  1. Anyone on Verizon, having data/ speed connection issues since they started turning on 5G?

Have a Galaxy S21, and 5G sim card.  Don't pay for the super duper 5G service, cheap plan, but, 5G Nationwide is included. And, am centrally located in the 5G area.  Seems like the old days on the voice side- when you'd be outside of tower range, and the service would keep trying to connect, with bad connectivity, and would never switch over to roam.  Or, in this case, data/ voice back to 4G LTE.

Not sure if the Galaxies have weak modems/ antennas.  But, am going to swap out to a 4G sim and see if that helps at all.

  2. My ATT giga internet hits 900+ Mbps via speedtest.net over cat5/ ethernet, using an Asus router.  Newest laptop gets ~500Mbps or so over wifi (5Ghz band) in the same room, and about half that speed on the opposite side of the house.  Old 2012-era macbook is 150 or so in the same room.

My experience is that wifi usb-dongles are slower than dedicated wireless cards w/ antennas, so depending upon how you're set up on your pc, your speeds may be impacted.  Same, if your wireless router is blocked, in an enclosure, etc.

How large of files are you downloading?  What kind of speeds do you get if you try your iphone/ ipad right next to the router?

  3. I have some cheap ones, and some more expensive ones for my Galaxy-- current favorites are the Jabra Elite Active 75ts.  Think I bought renewed on Amazon (Jabra sells directly through Amazon) for $100 or so.  Been using Jabra products since the early 00's- good company.

  4. Had deals expiring, and was going to pay out the ass for Directv and ATT fiber.  Called in, and got some relief on Dtv.  Still not sure what I'm going to do--- sports channel coverage is just too good, but, pricey overall.  Sounds like a mix and match of providers to get everything streaming.

What was really surprising was that they were able to drop 1GB internet to $65/ month for a year.  Guess there's enough competition in Dallas, that they are trying to be more competitive.  (1GB is probably overkill, but, house is hardwired, and do a lot of streaming/ moving data, working from home, and it just works).

Just renewed this week. 2 cars with platinum for about 225 for both for one year

That's in the ballpark of what I just paid for one vehicle--- ~$125 with taxes/ royalties/ etc.  So, there's probably some wiggle room to negotiate.  They said going forward that I would be auto-renewed at this price, and not have to do the annual price savings dance.  I set a calendar reminder to make sure.

And what does a pool cost to heat/maintain a month?  I'm seeing about $100 or so, is that realistic

I think Heat and Maintain are two different things.  Don't have a heater, so, can't comment on that.  But, my maintenance service here in Big D went up from ~$125 (which was above my threshold for pain, but, convenient) or so a year or two ago to $200 now (per company- chemical costs are killing them, and therefore, passed on and killing me).  Weekly cleaning, and this is a smallco/ family business.

...Probably need to figure out how to do this myself.

  7. Poolish works- you'll get some preferment aroma/ flavor with regular/ storebought yeast.

Or, you can really go down a rabbit hole w/ all kinds of yeast/ sourdough cultures.  I've had good luck w/  basic poolish from SAF, Italian yeast, homebrew beer yeast, and sourdough starters.  Yeast is amazing.

Bunch of dry yeast on Ebay for sale- from San Francisco sourdoughs to Italian pizza yeast.  Just gotta feed/ water them, and, they'll stay dormant in your fridge for a long time when you're not baking.  Really adds flavor to your dough.

I usually use corn meal but have had bad luck the last few times. Considering just using a screen in the future.

Have you tried using parchment paper?  I use it w/ a peel and pizza stone.  Pull the paper after a couple of minutes.  Does a real good job.

  9. Pretty good for store bought--- Dallas area Costcos have these.  Made in Irving.

(though they're not as fun as rolling the dice w/ the folks selling out of an Igloo cooler at the 276 crossroads between Lake Tawokoni and Lake Fork.)

  10. Clicked on the Win 11 magnifying glass, and searched for 'sound settings', and that panel pulled up.

I remember that Win 10 had something that looked different, but, did the same thing (allowed you to direct audio).  Another thing I remember, is that I had a video/ sound card in one of my old machines that would sometimes conflict, that I had to reset/ override.

  11. Sounds like you probably have a pc audio out problem- either have wrong digital out set in the control panel selected, or, drivers need updated.  Did you check the Windows System => Sound, panel?

I know that when I've updated drivers in 10 and 11, my audio sometimes switches to my monitor, or speaker, and I don't get sound through my Klipsch Promedias, until I mess with the panel.  (in this case, I run sound through the 3.5mm jack on the soundcards, not through HDMI).

Also, if you do get the audio going through HDMI, make sure the receiver is matched up on the correct  video and sound inputs.  Some receivers allow mixing/ matching video/ audio inputs (depending upon mfg, and if you are using HDMI and non-HDMI sources).

  12. Worked with a bunch of old NASA engineers in Clear Lake right out of school.

Their weekly routine would be Ryan's, Mr. Gatti's, CiCi's, Pancho's (they'd occasionally skip this for Grandy's or double up on Mr. Gatti's, or Ryan's every other week), Oasis (for the all you can eat shrimp), and Genghis Grill.  Ryan's was always the safe goto.  Rinse and Repeat.

  13. Used to travel for work quite a bit- good times.  Worked on an automotive project in Koln in the early 2000s, right before Christmas.  They had a Great Christmas Market, right by the Cathedral.

Perfect City/ Weather/ Atmosphere--- remember having dinner at a restaurant-  eating roasted pork, and drinking a bunch of Kolsch (worth the trip by itself).  And, seems like they also had a special dark Christmas beer as well.  Then, more grilled brats/ sausage beer, and gluhwein at the Cathedral.  Fun trip.

I'm sure you can't go wrong in any German City around Christmas, but, in the footsteps of the Dom, Koln's Market seemed really special.

Really hope your trip works out, and you don't have any issues.  Enjoy!

  14. Not a lot of traffic in this thread these days.  Thought I'd check back in, and see if anyone was brewing?

Sounds like Homebrew Headquarters in Dallas closed last month, which is unfortunate.  Loved that store.

Guess Haltom City/ Ft. Worth for brew supplies are the last brick and mortars in DFW.

I've got about 140,000 miles on my 2009 Tahoe. I love that truck. But I know it'll be time to get a new ride at some point in the near future. I'd kind of like to wait to actually test-drive the new (big) Bronco. In the meantime, I've got the typical minimal dash cracks on the Tahoe and might just shell out the cash to replace that when I get my recalled passenger air bags changed out since I'm resigning myself to not getting a good deal on a new or gently-used vehicle any time soon.

Same here- 2010 Tahoe Z71--- 125k miles--- bigass horizontal and vertical cracks on the dash in front of the steering wheel.  Silverados have the same problem--- all manufacturer defects- poor platicizers.

I read that Chevy doesn't guarantee a clean dash if they do a dealer airbag replacement.  So, if they tear it up- you have to live with it.

Couple of companies make plastic dash covers that fit on top of the existing dash for ~$200 or so. Haven't seen one in person, so, not sure how they look.

  16. Been using Backblaze to backup files for a couple of years--- works well in the background, and doesn't seem to be a resource hog.

I also use Macrium Reflect to do daily system images to an external server.  Had to reinstall my whole system one time, when windows 10 update decided to corrupt my machine.  Worked perfectly.
