  1. My mother is an extreme narcissist/manipulator, to the point where up until recently, I was the only of her children that hadn't cut her off. Every holiday is a complete stress bomb where she demands that we spend both holidays (Thanksgiving/Christmas) with her. Completely unreasonable given that both my parents and my wife's are divorced, so we've got four families to cater to every holiday, scattered from Waco to New Braunfels. Every god damn year we swear we aren't caving, and every year we end up driving from Austin to Waco to New Braunfels to Wimberley in 24-48 hours on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Mostly to appease her, and because all of our parents, save my dad, host their own holiday and refuse to drive to anyone.
Anyway, she was an absolute terror during my wife's recent pregnancy (baby born in September). Threw a legitimate fit like you'd see a child throw because I pushed back on her inviting 10+ people to my baby shower, that my wife either don't know, or barely know. Decided to stop participating, and didn't show up to the baby shower of her first and only grandchild. Threw another shit fit when I told her that we didn't want family in the room for the baby's delivery (they could come after we moved into recovery). Then, the final meltdown came because of social media. I texted her saying we were on our way to the hospital, and she immediately posted on Facebook that she was going to be a grandma tonight - before we had a chance to tell even the rest of our immediately family. My wife's dad found out we were having a baby via that post. We managed to calm it down, but that's the type of stress you don't need the day and day after you deliver a kid. When I told her that was inconsiderate, she had a complete meltdown, and told me that she was done with me. On the day my son was born.
So anyway, that's not really related to the holidays, but that's my vent.
On the bright side, now that we have the baby, we're drawing a line in the sand on the holidays. All of the family has been notified that for Thanksgiving, we pre-ordered a brisket and some other stuff from Franklin's and will load up on wine and booze. We aren't leaving the house. If anyone wants to come by, that's great, come on by. But don't ask me about side dishes or timing or plans, because there are none, except to drink, eat, and watch football at some point. We're doing the same for Christmas. Frankly, we don't give a shit if anyone even shows. I'm sort of hoping that nobody does, except maybe my dad, her mom, and my brothers, AKA  the sane wing of my extended family.
First time I've looked forward to the holidays in at least 20 years. Fuckin' eh right.

I'm ready gents. Got some sides coming via parents and brothers, but the beef, bourbon and beer is all I am concerned about. One day I'll buy my son a bottle of Weller for getting us out of all the family BS and letting us start this new low-maintenance tradition.

Challenge will be making it through the Saints game before I hit the brisket and booze coma.

Dems got almost 50% of the congressional votes in North Carolina. Obama won it in ‘08 and nearly did again in ‘12. That’s gettable with a candidate that excites the base.

Georgia is now a toss up and shenanigans there this year only get folks fired up.

It’s quite silly to think Wisconsin is a safe GOP state.

The Dem path is much easier than many think. And that’s why they should aim to first turn out the progressives and minorities and only then throw a bone to centrists like me. Kamala/Beto.

Is there a path to 270 without the rust belt? To me the electoral math shows that as the rust belt goes, the presidency will go, regardless of AZ or NC, at least as far as I can tell. If you approach the election with "getting Trump out" as your #1 priority over all else, as it should be, then shouldn't the #1 criteria for a candidate be "who can win the rust belt"?

IMO that's the most important criteria - which candidate can win MI/PA/WI. To me that's Biden, despite his flaws. I believe he wins those states fairly easily, and thus wins the election. It's definitely not a coastal democrat like Harris. That's the exact type of candidate that will lose that area of the country. JMHO. Is it fair - probably not. But it's realpolitik and that's all that matters right now. I think Beto could do it too - I actually think he could dominate the electoral map if he cleans up his non-stump public speaking (IE debates) just a bit.

Genuinely asking though. Is there a path to 270 without the rust belt, for either side? And I don't mean "well they could win NC" type paths - because it seems that if the candidate wins NC, they'll already have the presidency in the bag in a rout.

California is an example of what NOT to do. It's saving grace is the weather while on the coast but then you have the earthquakes and wildfires. Fuck that.

Yeah, must be tough being the center of innovation for entire planet and having world class food, drink, music, art, and culture everywhere around you. But they do have some immigrants there :(

I don't like California because I don't really like the people, but anyone who thinks California is struggling in any way imaginable is beyond stupid. It's one of the most prosperous and desirable places on Earth.

