I look at it from the point of view as a father, that hopes for all to be well & healthy regardless of political affiliation...
I saw a twitter post of a little girl struggling for breath makes you wanna be there for your kids to the moon & back...

I figured might as well play the song in the screwed version since its all we have left, is a society kinda screwed up...

You think Arizona State, Oregon State, and Wazzu would leave the PAC for this? I am not sure you have been paying attention.

No... No... I think those would be the schools that get left out of a (not likely soon) B1G raid of 5 or 6 PAC brands...

Hotline mailbag: Pac-12 expansion strategy, scenarios for a breakup, vulnerable schools and the potential for alliances

By JON WILNER | jwilner@bayareanewsgroup.com | Bay Area News Group

If the Pac-12 dissolved, the California schools, Oregon and Washington would be desirable in a post-modern configuration of major college football; everyone else would need a lifeline. Oregon State and Arizona would seem particularly vulnerable, in our opinion, based on the metrics that drive media value.

But the Pac-12 is a long way from that point.

We cannot offer any guarantees, but there is zero indication of an imminent breakup.

If anything, the level of solidarity seems stronger now than it has in years, largely because the schools (i.e., the presidents and chancellors) are all-in with new commissioner George Kliavkoff and view this as a reset opportunity for the collective — a chance to rethink, and reshape, major college sports on the West Coast.

(Had Larry Scott remained in charge, the level of solidarity would have been lower and the potential for breakup higher.)

From this corner of the galaxy, there are seemingly two paths to Pac-12 dissolution — to the Cougars, Beavers and Wildcats fighting for their football existence:

    1. The Pac-12 dissolves.

The most immediate existential threat to the conference would be an aggressive Big Ten desperate to grow following the SEC’s move.

But we’re deeply skeptical for a slew of reasons — none greater than this: The conferences have a shared history on the field (via the Rose Bowl) and deep alignment at the university level, both professionally and personally.

Ohio State president Kristina Johnson is a Stanford alum.

Michigan president Mark Schissel is a former Cal dean.

Northwestern president Morton Schapiro is a former USC dean.

Would the Big Ten presidents approve any expansion plan that kills off the Pac-12? In our view, that outcome seems unlikely.

Even if the Big Ten turned predatory and offered membership to the California schools en masse, Cal and Stanford are more likely to stop playing major college football than lunge for cash in a conference 2,000 miles away.

The prospect of the California schools splintering off from the Pac-12, much less from each other, is a leap currently based solely on illogic.

We could get deep into the machinations, but that seems unnecessary given the current state of affairs.

The Big Ten and Pac-12 presidents do not, in our opinion, have the justification, support or stomachs to initiate the series of radical moves needed to drive a stake into the Pac-12.

    2. The Power Five dissolves.

If you’re sketching scenarios for Pac-12 destruction, this is the more reasonable scenario — and yet it seems unlikely to materialize anytime soon.

What’s the structure? Simple: The most successful, most valuable, most committed football schools form a 30- or 35-team super-league that’s essentially a mini-NFL — and would, thanks to overjoyed media companies, mint money.

The remaining 30-35 schools in the Power Five, combined with the other 60-odd schools in the FBS, would continue playing football, albeit with a cost structure resembling what we now see in the FCS. (Revenue would plunge, so expenses would have to drop, as well.)

Would the likes of USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington be willing to join the equivalent of a college football Premiership?

Perhaps, because every Power Five league would break apart, too.

The ACC’s Wake Forest, Duke and Virginia (and many others) wouldn’t be involved in the super-league.

Nor would the Big Ten’s Purdue, Northwestern, Indiana, Minnesota and Illinois.

Heck, even the SEC would split up, to some degree.

In this end-game, the top West Coast football schools aren’t leaving the Pac-12 for membership in another conference.

They’re leaving for an exclusive, football-only entity while keeping the conference intact in all other — albeit lesser — respects.

Many of the Hotline’s most trusted industry sources believe the mini-NFL model is inevitable, although not imminent.

As a matter of fact, as beat writer on all things PAC related speaks on how the league would look to move ahead...

