99 times out of a hundred the book is better.  Exceptions:

    Deliverance.

The old man and the sea

Horseshit. Deliverance is quite possibly THE Great American Novel. The Old Man and the Sea won both the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Nobel Prize for Literature. Read ‘em again, man!

  2. So far in the ToC (Time of Covid), I have pickled:

Onions-excellent! A revelation in usefulness, and I already drink Gibsons.  I never thought of this........

Okra-fine, but better ways to enjoy okra

Green beans-best way on earth to eat those dirt-tasting bastards And you can still fry ‘em after pickling.

Turnips-OK, but may as well be tofu; do turnips even have a flavor?

Eggs-didn’t really like my attempt.  Maybe the only way I actually like pickled eggs is 2.5 beers deep in some cinderblock roadhouse with neon beer signs for lighting.

Cauliflower-great crunch, a zingy little surprise package.

Slices. Anyone that prefers spears is a commie neer do well. Probably Irish.

But I’m Irish all the way back to County Clare and I prefer chips!  Also, jalapeño chips are better—but easy to overdo.

Don't know. That's why I'm asking. But it seems perfectly reasonable to me. When something goes wrong, "Well, aggy" has about the same connotation (sp?) as "Well, fuck."

Fantastic!  I’ll stop saying “fuck” in public and just use “aggy” instead.  My wife and kids will be so pleased.  I’ll report back on how this goes............

I don’t think they can fill it up this year to capacity if there was free admission.  Just saying.

I live in a small Central Texas town infested with aggie.    I think that statement is wrong.  Hell, they’re looking for great deals on apartment rentals in Collie Station, cause, you know-fake virus and 2 night hotel minimums for games.................

12 games? But against who? Even Lake Travis High School might not be available.

Odd that the school presidents have to decide this.

Really?  Doesn’t the buck pretty much stop on the university president’s desk?  Whom would you suggests gets to decide?  AD?  Head coach?  Legal affairs staff?  Get your popcorn futures now guys, this season could turn into a truly epic shitshow. I just hope it’s all televised.

Rural Alaska. Am a teacher traveling back to the bush.    The flight left DFW at 5:45 p.m. Had an overnight layover in Anchorage, can blame Alaska Airlines for that.  The layover was from about 10 p.m. to 1:25 p.m. next day.  The 2nd whopper lasted until I arrived in Anchorage late that night, and the apple pie lasted all of the way until about 9:00 a.m. the next morning.  Only had to eat out one meal on the trip, the last meal in modern civilization for maybe a whole year, depending upon the COVID.  That meal was an overpriced but delicious cheeseburger in the Anchorage Airport at about 11:30 a.m.  Took my own plastic fork for the pie.  Next time am thinking more along the lines of more protein.   I like Kroger's and Anchorage has their own version of Kroger's, FredMeyer.  I am thinking Rotisserie chicken, maybe two.  I am cheap, no doubt.  The pie and two whoppers combined to cost about $10 plus tax for the whoppers in Euless, TX.  The cheeseburger, fries, and coke in Anchorage airport cost about $20.

Thanks for the info, and thanks for your dedication to helping educate a way underserved population. OTOH, I’m a little taken aback by the thought of someone tearing into a rotisserie chicken in the window seat!  Flights are approaching Guatemalan bus rides in demeanor and behavior anyway, so I’m gonna remember your approach...........every time I’m in the Miami airport, I kinda expect people to come on board with crates of live chickens.  Nobody on board knows me, anyway.

  8. That’s outstanding!  Were you flying to Paris?  Amsterdam?  Frankfurt?  That much food would hold me to Moscow, at least.  Did you bring your own spoon for the pie or will airlines still loan/give you one?  Did you get booze on the plane?  Have they changed the rules to let you bring your own onboard (liquor, that is-).  I’m thinking of vacation. Plans...............

Has our ability to treat the virus improved over the past four months? Is it therefore reasonable to assume, vaccine or not, that our ability to treat it will improve again within the next 6 months?

Our ability to treat symptoms has vastly improved in a few months, i doubt that trend will continue—not really how treatment of viral infections works.  So, no, probably not reasonable.  Wishing it were so-   Also, don’t get your hopes all up for “herd immunity,” either, nothing much indicates that will ever be a real thing.  I’d love to see some football this fall, but I’m planning solo fishing trips instead.....

