  1. So with the rest of the world hammering the dog shit out of Urb and tOSU  for their debacle, is aggy gonna slither away from the spotlight for their little coaches paying players/ running from scheduling Texas episodes? Caught the KEYE sports last night and Bob Ballou threw a couple of jabs at them. Que the KEYE boycott patrol.

  2. Didn't see Leslie's Chicken Shack mentioned. We would stop there on all trips from Ft. Worth heading to the coast or any where in south Texas. I thought it was great as a kid, hell even until they went of business. I know they had a few other locations but only ate at the one in Waco. How I did the locals not support that place? Oh, and I'm not a fan of gizzards but damn my Mom loved theirs. Insert your mom/gizzard joke here cause I know you want to.

BVB/Mama Tried gets a lot of love here and it seems to always be on sale for about $7-8. Don't let that influence your decision to branch out to other IPAs bc IPAs are pricey to make and are usually priced reasonably to allow some sort of margin for the brewery/retailer. Also, MT isn't a DIPA, its an IPA, although they recently released Double Mama, which isn't a DIPA either, but double dry hopped. Great beer and brewery.

Yeah, it was the Double Mama that I had, went through that pretty quick and have been buying the mix & match sixers for the past couple of weeks. I am not able to  distinguish between a majority of the local IPA's that I tried lately(could be my hop scorched taste buds)but still looking for something that really stands out. A blind tasting might be in order to see which beers I actually prefer. Also,  I get beer envy looking at all the post from the west coast brew pubs. I want a Belching Beaver too dammit!

Whatever happened to pale ales and session IPAs? As someone who drinks at restaurants and bars on a regular basis, it would be nice to enjoy some hoppy beers that aren’t 8% abv. Am I alone in this?

Can't vouch for the quality as it's been a couple of years since I had one, but Full Sail Brewery in Oregon makes a few session beers. Check their website.

  5. My 15 year old and her friends love going to Torchy's, mostly for the fried avocado & totm. I can take or leave it,  but their newer place on Hwy.290 has a bar so I can set there and drink with an order of chips & queso while the girls cackle. Sometimes this place is too damn crowded though, was met outside(line was out the door) by an employee once that told me wait time for your order was 45 minutes. Umm, no thank you.

  6. Went to the new Specs in Belterra Village on Hwy.290 today. Smaller than the 290 & Mopac store so the beer selection was just ok, picked up a few cans of stuff I haven't tried yet. Wasn't looking for liquor but the shelves seemed to be adequately stocked, no sales people dogged me and there were only two other people in the store so I was in and out pretty quick. Prefer Total Wine when I'm near the Brodie store and Twins when they run their sales.

  7. Tried my first beer from Brazos Valley, Momma Tried Double IPA and it was better than I was anticipating. Would buy again. Also picked up some Bear Republic Racer 5 IPA, liked it as well but it was $3.00 or so more per sixer than the Momma Tried DIPA so advantage aggy?

  8. McAdoo Seafood, it's in the old Post Office building a block or so off of the traffic circle. Only have been once for Sunday Brunch, shrimp and grits was damn good. They had a build your own bloody mary bar with a good selection of olives etc. to toss in your drink along with a few types of spicy tomato juices. The building is pretty cool with a nice patio but it will be hot as hell this time of year out there.

Been to the Huisache Grill on San Antonio St. a few times and it has always been consistently good, can get crowded at peak times so may need to make reservations.

Have not been to any of the brew pubs that have opened around the traffic circle and a couple of blocks off the main drag so that will be next for me . Someone with knowledge of those can weigh in on them.

  9. I also like to watch old live concerts by a variety of bands and types of music. I'll watch stuff from the 40's to present, it's damn good entertainment to me. When I don't feel like or can't watch YouTube I'll go to the Internet Archive site and pick out an artist and concert and listen to that. Hell, there is close to 200,000 concerts to choose from so it's a good source for listening to your favorite bands, maybe even at a show you were at.

  10. Got back yesterday from my Maine vacation so  thanks to those for their recs and tips. Other than United Airlines delays, crappy customer service and lost luggage on the flight to Portland it was a great trip. Piss on you United, I'll gladly fly other airlines in the future.

We had a Airbnb rental in Cushing that was remote, right on the water with it's own dock, pretty much your typical Maine cottage. This was our base to go up and down Hwy.1 for day trips. Went sailing on Penobscot Bay out of Camden on the 4th on a classic schooner the Olad. For those who stated their love of old boats this is a perfect way to spend a few hours. Had time to eat/ drinks then catch the fireworks over the Camden Harbor. This would be a good place to spend a couple of days, really cool little town. Also did the hike up to Mt. Battie just outside of town in a state park. The view of the Camden Harbor was excellent. It was much warmer than I anticipated and I sweat out every Maine beer I drank during the hike.

