My 8yo started his first year of kid pitch a couple weeks ago. His normal throw has a sidearm hitch that we're working through with some towel drills and other youtube tutorials for fixing it. Surprisingly, over the last week he's ditched his shitty attitude toward going to practice or drilling at home and looks to have found a competitive edge. Probably after gauging himself against some of the better players on his team. He's about 4" taller than the next tallest kid so he's kind of awkward like a baby giraffe.

At the very least, the "want to" has dramatically increased and today there was a school teacher work day, so I showed him a couple drills that he was working on in the yard while I worked from home and took breaks to see how he was doing and work with him a bit.

I'm hoping to fix the hitch in his throw then slide into pitching basics since he's a lefty. Lots of work to do but I couldn't be more proud of the steps he's taken so far.

Sorry for the boring story lol.

Put him at SS and hit him some fungo, having him field the ball and throw to 1B. Whatever is his arm slot throwing from SS-1B is his natural arm slot. Unless he's coming in with a huge negative arm angle from the side when pitching. For a lefty, that would be 6, 7, 8, maybe 9'o'clock, you don't have to correct it *too* much.

Shot Caller is back on. Shawshank is the undisputed GOAT prison movie. But Shot Caller might be Number 2.

My sincerest apologies to Green Mile, Escape From Alcatraz, and American Me. All great films.

    Blood in blood out!

Need some advice on swings. A bunch of the kids on our team a pretty good hitters for their age (6,7,8 year olds, machine pitch) at least in terms of making contact. None of them do any sort of load though so their timing is all over the place. Any drills to get them to load and get better timing?

At that age, we would run variations of this drill. I would use either a speed hurdle, or small soccer done also as a point of reference for their backside. Set the object down on towards back leg. on command, they would slowly step back over the object, engage hip, get into a launch position and swing away. I'd usually have my son hold his swing at extension but they can also do it as a full swing. I like to ask the boys if they can feel the tension on their back hip once they do it correctly vs when they don't. You can do it off a tee, soft toss, angled toss, or front toss and run. A skater drill would also be similar in where they would basically hop from back to side to front side back to back side and then swing away.

I'd also used to get a piece of foam from one of our PT clinics and put on back side and tell the boys to push down into the ground as hard as possible to engage their hip. Lots of times they they don't know what to feel for, I ask the boys if they know what a corkscrew is and explain what that does, our back side/core should look close to that motion.

I liked doing this drill too, to help the boys know what the load portion felt like, basically isolating the steps of a swing. Hard to start doing more advanced drills if we don't have the basics. Pretty simple but I felt it was a great one, especially at early age.

Theres a bunch more you can find, Josh Cathcart has some great ones on YouTube also, hope this gives you a start

  4. Chuy is a gap to gap hitter.

I'm coaching my son's 10U select team again, we're pretty lucky to have a good set of kids and great parents who've been with us for a few years now. We can tell a big part of our success has been the consistency in our roster and culture we've tried to instill since our inception 4+ years ago. It's an absolute blast.

Good luck to all those coaching and playing this spring!

If you’ve never been, ut / lsu will be a very large crowd. LSU and Vanderbilt might be the two best traveling fan bases. Pre buy parking.  Stadium food will be limited, eat before the game

cobos is very close to minute maid, has good food. Itll be packed and hopping. Best one stop place and easy

1820 bar is very close, no food

if you’re going to ninfas pre game, be mindful of the wait. El tiempo is across the street, usually zero wait

voodoo queen (good chicken strips), 8 rows flint (some food), and White rhino are a couple of blocks from an easy rail ride in. Check opening times, perfect for post games

street to kitchen just won a national james beard and almost in front of a rail stop.

champ burger is one block down from street to kitchen, damn good neighborhood spot. All walkable. I walk to all these places and the rail stop is right there

up by the stadium / eado …

    new little woodrows

    rodeo goat

    truckyard

    8th wonder

    hi way cantina

    pizza by the slice spot

ton of other spots. All walkable from astros parking lot. Street parking, be mindful - that area they love to break into cars. Keep them empty, trunks too. If you have a truck, they like the chances you have a pistol under your seat. Last playoffs, hpd had two bait trucks with pistols and maga stickers, both trucks got hit and it still took them an hour to track them down. It was Two guys and they had over 40 pistols

    @UTPhil2006 has a ton of recs …

On top off the 13 recs you just gave ?
