  1. Toppin and the Utah big would be a good big man haul. Toppin and the Turkish guy from UCLA (who didn't exactly have an impressive year) would fine as long as the later doesn't shy away from crashing the boards and can provide a little interior defense.

I read that we might also be kicking the tires on Trevon Brazile.   If that's true, he could provide some instant familiarity/chemistry with Mark and great PF/C flexibility.

I admittedly have no idea if any of these guys have character red flags.

  2. Portal Kombat: Two hoops transfers to know
New Mexico freshman 6-9 forward JT Toppin is a name to know for Texas fans. Toppin had a tremendous freshman campaign averaging 12.4 points and 9.1 rebounds in 36 games, including 35 starts. He's the younger brother of Obi Toppin. This should be considered a very tough recruitment.

UCLA freshman big man Berke Buyuktuncel hit the portal today, and he's a name to know for Texas fans. The 6-9, 240 pound power forward is from Turkey, and the Horns have someone on staff (yep, that high flyer) that has connections to players in Turkey.

Both those guys would add some good depth and competition … but if it’s just one I’ll take the NM guy
  3. Owens and Arch look a lot more serious and tuned in than Ewers did … Ewers is a quiet guy who can be mistaken as nonchalant at times but today he didn’t look like the clear starter at QB

  4. Very concerned, either Scott was misled on what his role would be in which case RT is a bad recruiter/communicator or RT decided recently that Scott wasn't good enough to be on the court his freshman year in which case RT made a bad talent evaluation and wasted resources recruiting him at all and taking his commitment. Either way some of us are pointing out that we're clearly mistreating these top 30-75 ranked recruits in some way and should not be recruiting them going forward since they'll expect playing time which we apparently refuse to give them so we should only be recruiting 1 and done types and projects actually willing to ride the pine going forward.

What about the possibility the kid got cold feet, flaked or demanded some crazy NIL?

Kids change their mind… especially with money in the equation and people in their ears
  5. Jaylon Tyson was literally a clone of Scott's circumstances, high 4* who got next to no minutes with us, leaves and immediately blossoms into a guy who's a likely 1st round pick this year. Was he as good as he is now as a freshman? No. Was he worth getting minutes as a freshman and playing a role and being able to contribute to winning basketball. Probably.

Scott never stepped on campus, unlike Tyson

Chris Johnson may be a better comparison

This Kent guy for Indiana State had pretty good numbers again the best competition they played:

-14 points, 4 rebounds against Bama

-12 points, 3 rebounds against Michigan State

-7 points, 10 rebounds again Drake

-6 points, 20 rebounds in the second matchup against Drake

-22 points, 9 rebounds in the MVC final against Drake

-35 points, 9 rebounds against SMU in the NIT

-16 points, 7 rebounds against Cincy in the NIT

-13 points, 7 rebounds in the NIT final against Seton Hall

Saw this guy playing on ESPN+ a few games... He's a fast aggressive rebounder with a great vertical.  I'd take him in a heartbeat, though he's not gonna carry a large load on offense.

I prefer my guards to average more than 0.9 assists per game.

Which of these guards would we rather take (both have been playing in a power conference):

    • Player A:  11.1 PTS, 4.1 AST, 1.3 STL, 53.9 TS%, 51.0 eFG%, 34.3 3P%, 2.7 TO, 20.8 USG%
    • Player B:  16.8 PTS, 0.9 AST, 0.6 STL, 53.0 TS%, 48.2 eFG%, 32.0 3P%, 1.6 TO, 31.9 USG%

I'd take him if he's not playing the point and is a good team chemistry/glue guy.  That said, we still need a solid rim protector (or two) and primary ball handler type (and backup PG if Hunter is gone).  Regardless of who comes in through the portal, I hope we avoid the "you're the man... go make something happen" offense we ran too often with Abmas.

Which guy in this game do you think will have the best NBA career?

Newton, Castle/Samson Johnson, Karaban/Clingan ... It's hard to say from this group.  Each, with good health and adaptation to the NBA game could play roles in the league for several years.  Edey might could be a back-up bench big for several years if he stays in good shape and good health.

Good too see the end of Cunningham’s, Mitchell’s, and Hunter’s time in the program.

    (Praise Jesus! He is Risen!)

Brock provided grit, but he was just slurping up minutes that younger guys could have benefited from.