Couldn't convince my daughter to do the nighttime luminating sea water kayak tour out of Castine , so we did the morning tour instead. It was fun, but nothing outstanding. Lunch at the Warf next door afterwards was plenty good though, with more Maine beers . This was a reoccurring theme, go do something outdoors related, then stumble on a great place for seafood and beers, repeat.

Made it to Acadia National Park on a rainy Friday , drove the one way loop around the park with lots of brief scenic overlooks until the rain stopped then hiked around one of the lakes. Drove to the top of the mountain and again, the views were awesome. Beautiful place with crowds that you would expect at a National Park, but nothing that wasn't manageable. Bar Harbor on a Friday was crazy crowded though, and I wasn't anticipating this. I figured it would be busy but it was a snarl of traffic and no where to park. Really wanted to spend some time there but after a half hour of looking for a place to park we gave up and went to a pub in Ellsworth.

Spent the last day of the trip in Portland before flying back to Austin. For the most part we hung out in the Old Port area and had a blast. So many cool places on every street and alley I could have spent a few days there just wandering aimlessly.

Flew back on American with no issues, so once again, screw you United.

  11. Just got back this afternoon from a week on the Maine coast. Went from Portland to Acadia NP/ Bar Harbor. You can't throw a rock without hitting a great seafood place and almost all of them have a few local beers on tap. We rented a house from a guy in the lobster business and he gave us as many as we wanted, so aside from a lobster roll on the first day we went with everything but lobster when eating out up and down Hwy.1. I really liked the whole clam bellies and scallops the best, but that just me. There are so many places we'd just pick one that looked good to us. Had a damn good scallop po boy at Claws in Rockland, a pick and choose seafood platter at the Wharf in Castine that was legit. Bar Harbor after hiking  Acadia on a Friday  was a mistake. Parking didn't exist, got tired of looking so we left. Don't know if it's always like that. Nice bakery in Searsport for breakfast, the Coastal Café was solid. In Portland we headed down to the Old Port District, had pizza at the Flat Bread Co. Cool place and the pizza was good, had a Liquid Riot DIPA that was really good. That area was a blast. Hell, it was my first trip to Maine and it was so easy to find great, cool spots you won't have any problems if my old ass didn't.

  12. Anybody had Yellow Rose now that it's back on the market? I went the build your on six pack route while at HEB, so many other IPA's to choose from I'm not missing it all that much. Hopefully they got the soapy taste problem under control.

Traffic won't be too bad unless it's 4th of July weekend. Just know that the roads to many of the "beach" areas are 2 lane so it might be heavy early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Nothing is ever as bad as going to the Cape.

Have you been to Maine before?

Never been to any part of New England. Have always gone elsewhere. This is my wife and daughter planned trip.

If you have any appreciation for old boats I suggest that you stop in any small town that has a harbor and take a walk around the docks. There are some truly beautiful craft that have been meticulously maintained for many, many years. Runabouts, sailboats, cruisers... just all sorts to drool over and it's free to look!

Yeah, love classic boats and so does Mrs. Hovis. We met while club/fleet sailing on Lake Travis so that part will be easy. Have gone out on a few old schooners on the west coast and will try to do that as well on this trip. Hopefully there won't be a traffic nightmare on the way to Bar Harbor like described in the Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and Cape Cod posts.

  15. Is this the all things New England thread? Didn't see anything for Maine and I'm heading up there for a week starting July 2nd. Never been anywhere near there so need some recs. Fly into Portland, spend a day or two there and then driving up to the Bar Harbor area for few days before returning to Portland for the flight back. Looks like finding beer and good places to eat will be no problem, not sure what to expect on the way up to Bar Harbor. Who's been and whatcha got?

  16. Don't know if it's still there but used to eat at Herrera's, a hole in the wall Mexican place in Dallas across from the jail on Oak Lawn. They did 'Crazy Nachos' which were bean, beef, chicken, cheese, guacamole and japs. They were killer. Didn't serve beer but you could bring your own cooler in, no shit's given. Place got really popular and the line would wrap around the building which sucked but at least you had your on beverage of choice.

  17. Stones and Stevie Wonder . Ft. Worth, whenever Exile on Main Street came out.

Traffic and Little Feat. Also Ft. Worth(two of the most talented rock bands I've seen over the years)mid 70's ?

And because I saw them just before they passed and  are true legends: Chet Atkins(not rock, just greatness, the shows with Mark Knopfler  are timeless)Ray Charles, B.B. King and Roy Orbison.

  18. Had to be in Fredericksburg at 7:30 a.m. today, so it was too early for the bikers when I left Driftwood. On the way back in the afternoon it was a different story. They were all over the place, up and down Hwy.290 and every RR,FM road that intersected it. They got to be a boost for the local economy though, hell there were bikes at every restaurant, winery, and bar I passed.

  19. Picked up some Squatters Double IPA while at HEB today. Don't know anything about their brewery but it is a nice change of pace from all of the citrus IPA's I've had lately.
