The point is, players of a certain talent immediately transcend above other, more experienced players. That’s the level of talent we should always hope to bring in, and unlike Tom Herman’s dumb ass, get them on the field immediately.

I’ve loved me some Brooks, what little we’ve seen, but here’s a reminder about expectations of the program. His offer list:

That was before he had a monster HS senior season in 2020.  Here's what his UT Bio says about that year: Gained 3,849 yards from scrimmage and scored 65 offensive TD's (70 total) as a senior; helped Hallettsville to a 13-3 record and a Texas 3A D-I state runner-up finish.

Even if one acknowledges that  recruiting and other roster management aspects of being a CFB head coach are dramatically different in the pre- and post-NIL eras and that Sark is more advantaged in the current era, which I do agree with, that does not make his time at USC and UW totally irrelevant bases for evaluating his merits (and prospects) as a head coach.

None of this matters.  Sark has two years to bury Seven Win Steve for good, or he's gone.  The ability to replace him with equal or better once we're in the SEC is so much better than when we were stuck in a 10-team Big 12 that everyone believed was destined to be carved up like the PAC was this summer.  We've transformed the athletic department and facilities part of this equation as far as it will go.  The recruiting is as good as it's been since the last time we had a dynasty.  We go as far as our coaching will take us from here on out.

I dunno man.  Alabama white sauce is delicious, even if it looks like you got a rotisserie chicken from Krispy Kreme.  Don't fear the BBQ Bird Bukake.

Your offense loses two possessions when you block a punt for a TD and return an Interception for a TD. Brings down your offensive numbers.

Yep.  Between defensive scores, decent punt returns, and the unfortunate INT on the first drive, the offense didn't have a lot of opportunities to produce long drives before giving the ball over to Card, who went straight into shell-shocked-by-Arkansas mode.  It wasn't the prettiest 52-10, but lets not pretend that that there wasn't some improvement.  Last year this game would have been more like 41-24, easily, and Sark would have had to dip deep into his bag of tricks to get it there.

Someone post the Humidor. My IT account is jacked up.

    Quote

Team Humidor: Team notes, best player by position, top 10 players by season's end

    — IT was told energy and competition this week “was amazing. The team was ready to work, ready to practice.” If it’s like that for the week before the week, next week should be really good ahead of the opener against UL-M.

    — This week has been structured like a real game week. To that end, they’ll hold a walk-through today before Saturday’s mock game. The entire day will feature the same structure of the actual game day, right down to meal, meetings, chapel services, even getting taped.

Along with the walk through today, they’ll have the same game week Friday routine right down to team movie night.

    — We were asked if those players who are expected to redshirt this year will lift three times a week in order to not sacrifice much-needed physical development over the course of the season. Yes, they will, but we think the main players will also lift three times a week, just in a way designed to not break them down. Basically, those two groups will be on different regimens.

    — We heard about a little more 11 personnel recently. That returns Jordan Whittington home to the slot position and brings Casey Cain onto the field at boundary receiver.

    — One source who has been mentioning lack of team speed for a decade called recently and said, “They definitely have some guys that can run, they’re just so young. They have the talent but need some time.” In the 10 minute conversation he probably mentioned improved team speed 4-5 times. Over the years he has complained about team speed countless times. It was a good call.

We’ll have more team content throughout the weekend, but for now we’ll focus on an interesting interaction we had on Friday. We asked a source a very simple question, “in order, who are the ten best players on the team?”

[long pause] “You mean now, or by the end of the season?”

He struggled to name the 10 best now, so we decided to start going position by position and naming the guys who are either the best at their position or definitely under consideration for the top 10.

(Don’t focus on the list so much, it’s just a delivery method and a way to get him thinking and talking about the players)

QB: “Sark is going to put Quinn in position to produce. The way he’s improving through practice he’s probably one of the top players already but definitely by the end of the year.”

RB: “Bijan is the best player on the team, obviously. Roschon is on the list, too.”

WR: “Everyone knows X is on it, but Whittington is too. He’s so versatile — they can line him up anywhere.”

OL: “Banks might be on the list now, but definitely by the end of the year. Another freshman, Cole Hutson is going to be good by the end of the year. They were okay with moving Junior to play him, that tells you something. I personally think Jake Majors is going to surprise people this season. Hayden Conner is steady.”

TE: “Ja’Tavion Sanders might be on the list now. I feel like he’s going to get some well-timed targets this year and make some big plays.”

DT: “Byron Murphy’s an easy one. Probably the third best player on the team right now.”

It’s unfortunate he’s the only DT being named because there’s a lot of talent there. “Sweat had a pretty good camp. He needs more consistency, same with Alfred. Both are top 10 talents.”

Edge: “Ovie Oghoufo is in the conversation I think. Barryn Sorrell isn’t top 10 but I think he’ll play well this year.”

