walked across the stage to graduate college was the day my parents told me that they were done paying for my ass.  There have been times when I've needed a loan, but it was just that...a loan that I paid back in full.  I find that I have this growing resentment toward my neighbors because of the handouts they're getting from her folks.  My wife and I both bust our asses to have what we have, but I think what makes me the maddest is that our neighbors couldn't believe that we pay for all our shit ourselves.  They literally sat across from us at their dinner table slackjawed when I told them what we were paying in cell phone expenses each month.  She said "You're not on your parents' plan?" No, goddammit.  I'm a grown up.

Anyone else experiencing this phenomenon?  We really enjoy having them as neighbors, and I know that a lot of this is jealousy, but the shine has kind of rubbed off of our relationship.

Just ask them for the money Eddie. They sure as hell can’t take a hint.

I finished with 3:54 so met my sub-4:00 goal. Overall happy with that result but a tiny bit frustrated that I was on pace for a better finish and I struggled heavily in the last 5-6 miles. Here is my pace breakdown:

There was a big elevation gain mile 20-22 so that took its toll on me and then I was just gassed afterward. In my previous marathon in February, I had a knee problem around mile 20 and similarly struggled down the home stretch, but I guess because my knee was bothering me, that pain superseded any feeling of hitting the wall from a physical exhaustion standpoint.

I felt like my training was reasonably good. Long runs were 13, 15, 17, 19, 11, 20, 13, and 11 miles in the 2 months leading up to the race. I wonder if I should work towards a 22-23 mile run at the peak of training? Most training plans seem to stop at about 20 miles.

I wonder a little bit about my nutrition and hydration. I eat whole grain pasta the night before, then a banana and a bagel with peanut butter the morning of, then I eat GU gels and drink Propel/Gatorade during the race. I think I had 5 gels yesterday, about mile 5, 10, 14, 20, 23. The 2nd/3rd ones didn’t go down super smooth so I got nervous about having more, but perhaps I should’ve forced them anyways. Normally I tolerate them just fine.

Open to any suggestions. I’ll probably give it another shot sometime next year and try to get 3:45.

In my opinion you have to run a full 26 before a race to get your body read. There is a reason a lot of people struggle at mile 22 and that’s because that’s as far as they go during training. Run slower but longer. Good job and I bet you shave 5 minutes off next time.

The question to ask is "which core group of users is most likely to treat Musk like a God and praise him relentlessly if he ingratiates himself with them?"  Everyone knows the answer.  And that answer is determinative, as the primary driver of this entire endeavor is EM's narcissism.  And we have all learned how narcissists work -- it's not so much how many people like you or admire you, it's how intense their worship and devotion is.

A million people thinking well of you?  Cool.

100,000 people worshipping you as a god and praising every move you make, even the ones that directly contradict each other?  THAT'S what I'm talkin' bout.

The people that used to make fun of his “ tree hugging cars” now slurp him. What a world.
