Same 'hood. They ever find out what did it? Saw an AFD tweet that it was an "undetermined ignition source on the back patio." I automatically think BBQ pit, but not in the middle of the night.

My son was woken up buy a couple of loud pops immediately before the fire started, and a few other neighbors heard it too. The house had a nice outdoor kitchen, and the current thinking (according to the owners) is that there was a leak in the gas line that led to the outdoor cooking range, which caught fire and caused the explosion that kicked everything off.

  2. Our neighbors lost their house and pets in a fire the night before last. We're in north Austin near the Domain. Everyone on the street was standing out there around 2:30 am watching the fire department do its thing and I remember thinking it was really a goddamn miracle that AFD managed to get the fire out before it spread. The houses on our street back to a greenbelt, which of course was already terribly dry, and the fire started on their backyard deck. Awful.

I'm still wondering if, by virtue of being the one to press the reset button, the universe was remade as Allison wanted it (even subconsciously).  She has her loved ones.  Luther doesn't.  She might still have her powers (she didn't get drained to power the machine).  The others don't.

    Spoiler

I thought about this, but I don't think it explains why Reginald got Abigail back and apparently now is successful enough to have a bunch of buildings named for him in the new reality. Alison doesn't give a shit about him. I did find it weird that Ray is now back, living in her house in LA, and maybe is the father of Claire. That's not just going back and resetting things to the way they were; it's completely changing them. Sloane could be gone because the Sparrows only existed as a replacement for the Umbrellas after they messed with the original timeline in the second season, but it doesn't completely add up.

  4. I feel like the show (and commentary in general) has really glossed over

    Spoiler

Alison using her powers to almost rape Luther. I've always found her powers to be among the most unsettling because of what she'd be able to do if she were evil, and this season drove that home. That scene in particular was so dark, but a few minutes later it was like it had never happened, and it wasn't even mentioned again except for Alison's half-assed apology a few episodes later.

(not sure if we are still spoilering but doing it just in case)

Yeah I don’t fully grasp that the captain cut the line instead of reeling them back in. And if they don’t have the power to reel them in with high winds, perhaps that is a problem that should be addressed earlier.

I’ve never gone parasailing but I’ve always assumed it was a cheaper and less safe sky diving. Zip lines can also be sketchy depending on how well the lines are maintained.

This article looks like it's saying two different things, too. At first it says:

    Quote

The individuals were parasailing shortly before 5:30 p.m. when the vessel's tow line snapped, causing them to drag across the water, according to a Monroe County Sheriff's Office incident report.

"Snapped" makes it sound like an equipment failure. Then towards the bottom:

    Quote

When this took place, the captain "cut the line" that was tethered to three parasailers," who then "dropped from an unknown height and dragged through the water by the inflated parasail

"Cut" makes it sound deliberate. So which was it? I'm guessing the answer is that it snapped because it was cut.

All this just confirms my decision to sit at the tiki bar and drink instead of going parasailing with the family when we're at the beach.

    1. The California scenes were dumb. They wanted to show Eleven struggling without power and Jonathan growing distant from Wheeler. They could of done it a thousand better ways.
    2. They did a good subtle job with Will being gay. That being said, I feel like they are doing that because his character is pointless at this junction. Kind of lame to just make him gay to see interesting.
    3. Initially I thought the Hopper arc was way too much, but it’s been satisfying watching him and the man with no face.
    4. I don’t think they telegraphed One too much. I think it was well done. Having him monologue an explanation of the story so it all makes sense is lazy ass writing.
    5. overall enjoyable.

    Re: Will

    Spoiler

I definitely got the “Will might be gay” vibe last season. They were much more subtle about it, but it was there. Like when he’s trying to get the other guys to play D&D and Mike gets mad and yells something like “I’m sorry you’re not interested in girls!”

  7. I've actually really liked the longer episodes. The editing could be tighter, but they at least seem to be answering questions as they introduce new ones, and it doesn't feel rushed. A few thoughts:

    Spoiler

I don't get how One turned into Vecna after El pushed him through the gate she made, but I'll let it go. Still here for it.

Loving Jaqen H'ghar as the security guard. Here's hoping they let the Russian sidekick live this season.

I guess Steve and Nancy have been endgame this whole time? It makes more sense than her and Jonathan, honestly. Their pairing always seemed weird to me.

Fuck everything about that article and the morons who subscribe to that thinking.

Took me a few minutes to realize that that post wasn't a joke.

It really is crazy how far the Abbotts and Patricks and Cruzes and their ilk will bend over backwards to claim that mass shootings have nothing to do with gun control, and refuse out-of-hand to even have a real conversation about it with anyone who disagrees with their policies. If I have a pond, and my fish keep dying, at some point I have to stop trying to treat individual fish and acknowledge that there's something in the water.

That photo lineup of Eleven and everyone else in the cast was like the modern equivalent of the Patrick Swayze / Chris Farley sketch.  “All of you should be very proud of yourselves for getting here.  But when it comes to picking who is still going to be a star as an adult, we’re going to go with Eleven.  I can’t stress enough how tough of a decision this was for us, but I guess ultimately the deciding factor was she looks beautiful and glamorous, and you all look and dress like weirdos.”

Basically the same trajectory as the Harry Potter cast.

  10. I mentioned this on Shaggy back in the day, but my best friend's daughter died of SIDS in 2009, at 7 weeks old. She was at work and her husband found the baby when he went to see why her nap was longer than usual. To this day my friend (J) will say that she thinks she gave the baby mono, which J was diagnosed with shortly after the baby died, even though they couldn't find anything wrong during the autopsy. It was obvious to everyone that she just needed something concrete to blame, and it was easier to blame herself than anyone else. She and her husband didn't want to get pregnant again, and several years later they adopted a child to accompany their older daughter, who was 2 when the baby died. Anyway, maybe this news will help ease her mind, as much as anyone's mind could be eased in this situation.

I also don't think anyone is going to seriously choose or eliminate a college based on the access to abortion.

Were I a high school senior today, I don't know that I would choose or eliminate a college specifically because of access to abortion, but I would certainly correlate that access to the general attitude toward women in that state, and wonder how seriously I'd be taken if I were to be assaulted, especially if that assault resulted in a pregnancy. It would be a hard enough situation without being in a state where, for example, there are legislators who think women who have abortions should be charged with assault or homicide, which could lead to the death penalty. And those are all considerations I would've thought about before we got to where we are now, with Roe about to be overturned. It's bad enough to worry about being attacked; it's a whole other level of awful to think of what the aftermath could be like in a state where I couldn't make medical decisions about my own body.

    PNG talk not going away...

Probably the loudest HS football game I ever attended was 1999 PNG vs Stephenville 4A state championship game in the Dome.  Stephenville won with little Briles running for 3 TD iirc.

Anyway, PNG really showed up, completely filling their side of the Dome, including up to the rainbow sections.  Stephenville didn't have as many fans but everyone had their metal coffee can (or propane tank) full of ball bearings and shook them all game long.

I graduated in 1999 - Dustin Long was a year behind me in school, so this was my freshman year at UT. Me and the guy I was dating at the time met my parents at Kyle Field for the semifinal that year. It was so exciting. PNG had gradually gotten better in their division since I'd been there, and even though they lost to Stephenville that year in the final, it was a great game.

Is that the place where the drunk dude dove off the dock and got killed by the alligator? I believe his last words were "Man, fuck that gator!" (I'm being completely serious)

Yeah.  It was.  I went to school with the two guys who tracked down the and shot the gator

Ah, right - so I didn't make it up. And I do remember that gator story now that you mention it.
