  1. Went out to check my hose bibs around dark and 3 out of 4 were frozen. Quick hit with the blow dryer and 2/3 were operational again in no time. Wrapped the fuck out of them and built shelters around them. Been dropping my faucets inside like a mother since Friday night.

The one that wouldn’t unfreeze is supplied by a line that runs in the attic above the garage (which is uninsulated) into my spray foam sealed attic above the rest of the house. Hit it with the laser thermometer in the attic above the garage and the pipe wrap was showing 16. I guess I’m just hoping the pex can handle it at this point. Fuck.

  2. Has anyone heard about rolling blackouts with PEC?  My sister said that she saw it on her neighborhood facebook.

The power grid is getting slammed... ERCOT forecast has demand exceeding supply tonight at 9. Urging customers to conserve electricity to prevent rolling blackouts. Unplug/turn off shit you’re not using.
  3. This is probably a series of stupid questions, but should I be doing anything with the beverage fridge on my outdoor kitchen? Should I unplug it once the temperature drops into the 20's/teens? If it's well below freezing for 24+ hours, will the drinks inside freeze?

Drinks aren’t already frozen? Otherwise, you should be drinking them now so they don’t go to waste when they inevitably freeze and explode.

If we're talking about cutting some Oaks because they might drop branches and/or topple over, that's perfectly fine. I may have to do it myself this weekend.  Routine pruning of Oaks should be completed by Groundhog Day, but mid-February isn't that ridiculous despite what City of Austin says.

However, the risk to routine and widespread pruning of Oaks during this cold front is significant.  Yes pruning in extreme heat or extreme cold is perfectly fine.  But what could very much invite Oak Wilt with a passion is what we're gonna see in the next week...in one calendar week...we're gonna go from single digit temps to 70 degrees and sunny in 7 days.  That is a VIP invitation to Oak Wilt, those kinds of extreme temp swings in  compressed timeframe.  Again, cut if you have to...but don't make this weekend "yardwork day" just for the heck of it.  I did 3 days of heavy, heavy pruning over MLK weekend and that's it for me until July or August.  The cold is fine for it (of course the moisture is gonna be a factor), but the temp swing we'll see back up by next weekend is not great for Oak Wilt prevention.  My two cents...

Regardless, seal the damn wounds if you cut your oak trees.

  5. Would shutting of the main line to the house not work? Would you also need to drain the lines throughout the house and outdoor faucets? I may just fill a bathtub with water to use to flush the toilet and go without water service for 48 hours. What am I missing?

Be sure to turn off your water heater if you plan to drain the lines.

  6. FHS has been sending out emails within a week after first injection with designated 2nd shot appt times scheduled out appropriately according to when you got your first stick.

2 weeks since my first poke at FHS. 3 family members also at 2 weeks from a FHS poke with no email regarding 2nd appointment. Not freaking out yet but the comments made today during the WilCo press briefing are saying this is normal.
  7. Did they validate that you were in a 1a/1b group to get it? I heard from a friend that is 40 and no underlying conditions and they told her "no" when she pulled up at her appointment time. I've heard mixed reviews on what they are doing.

I was asked which group and what pre-existing condition qualified me for that group. No proof required.
  8. For those that signed up and did the shot at Kelly Reeves, did you get a form to fill out beforehand emailed to you? Did you fill that out and upland DL and Insurance card?

Yes. Otherwise there’s another lengthy line you gotta go through for paperwork.
  9. I'm surprised case numbers are increasing. The virus didn't follow the attenuated sine wave that I predicted. The largest spike in cases wasn't the first outbreak back in March and the spikes didn't decrease at each succeeding outbreak from Labor Day/School start, Thanksgiving, and then Christmas/New Years. I thought the stupid people would catch it first and then after awhile there wouldn't be enough stupid people to spread it, but I guess once it got into schools and workplaces reopened and people got lax, there were too many avenues for spread.

Could the new strains be increasing hold and starting to drive up the new case totals?

  10. I think getting shots in arms is the most important thing right now.  You're fine.  It is unfortunate that the rollout is such a cluster, but that's not your fault.  Go get it, and help us all get closer to HI.

My wife is a healthcare worker and got her first shot of Moderna this morning.  It was available to her previously but this is the first time her schedule allowed.  I'll get it down the line when it's more readily available.  I'm low risk and 100% work-from-home, so I'm good for a while.

Ill be better prepared the 2nd shot

If you had a strong reaction to the first shot, you might not have much on the 2nd. Running theory is you may have been exposed previously and the 1st shot triggers the immune response.

That or the second shot is really going to kick you in the balls.

  12. Rural and smaller town Texas has been getting lots of doses. Large urban centers have not, relative to size.

If you think that isn’t political, you must be new to Texas.

Oh I’m certain it’s political. Just not seeing enough people calling that out.

How efficient has Austin been getting through their doses?  I think that is supposed to be part of the analysis. If you are sitting on doses at the end of the week you aren't getting more the next week.

The Wilco FHS hub has been going through their entire allotment in 2-3 days for the past 2 weeks they've gotten shots. I haven't been following APH's numbers as closely but they appear to be moving a tad slower. Might be due to their ridiculous internal prioritization policies.
