Texans - As our pipes thaw out and we start to turn our water back on to homes. Please note the following steps:

Turn off all faucets inside the home (except for a tub spout if exterior faucets are frozen).

Turn on exterior hose bib closest to the water meter.

Very slowly turn the valve back (property owner’s valve or meter valve.
Purge water at exterior hose bib for 2 minutes, or tub spout if bib is frozen.
Turn off water at exterior hose bib or tub spout.

Look at water meter face for the “tattletale”, a small triangle on the water meter face (see photo). If any water is running inside the house (filling water heater, toilets, etc.), the triangle will spin. If there are any leaks on the piping, the triangle will spin.
Visually inspect and listen for any signs of leakage.

If triangle is spinning, and it is verified that no fixtures are filling or turned on, turn off the water to the house again and drain down water as best as possible from an exterior hose bib if possible. Once off, leave hot and cold faucets slightly open to allow for air displacement.

If no leaks are detected, purge water at tub spout first, and continue to open faucets to displace air for pressurization.

There will be lots of scale & debris flaking from the interior of the pipes. Purging water at exterior hose bibs will help prevent the initial load from lodging in your faucets. Plumbers will be very busy for weeks getting homes back online, and basic faucet repairs will be lower priority. Following this turn on procedure will help to safely get your water back online.
*Please note that I will not be readily available to respond to comments as I have been addressing the plumbing needs of the community. The calls, emails, texts and social media communications have occupied most of my time as we prepare to get our vans back on the road tomorrow. Best to all! We’re in this together.

  2. Austin Water has tweets about SW Austin but fuck all about all the other areas that are evidently fucked.

I worry about some crazy no water Chicago Fire situation. Not like we dont have desperate Mrs. O'Learys and assorted barn animals trying to keep warm.

Probably already said, but can I shower if there's a boil notice? Ours doesn't specify.

Sure. Arguably you should be conserving but do a quick 3 min shower. I've showered with pails of untreated beaver fever water. Just don't drink it and keep your eyes shut, just in case. (Caveat: I have zero expertise)

Friends of ours who live in new garden homes by Lakeline Station have no hot water. Nor do their neighbors. Builder installed tankless units on the outside of the homes (I'm guessing to eliminate venting issues). Apparently they didn't think that one all the way through.

Mother did remodel to tankless and this is second time it frozen up (78759, NW Hills). She is already saying she's going to add back the gas waterheater in the garage.

  5. Tasters choice house blend. Fathers day shutterfly mug with pictures of my kids. (Black ceramic, so I never have to wash it. Get a new one next Fathers day. Retire the old one.) Tap water. Microwave 1 minute. If want to be fancy I add a little crystal on the top. Sort of like barrista foam art.

  6. Trust me, the aeon pro and nexus pro are bananas. The nerds in /r/nerf would agree Adventure Force is just Wally Worlds house brand... not sure who makes the nexus and aeon. Dont really care. They are legit 40-50% more powerful (by fps) than a 'normal' nerf. They aren't even really kids toys any more. There mere brandishing of my aeon terrifies my kids. I only use it from very far. Up close it might be child abuse. It might be worth it.

  7. since yall brought up John Graves and pissing off the porch...

Pissing off the porch seemed like the perfect metaphor for his chosen profession until one night last January, when John Graves was heading outside to relieve himself and fell down the stairs. His longtime friend Bill Wittliff had warned him this might happen. No bones were broken, but there resulted some impressive damage to his internals and his sense of dignity. After three trips to the hospital and a surgery to repair his prostate, he was still hobbling about on his cane four months later when I visited him at his home outside Glen Rose, southwest of Fort Worth, on the spread he calls Hard Scrabble.

Further, there is a part of Goodbye to a River where he describes an old man who every morning got up and pissed in the same spot, the salt killing the grass and leaving a bare spot. I think of that often.

  8. My plan is to retire early (52) in a decade. Every week I'll drive up to the ranchette (51 ac near Goldthwaite) Sunday afternoon for 3 nights, and return to a condo or townhome (something with basically zero maintenance) in Austin. So 3 nights rural, 4 nights city. Figure this way I can have poker games with my buddies in town, see art movies, eat Ethiopian or thai food, see docs, and yet still enjoy spraying mesquite with diesel and trooping around cutting cedar with a gear bypass. Not sure if the wife will join me - she's a teacher and a workaholic and will probably never stop. But that's okay, the 600 sq ft barndominium aint much for luxury living anyway.

With covid limited kids rec sports on weekends, this past year has been awesome. I've probably driven up 45 out of 50 weeks. The low this weekend is like 12, but I still might go. What the hell else am I going to do?
