One guy ran the 4th fastest 40 time ever at the NFL combine (4.27)

the other guy ran a 4.33

those 40 speeds are in the 99th percentile of football players in the world

Smith's is reported to be a 4.4 40 guy (but who knows, can't find any timed)

next thing we know you are going to complain he isn't as fast as Rondale Moore (4.33 40 @ The Opening)

    come on.

I'm not complaining in the slightest.  The point of the post was about expectations.

As an example I brought up the boards expectations for Jake Smith and specifically a lot of talk about his speed. He's fast, not elite but plenty fast , along with other great attributes. It's not a knock on the kid at all, just the hype certain recruits/incoming freshmen get before they step foot on the field.

It's interesting to me how those expectations play out and how often they end being off base.

Shit, I hope he ends up being an all-American, it wouldn't surprise me.

They’re a zombie, and have been since 2012  I’d argue against them being an innovator. Mitchell was an innovator. Chief followed that. Chesapeake and Devon came in and operated terribly. CHK has been widely known as a terrible operator, and piss off every other operator.  Royalty owners hate them. They made their hay using shady bullshit financial engineering, similar to Enron. They don’t compare in any metric to (ironically, given my example in the preceding sentence) a company like EOG.

Their legacy is two failed companies spawned by their co-founders, Sand Ridge and American Energy Partners, the latter of which culminated in the suicide of their high profile fraud of an owner. AEP’s principals moved on to another soon-to-be failure in White Star.

There’s a lot to talk about. None of the substance is good.

Agree with all of this.  They were the worlds worst at setting lease bonus precedents at 3 to 5 times the going rate, for no apparent reason.  If they showed up in an area we were working, we knew we were fucked.

  3. It's always interesting to see how the incoming freshman "pan out" in comparison to whom this board is really excited about right now.

LJH didn't get much attention, either positive or negative when he came in.  Although some "analysts" thought he was a terrible take...

Jake Smith seems to be the one of the class favorites.  He looks like a damn good football player to me, but I'm not seeing the elite speed I keep reading about (ducks).  He's got good speed and quickness and runs exceptional routes, but he doesn't have Marquise Goodwin or Hollywood Brown speed.  I think he ends being a really good football player, but I'm not sure he makes as an immediate impact or lives up to some of the expectations I read here.  Malik Jefferson rings a bell in this regard. This happens every year, I'm sure with every fan base.

  4. CB is a position where experience really matters.  There is plenty of talent on the roster, but it might be a rough start to the year at that position.  Hopefully they will pick things up quickly.  I think Cook will be ok if he can eliminate some of the bonehead stuff he tends to do, mainly from being overly aggressive.  Not sure what to think about Green. He's got a ton of talent but it might take him a little while to get up to game speed.

Well, to be fair, I don't get continual updates regarding the wells I write Opinions for, so I'm sure there have been others. This was just a case where they informed me that they no longer needed a Division Order Opinion b/c it turned out to be a dry hole and to just bill whatever time I'd spent. Luckily by that point I was like 95% done anyways, so no biggie.

Most of my clients over the years have been mid-majors that are primarily drilling well-known, established fields, so it's not like they're out there wildcatting.

That makes sense.  I wasn't trying to come across as snarky, but I have become a bit jaded by what's happened over the last several years. The business has become mostly manufacturing, run by PE companies with select "management teams", or stock companies.

There is still a niche for companies like ours, but it has become much more difficult and certainly not as much fun.

In other words...get off my lawn!

Yeah, I had a client drill a dry hole recently but that's probably the only one I've heard of in all the years I've been writing title opinions. And that was specifically a case where they went into an area full of dry holes to test a different formation than had previously been drilled.

Wow, that blows my mind, "that's probably the only one I've heard of in all the years I've been writing title opinions".  I've been in the conventional exploration business my entire career (a long time).  We still drill only conventional deals.  I would expect about a 20 to 30% rate of success depending upon the prospect (might be higher). So, there is a very good chance we will drill dry holes. Supposed to drill an exploration deal in the Spring (hopefully not dry).  And we operate in the Permian. I suppose that sounds even more outlandish.  That's been the norm for the majority of my career, it's just relatively recently that dry holes are considered "rare". Lmao...

It's crazy how much the industry had changed in the last 5 to 7 years.

  7. Wow, Illinois really fell apart the last 2 sets. Their passing cratered, and when they were in system they were too predictable. I will say, Nebraska stepped up their defense and were digging everything. Sun also got hot at the right time.

So why is Texas consistently the worst top ten ball control team year in/year out?

Watch every elite 8 match and compare Texas' ball control/back row defense to the other elite teams....the drop-off is significant.

We win most matches because we have a bevy of elite hitters and typically very good blocking that can overpower teams.  But when we go up against teams with similar hitters, we lose because ball control sucks.

I think it’s the culture of the coaching staff. I believe the staff knows how to coach defense, I just don’t think they get through to the entire team to give all out effort all the time, on defense.

When you watch the Big 10 teams and other elite teams, everyone on the floor knows their spacing and are flying around keeping the ball up. It’s a sense of pride and extreme emphasis on those teams. That’s not the feel I get from Elliot’s teams.

And it’s not just the DS’s. How many times do we see the Texas front row turn to pop up a ball after they have been tipped over...almost never. I see it happen often with other elite teams.

Imo, the staff needs to create a greater sense of pride and emphasis about not letting the ball hit the ground for the entire team. Get buy in from the team leaders and let them create some accountability amongst the team.

Jhenna did an admirable job taking over the setter position....but we need a bigger setter who can LOCATE the ball just like her.

Again, it goes back to floor defense if our block can't stop the opposing hitters.

Jerritt, Erik, and Tonya need to wake the fuck up and start coaching our players up in this aspect of the game.

Exactly, the block was actually pretty good tonight with the big exception of their hitter with 25 kills. Still got steam rolled.

  10. Illinois hammering Wiscy right now. Up 2 to 1 and rolling in the 4th. They look good... These Big 10 teams don’t make a lot of mistakes and keep everything off the floor. Long rallies. It’s a scrap for every point.

  11. Mikaya has really developed her all around hitting game this year.  The more I think about it the more I believe her tipping is on purpose most of the time.  Some of it is just the preference or the experience of the hitter. If the set is a little off, some hitters will choose to take a chance and swing anyway (I think Logan does this more) while others, like White, will try and take something off the swing or tip.

Obviously whatever Mikaya is doing, it's working pretty well (Big 12 POY).  I just hope she adjusts as needed when they play the elite teams in the tourney, because those teams don't let many tips hit the ground and instead turn them into good kill opportunities.