  10. Have done New Year’s Eve in both Paris and London in the last 15 years.  I thought the fireworks were better in Paris.  Our kids were 12 and 19, and I almost had an anxiety attack trying to keep track of them—the crush of the crowds is mind-bottling, but I’m now a small town guy.............

I agree, and I'm disappointed that more folks don't understand that this is a moving target. I have to be very flexible with my decisions at work or a lot of people could get hurt or die. I really don't have time to sulk over "that's not what I was told before" when the situation is changing, sometimes by the second. But it's easy for me to forget most people don't do things like that at all, much less on a daily basis.

927 is quite right; the majority have no idea of the fluidity of good/bad knowledge advance and treatment/mitigation decisions in a situation such as this; I wish it were magic: it’s not.  Incidentally, the people determining open/not open don’t give a shit about people dying, it’s all about their cronies and supporters and re-election.  Don’t kid yourselves.

  12. 29 pages, and maybe I’m woke!  Dump “Eyes” and just send Johnny Bush a check—“Whiskey River” is doubtlessly perfect for our last 10 years with only few little tweaks.  Or will we have to send him/his publishing company a check after every game?  Rename the buildings, remove the statues—it’s a university striving to be of the first class, not a minor league football team.............maybe we should focus on the real mission............

Not sarcastic at all. How many people already have a bottle of rubbing alcohol at home? All you're doing is repacking it to be ready to use, instead of having to manually dip a cotton ball each time you cook. If you drop and break the jar, it evaporates in minutes. If you somehow light it, it flashes off quickly and is unlikely to ignite a household surface. Walgreens carries 91% isopropyl alcohol, it works great for this, for dirt cheap.

Where do I keep my tightly closed, breakable bottle of everclear,  then?

Rubbing alcohol ain’t 100%. Evaporation is great, unless it’s ignited.  47 years in a pharmacy lab, and it’s a damned hot flame that takes a while to go away.  Walgreen’s has 91%?  We sure can’t get it-Covid and all that.  Where to keep the Everclear?  I assume a shelf or cabinet where it is unlikely to get dropped.  I”ll continue to use the newspaper lighting method, works OK for me.  No skin off my neck...............

Just make a mason jar of the cotton ball firestarters, then you always have them available. Cram a mason jar full of cotton balls, then pour alcohol (100%) in to soak, and put the lid on. Open and take out a ready-to-use fire starter any time you cook.

Not sure if this is sarcastic-I wouldn’t keep a tightly closed breakable jar of cotton balls soaked in alcohol in my house or lab, but then, i don’t keep any gasoline in the garage, either.  Also, the highest concentration of alcohol is our old friend Everclear at 95%. Absolute (100%, anhydrous alcohol) is available only to labs and pharmacies.

Why couldn't fans that think they have had COVID already get two antibody tests and if both turn out positive be allowed to purchase and attend games? I mean, you are immune, and will not infect anyone, what is the point of keeping them away? Make them wear special "I survived the Coronavirus" Burnt Orange t-shirts so no one gets wigged out if they sit within 6 feet of them. Might add another 3-4000 fans to the stadium. I would pay to get tested, then cough up $100 a ticket to sit anywhere I want.

    CHIEF

Uh, popping positive-even twice-on a 50% reliable antibody test still doesn’t reliably mean you have antibodies; and if you do, that doesn’t mean you’re immune to another infection.  Personally, I’d love to be immune via (probably only partially reliable) vaccine or a mild case and antibodies, but until i know a whole lot more, I’m not headed into the stadium with 100,000 of my closest friends.......

  16. I haven’t done this, but I’ve sure looked at such a journey for just the wife and I (no pics).  First of all, RPM is exactly right-you’re gonna need a bigger truck.  Substantially bigger-those places aren’t all in the flatlands.   Second, Grasshopper, if you think trailer hookups equate to cell service and/or WiFi, you need to get out and explore some-I can show you several nice “campgrounds” with all hookups within 150 miles of Austin with zilch cell service. Nada.  Just wait until New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, etc.  I like your philosophy and your list, but plan this very carefully.