And here is a clip of ballcoach Bob Stoops, how OU wanted to keep OSU in a move, but couldn't get SEC to blink...

Clemson and Florida State may not be Texas and ou, but there is a lot of value in blowing up the ACC if the SEC has grand visions in the long-term. Go to 20 with those two and North Carolina plus Virginia and you force Notre Dame into a decision. Pick off the BIG three to close the door on the rust belt option and Notre Dame has to come. Grab some PAC schools and select a couple more BIGs or ACCs to get to a national conference with four 8 or 9 team divisions.

I figured that as an option before as well, what if (until 2035/ 2040) we have two leagues of 24..?

Any Big 12 expansion that doesn't start with San Diego State is crazy.

Here ya go 2 different setups where B1G raids PAC: I figure WVU goes to ACC in both models/ Kansas goes B1G (with either Colorado or Missouri) -

The Big12 was in the power 5 with Texas and Oklahoma due to their autobid to the Sugar bowl which likely will not be renewed and they will go the way of Big East football.  You are correct however that they are a part of the autonomous 5 for NCAA governance purposes, however if we’re talking about breaking away from the NCAA that won’t mean anything anymore.  The point is that a tournament with the SEC/ACC/B1G/PAC doesn’t NEED any of the other schools.  There will be plenty of great basketball schools left out like Villanova, Gonzaga, Georgetown, UConn, UNLV, Memphis, Butler, BYU, Cincy, Xavier, Wichita St plus the remaining Big 12 including Kansas (though I bet KU sneaks in eventually).  Baylor has no chance for reasons outside of sports.

The Power4 basketball tournament that has 5 of the 6 bluebloods (likely 6 of 6 once Kansas gets their spot) and vast majority of the elite perennial top 25 programs would be the bigger than any left over division I tournament the NCAA could put together, and if it’s even close (though I doubt it would be) they could simply invite over a basketball conference like the Big East or A10 to join their tournament.  Money split between 65-80 teams is more than dividing it between 360+.

I'm just glad the pro-OU to B1G faction (of last 10 years) can chill out on dirt board... I never understood a midnset of leaving your arch-rival...
It's a sad time to lose Oklahoma State/ Kansas/ Iowa State from Big8, Texas Tech/ TCU from extra Lone Star games, but SEC is "best move"...

SEC offers keeping OU-UT, adding A&M in Texas again, getting Big8 foe Mizzou back/ starting something with "Battle for Ft Smith" in Arkie...

Brilliant idea. Make sure your conference usually doesn't have a team in the CFP instead of always having at least one.

2 SEC teams, Big 10 champ, ACC champ will be the situation more often than not if they don't expand and there are no other changes. The Pac-12, making themselves more irrelevant one decision at a time.

Actually the non-SEC schools might be better off waiting until after the verdict next summer on pay for play/ unlimited caps...

As there's a rumor (per Flug) of more than a few schools will drop from an "all-pay" model, then figure CFP expanding to 16..?

California AB 1887 prohibits state schools funding travel to any state that has what they deem to be discriminatory laws. Texas is one of the states on their banned list. So I can’t see the PAC taking any school from Texas, Oklahoma, or Kansas. Apparently they are cool with Utah though.

That's for civic conventions & mess, it doesn't affect privates as USC & Stanford/ UCLA & Cal pay for travel themselves for coaches ect...
Now, will PAC go through with adding non-OU & UT teams..? I dunno, but they can dictate the league how they want w/o the "big dogs"...

We might be more likely to see Tech & Poke hold out for PAC/ 'Hawk & 'Clone for B1G/ & everyone else 'fighting' to overtake AAC teams...
It is a case kinda like if XII & AAC had a conversation in one sentence on this, one thinks XII has more value/ 1 thinks AAC is more stable...

  10. Welp, XII is more or less dead but through all of this I got to see Oklahoma keep our arch-rival, that meant so much..! SEC here we come, suck it aggy..!

In losing Bedlam/ getting whipped by KU in hoops/ shootouts at Tech/ upsets to KSU & ISU, thanks for the memories, but on to a new "portal" in Dixie...