Put him on the staff as a grad assistant and let him bully players in practice to teach them the finer details of the dark arts, but his time is up.

Dillon Mitchell has not improved, but maybe he isn’t able to.

Don’t know what is wrong with Hunter, but his move to Austin was not good for his basketball. 🏀

I'd be okay with both Mitchell and Hunter on the roster next year if they chose to return.  That said, they are definitely role players who need to be off the court when they are not meeting expectations.  Mitchell is good defender and rebounder, but he simply can't keep a defense honest if he's not under the basket.  Hunter is a short two guard who can  defend and cover the point for short spurts when he's not having one of his WTF nights.  He's kind of what RT wanted Horton to be this year.  When he's asked to be an offensive focal point of primary ball handler he folds more oft than not.  Both would be fine on the team next year with short leashes when they disappear on the court.

but i was told that this wasn’t happening despite us pretending he didn’t exist all season long. i am shocked at this news, shocked i tell you!

I was scratching my head as to why he wasn't getting any minutes to build some experience.  If he was goose-egging on the school attendance part of the job, I guess I understand why now.  It doesn't take much for an athlete to get a passing GPA in "undecided" with all the tutors and hand-holders provided.

Mitchell and Hunter had plenty of opportunities to improve over the last two years. It's not like their minutes were limited and didn'tget enough chances to showcase their talents. They just are not good players, and hoping for them to miraculously improve next year will only set us up for failure. Hopium is not a winning strategy. It may be a good coping mechanism for the fans (works for Aggy), but the coaches are paid millions to know better.

They'd be good depth and can certainly fill a few roles, but agree their roles do not include offensive consistency (nor great ball handling for their respective positions).  Both are plus defenders who can start next year if the roster is rounded out with some shooters/scorers.  Both can have a double digit scoring game a good 30-50 percent of the time.  Both have their holes.  With them on the team next year, we will still need 3-4 more guys who can consistently get a good shot off and have the potential to more often than not get 12-17 points a game.

I'm just a stubborn weirdo. I'd rather keep guys around who have already been here and contributed significant minutes. That includes Hunter and Mitchell. Glad Shedrick has already announced his intent to return.

depth, maturity and experience in the "system" is always a plus.  System refining/upgrading and player growth will be needed for sure.

  13. I get the unpredictability with portal transfers.  The couch can account for everything in that respect.  Seasoned guys having meltdowns (like Hunter with the turnovers against Tennessee, and Max taking bad quick shots when he should know better) might also not be on the coach as much as we think.  However, substitutions patterns and line-ups is ALL on the coach in my opinion and their were times this year when Rodney did not have his best available 5 on the court when he needed them on the court.  Even the coach's favorites need to sit if they are doing crazy stuff, even if it's just long enough to relax and be reeducated on the gameplan.

I haven't watched much until the last couple of weeks -- does Mitchell have any offensive moves?  Have they ever run a play for him that's not a lob?

Nope.  Earlier in the season he tried some post-up spin moves with his back to the basket on the baseline and drives with sort pull-ups, but he often didn't even draw iron.  After that he completely quit shooting anything that wasn't a dunk or put back and teams knew they could loosely cover him with their worst defender.

  15. I’m not a fan of Terry, but dang this roster is terrible. Him keeping them in this game is a miracle.

That abmas off balance three pointer with 20 seconds left rather than a drive and attempt to draw a foul was piss poor play calling or pure shit if the 5th year player decided to ad lib there … either way stupidity

  16. Abmas has been showing all year that there is a huge talent gap between Tulsa and big 12 level talent.

Mitchell on the court on offense allows Tennessee to defend 5 on 4

Hunter and abmas being so sloppy with ball security and decision making is pathetic

Horton getting more than 5-8 minutes a game at this point is criminally negligent

And Brock former energy / effort has devolved to thug shit this year … weaver needs more his and hortons minutes

We were up 2+ possessions the entire 2nd half. CSU never had the ball with the chance to take the lead for the final 30 minutes of game action. We didn't pull the game out.

The point I was trying to make was that we closed the door when CSU was gaining ground and confidence due in large part to Weaver's defense and offense.  With the hot and cold play of this horns this year, I don't think using the phrase "pull the game out" is necessarily non applicable.  All said, I'll take an ugly, 1 point win at the buzzer with guys who have not seen the court all year playing significant minutes if it means we live on to the next game.
