DeGabriel Floyd on commitment and recruiting Cali kids to Texas ::

Four-star Westlake (Calif.) outside linebacker De’Gabriel Floyd gave Texas a verbal commitment this offseason and has been a vocal recruiter for the Longhorns.

Floyd sat down with Horns247 to talk about his decision, how he sees himself fitting in at UT and more.

EJ: You made an early commitment to Texas. What was it about UT that really attracted you?

DF: The offer came kind of late. I just thought it was a big name offer. I never took it that seriously until Coach (Todd) Orlando came to my school. There are only a few guys he’s recruiting in California, and he came out here just for me. He told me what he wanted in a player and what he sees from me in the future. That really opened my eyes. He told me that he really wanted me at Texas.

EJ: It seemed like your visit for junior day weekend pushed you over the edge. Is that an accurate take?

DF: Yeah. So I took the trip, and I was with my family, and we loved it. Everything was top tier. The vibe between me and all the coaches was great. I bonded with some of the players like Dele (Ayodele Adeoye), Jamari (Chisholm), BJ (Foster) and a few others, so it just felt like home for me.

EJ: So where does your commitment stand now?

DF: My commitment is 100 percent solid. I’m trying to graduate early and get there in January. I want to learn the playbook, get bigger and just get comfortable with the system.

EJ: How do you see yourself fitting into UT’s defensive scheme?

DF: They want me to come in and play rover. Coach (Todd) Orlando explained to me that the rover is the guy that makes the most plays. I’m excited to play that role. Their rover position needs a lot of speed, instincts and ability. I think I have that. I love going after the ball. They said I have the intangibles to do that, so I’m ready.

EJ: What’s your relationship like with defensive coordinator Todd Orlando?

DF: Man, we have a great relationship. I talk to him all the time. I tell him literally everything that’s going on in my life — wrong, right, good and bad. That’s my guy. He’s a mentor that God has blessed me with.

EJ: What stands out to you about head coach Tom Herman?

DF: Coach Herman is great. He’s a loving father figure to everybody. He’s all for the kids. That’s just the type of person he is. He’s heartwarming. He knows football. He knows what he needs from his players. He doesn’t need to tell them what to do. They know what they need to do to get it done.

EJ: Texas is having some success recruiting the state of California. What is it about UT that’s really attracting kids from the West Coast?

DF: A little bit of it is the saying that everything is bigger in Texas. Football is bigger in Texas. It means something there. I think a lot of guys are really interested in that. And it’s just a great program with a lot of tradition.

EJ: It also seems like Austin is a natural fit for a lot of California prospects. What do you like about the city?

DF: Austin is really similar to Los Angeles. There is a lively atmosphere. There is a lot of stuff to do. People are active and out having fun. It’s just a lively city.

EJ: Which recruits are you working on to join you at Texas?

DF: Bru McCoy is my guy. I try to stay in contact with him as often as possible. I’m not going to name anybody, but I’m in the process of possibly flipping some guys. We’ll see, but I’m the heaviest on Bru. I don’t want to put all his business out there, but Texas is high on his list like he’s said.

EJ: What’s your pitch to Bru McCoy?

DF: Everybody is talking about this Cali to Texas movement. I feel like Texas is trying to recruit the West Coast hard because there is a lot of talent out here. We can make a big name for Texas.

EJ: Last thing, when is the next time you want to make it back to Texas?

DF: I wanted to make it this weekend, but I have some family plans. But I’m going to be back there some time in July. I’ll make my official in the fall.

    Bru McCoy = want

I know the high school kids in the state of Oklahoma (maybe just the Tulsa area), are allowed the in-state rates in Arkansas as freshman...

That's the deal for everyone out-of-state.  Depending upon your grades, you get anywhere from 70% - 100% off out-of-state tuition.  As a result of the good tuition deal and how hard it is to get in UT nowadays, there are tons of good Texas kids at Arkansas (other SEC schools and OU as well, sadly).  Thought I heard Arkansas might soon do away with the non-resident tuition award, because they've had so much growth and it was such a sweetheart deal, economically.

  3. I have to admit, Fayetteville is a really cool town.  It actually has some of the laid-back bohemian feel of Austin, or at least the Austin of years back.  And, if you are into outdoor activities (camping, hiking, fishing, etc.), the surrounding areas are great and very scenic.  Got nothing bad to say about the town itself and actually like it quite a bit.

That said, f Arkansas football (and basketball - despised seeing their drooling hordes at SWC tourney at Reunion aka Barnhill South).  When I was a kid, we hated those bastards almost as much as OU.

I'll never forget  seeing the LGBT float in the round up parade get pelted with beer cans from the Woo in 1987.

Yep, that was also when the aforementioned keg toss incident occurred, but I thought it was 1984/1985.  Regardless, thankfully, the keg didn't make it all the way to the float, but I think it may have hit a car that was parked at a meter in front of the Woo.

  5. 1984. Also Room 610. Lat, was it the second to the last room on the left/drag side (my memory is fading, but I'm pretty sure that was the number)?  If so, I'm sorry about everything that happened in there in '84.

Also, I witnessed the keg launch.  Pretty sure it came off the 3rd floor, but not positive.

    Just filled out the survey.

Lots of 1's and "not interested"

Who would want to watch a football game from field level in the end zone? Those would be the worst seats in the house by far.

Many of my answers were "because I don't want to watch a game from the endzone, I go to the game to watch the game"

Same here on the 1's and end zone options.  I can't fathom why someone would pony up that much for season tix at field level, since those will be atrocious.  That said, some idiots that go to the games to yack, sit on their hands (or in the club A/C) or be seen, will think it's cool.

Also, the "living room" section made me laugh.

I'm all for a south end zone renovation and upgrade of facilities (especially where important for recruiting), but my happy ass ain't moving from Section 6 and I'm worried about a mass influx of non-fan douchebaggery into these new south end areas.

  7. I just spent way too long on that survey as well.  While I'm all for south end zone renovations and other upgrades that we know are necessary for recruiting purposes, I just don't give a damn about club/box seating and I'm worried about adding more seats, when we already have problems filling the stadium as is.  Also, sticking a bunch of people (or corporate douches) in new club/box seats will continue to undermine the stadium atmosphere.  We already have lots of empty seats during games in the east side club seats and north end zone club areas, in part because a lot of those people sit inside in the A/C bullshitting, instead of out in their seats watching the friggin game.  And yes, not playing scorching Sept day games might help.

Since the survey also touches on game day atmosphere, we also need to address the student section/attendance issues.  In part because I sit on the west side, I always enjoy watching a big rowdy student section and the game atmosphere is best when the students are there in force, liquored-up and loud.  However, as many have discussed, our student sections have become less than stellar, but that's a whole different issue.

Clearly we need a south end upgrade, but I have absolutely zero interest in sitting there, regardless of price points.  Hell, you couldn't pay me to sit at field level and not be able to see anything.  I guess some might find that experience cool...once, but no way I'd want crazy-expensive season tix there.  Especially now that we have beer, I'm there to watch the damn game and do everything else (eat, hang out, socialize, etc.) before and after.

Typing this confirmed I am old as shit.

I'm pretty sure Ohio State pulled ahead with his UOV about a month ago, and then Texas didn't pull back ahead with the subsequent UOV, and has been playing from behind ever since

Hate it and have absolutely no real clue, but am concerned this is the case.

I recommend Leon’s Poultry and Oyster a little north of downtown for good beer and fried chicken or oysters.  You are right to not get a car, very walkable city or short uber rides anywhere you want to go.

    This.  Leon's is great.

Also, enjoyed Rodney Scott's and Husk.  Excellent food city.
