  1. Euro 2004 deserves its own thread.  The rosters of France, England, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Italy and Czechia are ridiculous.  And then Greece wins it.

They have never had the comparative talent level that they have now.

  3. Southgate has made it to the QF (loss to France), SF (loss to Croatia AET) and F (loss to Italy on PKs) in his three major tournaments.  In the 25 major tournaments between 1966 and when he took over, they made it to two SFs (1990 WC and 1996 Euros).  0 SFs from the 98 WC through the 2016 Euros is the truly astounding achievement.

You mean all these new fans that have been created by the new ambassador for women’s basketball won’t tune in to watch a team represent their country?

Game times unfortunately conflict with the breakdancing competition

  5. If that is how VAR works in this tournament, there will be far more important goals ruled out because someone's elbow or toe is offsides.

This fucking sucks. Not really because he's leaving TV, but because he'll likely go into politics after this. He was already mulling running for governor of Alabama a few years back. I'm tired of athletes running for office. He's funny and entertaining on TV as a professional clown, but I don't want this dude running a state.

I can't stand watching Cantlay's slow ass. Hope he fucks off soon.

Uh oh.  2 stroke lead and in good position to par his final hole

Cantlay in at -5.  helluva round.  more guys above -1 than I would expect.  no wind is very helpful.

    I guess my stream is behind a bit . . .

  8. That’s what people enjoy watching.  Shooting and passing that resembles the best from the men’s game.  The wnba post game that most of the league’s best players have employed to dominate simply doesn’t engage the casual sports fan that drives ratings.

I actually do agree with you, and what you are insinuating: Caitlin Clark is a huge hit and has driven the eyeballs, ratings, media attention and business attention (e.g. sponsorships, charter planes, etc.) because she has captured a mainstream (e.g. white) audience. And those new eyeballs are rooting for her.

It's the exact definition of "representation" in the "representation matters" that BIPOC use, but the inverse: White, hetero, middle-class woman and mainstream America who have NOT been fans of WNBA feel "seen". It's like the Ariel being black thing, but opposite. A white, non-gay, non-european gal who is cooking the traditional WNBA makes for good drama.

There have been plenty of white American stars in the WNBA (including MVPs of the league) and no one gave a shit about any of them.  Caitlin introduced an entirely new style of women's basketball and dominated college basketball in doing so.  That separates her from everyone who came before her.

Okay, one more comment because you appear to be dense.

    REPRESENTATION IS EVERYTHING

The girls are going to gravitate towards sports where they see participants like themselves.

Now, if you can’t grasp that, perhaps there’s no hope for you.

You post one of the most inane takes on the board this year and then have the gall to characterize someone else as dense and hopeless.

Have you been to a youth basketball tournament?  Tons of white people.  You would think they would all be playing lacrosse or water polo given the demographics of the NBA and WNBA.

Have you been to an ECNL event?  Lots of minorities and there have been for years.

That is all that I will add to this subject.

Good.  Suggesting that white parents may shift their daughters to other sports because there is more diversity on the USWNT is insane.  You may also want to consider reviewing the diversity in elite club volleyball and softball.

Last night’s USWNT is looking more and more like the composition of the US Men’s basketball team.

Not sure how pay-to-play families across the USA are going to react to that.

Are you suggesting that because there is some diversity on the the field that the young players weren't raised and developed in the pay-to-play system?  All of the players on the USWNT roster under the age of 27 other than Lily Yohannes (raised in the Netherlands) were developed by ECNL clubs (the most expensive club league in the country).  You might also want to look at the rosters of the US youth national girls teams where every player is from an ECNL or GA club (the two most expensive club leagues in the country).

    Jaedyn Shaw (Solar - ECNL)

    Korbin Albert (Eclipse - ECNL)

Hal Hershfelt (Corcorde Fire - ECNL)

Trinity Rodman (So Cal Blues - ECNL)

    Jenna Nighswonger (Slammers - ECNL)

Sophia Smith (Real Colorado - ECNL)

Naomi Girma (De Anza Force - ECNL)

Catarina Macario (San Diego Surf - ECNL)

Sam Coffey (Match Fit Academy - ECNL)

Tierna Davidson (De Anza Force - ECNL) - Yes, our starting CBs both played for the same ECNL club

Mal Swanson (Real Colorado - ECNL)
