I've decided "[xxx], Ph.D." is the equivalent of telling people you are in Mensa. Sort of a sad "I am a somebody!" plea. No offense to phdhorn.
A guy in a cubical next to mine is a PhD and retired army colonel...nice enough guy but just wants to lecture/teach others as opposed to actually producing within the role he was hired for.
But what irks me is he always introduces himself as colonelon the phone. I fully comprehend the career excellence, dedication and devotion to your country to achieve that rank in our military. I guess it bothers me as my father retired full bird as well...I was literally running circles in my yard when he told me he passed the board for colonel-select...but you’d never know unless you explicitly asked him and even then I don’t know if he’d tell you his rank. That’s the kind of humility I greatly respect. -
That subtle stuff is what makes BoB so awesome. It captures so many nuances about life in the military that isn’t in the typical war movie.
The part when Winters tells them he’s not a Quaker might be my favorite scene in the whole series. It is an incredible depiction of how geat leaders influence their teams without being demeaning or a dick...or the anti-Sobel. The surprise to hhis men wasn’t Winters’ faith, but rather, how the hell did he even know they were questioning its persuasion. He blew their minds, motivated them, and provided needed humor in one fell swoop.
“It’s certainly been a day of firsts. Don’t you agree, sergeant?”
I think him taking a drink with Guarnere is just as meaningful.
Overall I don’t remember that, or some other character building interactions like that in the book...just goes to show how difficult it is and how effectively the job was done by the screenwriters. Buck is definitely called out in the book as being a little too friendly with the enlisted men. -
Yeah when I win the lottery I don’t play I’m buying a fleet of like 1976 Ford LTDs to drive around in my free time and simply ram people like this.
Also what kind of road has such free access with a 75mph limit?

Another casualty:
Bon-Ton Stores Inc., owner of Herberger’s, Younkers and 200 other regional department stores
Maybe because their names are ludicrously fucking stupid?

Scariest thing I ever read was my first run through of IT. That whistling bullshit pales

Good. Women will bring his fat disgusting Mafia ass down.
Shut up
Tapes are leaking out where Cohen threatens reporters running a story which intimates Trump is a rapist. Yeah -- women in charge of Trump's future is bad for Trump No wonder "Melanie" has vanished.Shut up
I wonder how these female Trump voters will defend the onslaught of salacious sex stories about to hit. The piss tape is probably real, I bet the rape allegations are too, as is the abortion. Maybe they don't fucking need Cohen (or anybody) to flip, given all the evidence they have.Seriously either make one post with your verbal diarrhea or trim it down to a cohesive thought. I hate this administration too but your sugar-ness is old

Man what a rush that was. We jumped out early and absolutely dominated. I yelled like a little kid when Wolff sank that putt to win it all. Course looked amazing, the players were all class, and the crowds were great. Hats off to the few Bama fans there, they were loud as hell.
Gotta watch Driven now, didn’t want to jinx it by seeing it before knowing how the season would play out. -
I don’t live in Houston and I don’t live near a creek...so take it how you will: I bought a gallon of Bifen IT and a hose-end sprayer off amazon, nuke the yard/trees/foundation/fence/etc every 45 days or so. I hardly get any bugs at all and zero mosquitos.

I will fist fight any of you that doesn’t tear up when Lip gets his battlefield commission. Mustangs are pretty much at the top of my ‘respect-o-meter’.

Was that the bastard who we was chucking rocks around in the rough to get his shot?

Damn, can't imagine why....
Certainly no judgement here -
I need to read the book. I don't get that feeling from what is on-screen. Dude just seemed like a functioning alcoholic who stayed out of the way.
His daily routine isn’t covered in much detail there either, but there’s a reason he quickly rose to working at the regimental level due to his sharpness with intelligence. Winters had an innate ability to work with him, which is probably why being busted back to battalion was best for everyone.
Hell Colonel Sink’s nickname was ‘bourbon bob’. Lotta guys had a drinking problem when it became more available in places like Germany. -
In the book Ambrose states the men felt Winters was the best field officer and Nixon the best staff officer they ever saw

Wouldn’t want to take a bolt action rifle into combat against a semi garand, but boy the MG34/42 sure helped make up some of that slack.

The canopy became his shroud he hurdled to the ground, he ain’t gonna jump no more

Was just watching the Ron Livingston Video Diary series on YouTube last night. Having Dale Dye throw them into a mini boot camp shows on screen in their camaraderie during action scenes

2011 was hotter. In DFW, there were at least two more days above 100 in 2011 than in 1980. In other cities, like Wichita Falls, it wasn’t even close: 2011 was hotter.
Too bad Wichita Falls didn’t burn to the ground then -
Uchi will always serve as our standard for ‘best’ but Emmer and Rye has consistently been in the Tier 1A region (along with Barley Swine and a few others)...and pending a few more visits to validate consistency, may add Launderette there soon.
The crudo, Brussels Sprouts, and whole fish was fantastic and the prices were reasonable...$200 all in for a couple, including tip, 2 cocktails, 2 Duets and a bottle of nice white. Honestly enjoyed the change of pace, no pretension there and no constant stream of people refilling water, pouring our wine, etc but whenever we actually needed something from the bar/food, got it quickly.-

I think we learned our lessons about assymetrical warfare from Vietnam and subsequent conflicts better than the Rooskies did from Afghanistan.
Well the battle under discussion here was more full on frontal fighting, it wasn’t urban fighters hiding among civilians or far up some forgotten 10,000’ mountain peak...you come at the king (of air superiority) in wide open spaces, you best not miss. -
You know those USAF CCTs were awfully busy