  4. Can someone point me to current GOP platforms that would cause an educated 19-29 year old to move from the center or the left to the right?  I get it, it used to happen a lot.  Lower taxes, more "family" shit. But what now?

I've certainly become more conservative, at least fiscally, as I've moved into my 30s, started a business, had a kid, etc.

I also voted straight ticket dem for the first time ever.

Conservative =/= today's GOP. The tired trope of "people age into the Republican" party won't hold up. People age into fiscal responsiblity, but we don't age into hatred and bile and creating our own self worth on being better than others. I'm not a democrat. They're pretty terrible as a party. The fact that Pelosi is even a consideration for speaker is an absolute abortion. But until anyone and everyone who supports and enables what's happening right now is gone, she and they have my vote. And I'm not alone.

Sum sum, yall fucked, trumpkins. World is changing. Sorry you aren't prepared. Deal with it and take the loss pussy.

  5. Actually managed to save my kickass gray horse that I drove off the cliff. Hustled to Valentine, bought a horse reviver, and made it back to him in time to save him.

Good tip ChickenSandwich - will try that. I'm pretty tight on cash right now anyway, since I'm just in chapter 2. Bookman - if I knew I was going to commit a crime I'd have put a mask on, but I was just riding around and got ambushed. Didn't set out to get shot at, accidentally shoot a horse in self defense, then get charged with animal cruelty.

Any tips on randomly making money? I seem to stay low on cash pretty often. I know I can fence valuables later on, but don't have that option yet.

  6. How the hell do you avoid getting bounties on you? I got ambushed by O'Driscolls while just randomly riding around. They shot first, I killed them. Insta-notice that someone witnessed me committing "animal cruelty". I guess I shot a horse in the skirmish. How is that on me, and how do I avoid crap like that? That's the 3rd or 4th time I've committed a "crime" that was mostly unavoidable.

Second question: So I killed that witness as well, then ran off as fast as I could to get away from any more witnesses, and ran my bad ass new gray horse off a cliff and killed him. I don't have a horse reviver. Do I have time to make it back to camp, get another horse, get to Valentine, buy a horse reviver and get back to him to save him?

Not a productive session today. Best game ever.

I didn't really care who won but it's pretty pathetic what we get regarding news coverage.    I switched between national CBS and CNN coverage and the complete bias for the Ds was so very evident.  Announcers were giddy when showing results that favored the Ds and outright glum when showing an R in control of a race.   It was glaringly obvious who they wanted to win.   I'm sure Fox was just as bad the other direction but I don't watch their crap.

Why can't someone cover an election without the obvious bias?

I mean that's just cable news now. I think most of the folks on CNN or MSNBC are genuinely liberal leaning, and have difficulty hiding it. Forget who it was but one of the CNN guys last night said "this is great news!" then realized how biased it was after a pause, and had to follow it with "for the democrats". I wish they'd make more of an effort to appear neutral, but cable news is just politics as a sport now anyway.

But, by the nature of their job, media is going to have a broad worldview, and is going to have traveled all over the country and world. People with a broad worldview overwhelmingly vote D, so it sort of comes with the territory.

  8. Looks much different. And delicious.

Have one last random question. How do you guys crack pepper in large quantities? My little $5 mill took about 20 minutes to make enough for the butt.

ETA: lol. Definitely powder. Don't even think we stock garlic salt.

  9. How did you apply the rub? Is it possible the salt/pepper separated a bit and thus providing uneven mix in coverage?
I go higher on the pepper myself, but dayum that rub is thick on there and awful white lookin.
Just sorta threw it around in a solo cup. It was mixed fine. I went a little heavy on garlic powder vs. Franklins video, as my wife and I are both garlic junkies. Might explain the color.

  10. Yeah that does look really thick.  How’d you even get it that thick?  I always applied as liberally as I could get it and mine never looks that thick.  It’s almost like you added some kind of starch to it?  Mine always has several spots with meat showing through.  Did you maybe pour a layer on top to somewhat pile it up then just move it straight to the smoker?  Like you didn’t dump the excess?  So the top had a much heavier rub than the rest?  I think mine have always been pretty equal on all surfaces.  So I let any pile up fall off.

I don’t know man...I’m just throwing darts because it interests me and I follow the same video tutorial as you.  But there are a ton of people on here who are much better at all of this than me.

