I read elsewhere that Botswana's ecology only has the carrying capacity to accommodate 60,000 elephants.

Botswana threatens to deport 20,000 elephants to Germany
    “No joke.”

Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi has threatened to send 20,000 elephants to Germany as the countries argue over the import of hunting trophies.

“No joke,” he told the German tabloid BILD on Tuesday.

Masisi attacked the German federal government, and the environment ministry in particular, led by Green minister Steffi Lemke, for seeking to ban the import of trophies despite Botswana’s overpopulation of elephants.

“It is very easy to sit in Berlin and have an opinion about our affairs in Botswana. We are paying the price for preserving these animals for the world,” he said.

Botswana, home to about 130,000 elephants according to the president, has sent 8,000 to Angola already. “We would also like to make such an offer to the Federal Republic of Germany,” announced Masisi. “We won’t take no for an answer.”

“We want our elephants to roam freely. The German weather is bad enough for them,” he added. “If you like them so much, then please accept this gift from us.”

Officials from the southern African country already protested a potential U.K. ban on safari hunters importing trophies, warning in March they would send 10,000 elephants to Hyde Park in London.

The animal rights organization PETA supports Lemke’s plans to restrict and possibly ban the import, calling trophy hunting “a hobby of rich, jaded people who have more money than morals.”

“The horrendous sums that amateur hunters spend on a hunting trip do not end up with the poor population or with a national park administration, but almost exclusively in the pockets of tour operators and hunting farm owners,” a PETA spokesperson told POLITICO.

Botswana should ban trophy hunting entirely and instead rely on photo tourism to generate revenue, the spokesperson added, pointing out that living animals would do more for the country’s image.

Botswana’s president described his country’s elephant situation as serious. Elephants were trampling people to death, crops were destroyed and villages devastated.

He also invited the minister to inspect wildlife protection in Botswana. His country does more “than any other country in the world,” he stressed, adding that a move to ban importing trophies would worsen poverty.

Germany’s Federal Ministry for the Environment said that Botswana has “not yet contacted them on this matter”, but that Lemke has “signaled that she will accept Botswana’s invitation if an opportunity arises” to inspect wildlife protection in the southern African country.

The German Association for Animal Welfare called the government’s plans “long overdue” and shared a 2022 report with POLITICO, which argues that such hunts, in fact, exacerbate existing inequalities within society instead of diminishing them.

Germany is one of the largest importers of hunting trophies in the EU.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk was unavailable for comment. Cough.

I would've state it as "Population Pressures Produce...." rather than Overpopulation, but solid effort nonetheless.

Yeah, I guess it was in the inflation thread, but I talked about not understanding that the consensus was there were going to be cuts.

Low unemployment, solid GDP, inflation still higher than 2%. What's the need to cut?

The FED is going to get itself into a second, more disturbing pickle here really soon.

One thing I've noticed lately, is there is a ton of heavy equipment/vehicle inventory in the market right now (both new and used) and I have a feeling we're going to start to see that creep down further into other consumer durables.  That's going to seriously way on economic activity, leading to a healthy pullback.

Secondly, if the FED stays off the cut train too long, they're going to get to a situation where a cut is going to look bad rather than inspire stimulus...i.e. they'll have to make too big a cut and that will spook the markets and business owners in a major way.   That will make the market have a wipeout pullback.

Lot of anxiety in this thread right now. The world champions are undefeated and enjoying a day off to ponder if Jesus Christ could actually hit the curve. Tranquilo.

Takin’ care a bidness is His name.

JC could hit the curveball with a 10 inch bat while saddled on a T-Rex.   Right down the first base line because we all know JC hit RH.

I don't get the disaster declarations either.  Is it just a way to give government workers a holiday to enjoy the event?

No, it's a way to have add'l gov resources on call in the event of some sort of disaster type scenario where it would be difficult for local municipalities to carry out their daily duties due to massively increased volumes of people and traffic.

Think about a horrific wreck or something where the police/fire couldn't get to the scene for over an hour because there is wall to wall traffic for miles upon miles in every direction.

  8. Figured out my plans.

    In Waco...

We have 4:12 of totality. Starting at 13:38:02 and ending at 13:42:14.

    At approximately, 11:30, I'm gonna pop 1/2 a gummy.

At exactly 12:59:24, I'm firing up "Dark Side of the Moon"

Eclipse will start in the middle of totality, and finish precisely at the last second of totality.

I will probably add the other half gummy somewhere around 1:15, along with a cocktail or two.

I will be like Bingo (Bluey) staring at the sun in an out of body experience by the time Brain Damage and Eclipse hit, and I'll enjoy every second of it.

A tunnel would take years. They’ll have the bridge rebuilt and open in a year tops. Governments have emergency contracts in place for when stuff like this happens, with massive financial incentives for companies to finish ahead of schedule. And with no traffic to worry about they can work almost unimpeded. They had that bridge in Minneapolis open like 10 months after it fell in the river. That Philly bridge that collapsed recently was reopened weeks later, although it was over land.

"You want a bridge?  I can get you a bridge.  I can get you a bridge by 3:00 this afternoon, with fucking pylon guards"

Good to know you're always on the case Hloby.

There’s speculation that he lost his dad or is about to.  Bluey mega fans are nuts and tracked stuff about all of the relatives and the grandpa had stopped making appearances and there were comments about him having health issues.  Also, Bandit and the kids ended up at the cemetery in one of the new episodes when he ignored the GPS directions and he had an odd look on his face.  Plus he’s clearly feeing middle-aged.

There’s some massive 28-minute episode that hasn’t dropped anywhere  yet and the speculation is that it’s about his dad’s death.

I loved that the dads respected Rusty for his skills and they all respected him as a kid/person for hitting it up for his sister

Not gonna lie, it was amazing at the end when Rusty met his future self.  I don’t think my kid understood the significance of him meeting his future self and also that his future self would be the equivalent of Michael Jordan or Tom Brady.

The episode of McKenzie going into the black hole damn near made me cry.  He gets to the other side as a young McKenzie and is crying for his mom.  Calypso tells him she's "right over there, don't be afraid.  Now you don't have to keep coming back to this place because you know she's there"

-like a sledge hammer....Had to explain to the wife that McKenzie's mom had passed away when he was young, and he's going back to that place to find her.  Got Damn

Get a tool to break your glass windows. Besides impact the next risk issue is electrical malfunction when trying to escape. You have almost no time to get your windows rolled down. It’s almost impossible to break glass manually and it is impossible to open the doors when submerged.

Yep.  I have a glass break tool in both mine and my wife's vehicles.  Sounds silly, but especially after having kids, this is pure nightmare fuel that I think of everytime I cross a bridge with more than decent span.

    No bullshit here.

I've been closely monitoring the Wyatt Langford card market.  Even 2 weeks ago, there was some solid stuff out there at gettable prices.  Right now, it's slim pickens and the prices have shot through the roof.  Kid is going to be special.