Rubbed w olive oil then basically dumped on and sorta rubbed it in. Definitely didn't shake or make any attempt to get the excess off. The excess on top probably just stayed piled on since it went from counter to grill looking like that. Thinking that was the mistake.

I'm doing another one sunday, I'm going to try a more reasonable amount of rub (and a much bigger butt now that i know it turns out so well). Will report back!

  11. Huh...not sure then.  I’ve always found Franklin’s 1:1 ratio to be about perfect.  I guess “salt to taste” is a real thing.
I'm thinking too much rub in general, because the paprika was pretty strong as well. Forgot i had a pic pre cook. How's this look? Too heavy handed? 337e4c21be57d8409529e0818ab8cc5c.jpg

  12. What kind of salt did you use?  I use the Morton’s Kosher salt and the Franklin video 1:1 thing was fine.  That salt has kind of a light flaky texture which is similar in size and shape to a coarse ground pepper.  However, I think if you tried it with a salt that’s more dense, like a regular table salt or especially some of those sea salts that are really stout, you could be fucked.
It was Morton Kosher as well.

  13. In the PBS series, he does use 1:1 Coarse Kosher Salt and Coarse Black Pepper by volume with the rest of the rub being very small amounts.
I've made my pork shoulder rubs just like that for the last year and have not found them to be too salty.  It might be less about the ratio and more about how much salt you used (since you say it was a small pork shoulder).  Or, you might just like it less salty, in which case, as you mention, you could use less salt.
A lot of people on here say to do the ratio by weight rather than volume.  But in the video, he's going by volume, which is what I have taken to doing as well.
End product looks delicious for what it's worth.
Definitely like things pretty salty. I think i may have just gone too heavy on the rub period. Going to fire another one up this weekend and try a little lighter on the rub. See how it goes.

  14. Thanks guys. Just trying to figure out if it's feasible and makes sense to do before i seriously pitch it as part of my proposal. I'd get a lawyer to draw everything up if it gets that far.

This whole idea doesn’t make sense to me. If it is a public company, the stock trades openly, so it can be exchanged for cash at any time.

There is only one reason the company would want to do it, to use shares held but not distributed. I would be very surprised that they would want to do that with you. They won’t.

Also, I can’t see any reason for you to want to do it. If you like the company go buy the stock with your fee you’ve earned.

Makes sense. My thought is that they might be willing to pay more in stock than in cash for budgetary/AOP reasons. My prospect is HR, and they typically have leftover shares in their employee incentive pool at EOY. So the VPHR mentioned they might could pull from that. I don't know how realistic it is from their side, but it's been discussed.

Getting a good accountant or tax advisor is probably your best bet.

    However, a few things:

    1.  What is the disposition of your relationship going forward with the purchaser?  In other words, are you retiring and moving on or will you continue to work for the purchaser going forward?

    2.  You can't contribute stock into your SEP.  IRA contributions must be made in cash.  If the stock was in another qualified retirement account/program, you may be able to rollover this stock.

There may be some things you can do dependent to delay or minimize your tax burden dependent on the relationship you'll have with the purchaser going forward.  There may not be.  All depends.  Defer to an expert.

Thanks much. Relationship would be annual services agreement, renewed yearly if I do my job well. Though I'd probably not want ti take half in stock every year forward.

  15. I'm sort of at a loss of where to even begin with this one, so any help is much appreciated.

I'm in a late stage B2B sale with a company that's on the smaller side of publicly traded companies. I believe in this company quite a bit, and one thing that's been discussed is accepting stock for part of the total outlay of the contract. Discussion hasn't gotten too far, but I'm considering taking 50% in stock and 50% in cash. My company structure is a simple S-Corp with me as the sole employee. I've got an SEP IRA set up through Wells Fargo, to which I'm contributing (via the S-Corp) the max annually.

I'm just not sure how to even approach it and how it would work logistically.. some questions:

    - Assuming it's even possible, how does the flow of the stock work? Assume that Client gives stock to S-Corp. How do I then transfer the stock to Employee (me)  - and further, how do I actually put that stock into my IRA? All I do is buy index funds monthly, I have no idea how to go about taking a stock grant and putting it into an IRA.

    - How do I properly value the stock? Assume I'd just take the payment number and divide it by the current share price, and that's the number of shares I'd ask for? Do most companies value stock lower than cash? In other words should I ask for a slightly higher total value of stock than cash would be?

    - Any weird tax issues?

    Thanks in advance guys.