We had to pause and ask about Ovie, specifically what’s improved? Is he stronger? “I don’t think it’s strength, he’s always been pretty strong. His technique is much better.“ The source went on to say, while Ovie does have good athleticism to pass rush, and has been making plays in practice, he wants to see how disciplined he is on game day.

LB: “Overshown is on the list and Ford is under consideration.”

Concern was expressed here, “is it accurate to say Overshown is still getting by on athleticism while Ford understands the position better?” The reply, “Overshown is still more of an athlete but he’s making a lot of plays and understands his role better. Ford executes on the little things, puts himself in the right place. Ford is pretty athletic too.”

Star: “Jahdae missed a lot of time but if he picks up where he left off he’ll be one of the best players on defense this year.”

CB: “I know Jamison has been up and down, but he’s only been beat a couple of times this month where it looked preventable.”

S: “Jerrin would make the list of 10 most important players because of his leadership on the field.”

The implication, of course, is there is no safety even in top 10 consideration.

The source wanted this to reflect season’s end, not now:

    1. Bijan Robinson

    2. Xavier Worthy

    3. Byron Murphy

    4. DeMarvion Overshown

    5. Jordan Whittington

    6. Quinn Ewers

    7. Roschon Johnson

    8. D’Shawn Jamison

    9. Kelvin Banks

    10. Ja’Tavion Sanders

So, no Jahdae Barron or Ovie Oghoufo. “It‘s tough to leave them off but the coaches feel good about playing some freshman who are really coming on (Ethan Burke and Jaylon Guilbeau).”

We understand there will be some skepticism about talented players who have been inconsistent — namely Overshown and Jamison — but this tidbit was revealing: When a different source was asked about best tackler on the team, “It’s Overshown or Tucker-Dorsey. Overshown is about the only one who can keep Bijan in front of him and Tucker-Dorsey might not have missed a tackle all spring.”

Another point in Overshown’s favor was the coaches holding him out of the last scrimmage despite him being healthy.

One final comment on the conversation. In my opinion, Quinn is either going to be top-3 by the end of the year with Robinson and Worthy, or not on the list at all.

Bet on the former — again, by the end of the season.

Guys shut the fuck up, @bejezuz is gonna go back to IT if you keep up the room and gloom. We don't need a fucking kicker. We can just go for 2 every time cuz we are going to fucking DOMINATE.

Of course we don't have a KICKer! That's what happens when you fire a COACh who's never had a losing season and replace him with 7even Win Steve, who proceeds to shit the bed in historical fashion!  How the hell are we supposed to get champion special teams recruits at KICKer and PUNTer and LoNGsnaPper when we lose 6 games in a row, including to KANSas at HOME!!! I think I'm gonna mortgage my house and take it all to VEGAs and betting it all on the uNDER!!!

    (Is that better?)

I guess what I’m describing is a little better than Tom Herman-level results, and not a raging asshole, so he gets more time.

Yup. That is the most rational position to take.  Better than just hoping Sark's a sure thing and destined to take us to the promise land, for sure.  But also way better than the attitude that we should have done better than Sark after Urban Meyer burned us.  We're in it now, may as well ride it out and hope for the best.

My expectation is that neither extreme scenario happens and he’ll be somewhere in between, 8-4-ish most years, with a breakthrough top-10 year here and there (if he’s around long enough). That sounds ok right now, but we all know it won’t be ok for very long.

So, somewhere between Lane Kiffin and Jimbo Fisher?  The list of proven college coaches that deliver better than what you describe is incredibly short.  Nick Saban (unobtainable), Urban Meyer (eliminated), Kirby Smart (dream on), Dabo Swinney (nearly unobtainable), Brian Kelly (new contract), and Lincoln Riley (new contract).  A coach that can routinely pull 8-4 in the SEC is a great QB away from a title.

I mean, what? I don't even understand what you're attempting to say here.

I'm saying that we signed Sark to a prove-it deal because of the flaws you have identified.  It's priced into the contract. If he hits, he hits.  If he doesn't and we want to upgrade to a more sure thing, we're looking at a ten year contract.

Whether hiring him was a mistake will play out, but everyone can agree that his contract was a hedge.  Texas didn't sign the next Jimbo by choice because Texas didn't like the candidates available at the time.  If we miss on Sark, we're not going to have that choice again.  If Sark can't get it done,  Texas is going to have to roll the dice on nine figure deal on the best coach we can find and live with the consequences for a long time.  And if he does start winning, we're going to have to extend him in to 2033 to keep him.  So where we are right now isn't so bad, really.  It's the next step after this plays out that is a doozy.

Sarkisian has had 2 losing seasons, is 2-2 in bowls, neither win being over a top 10 ranked team in a major bowl, finished ranked (20th) once, has never played for a conference title, and was fired from a top 5 coaching position for being drunk on the sidelines during a game, something only Howard Schnellenberger has accomplished in major college football in the last 42 seasons.

I have met both dudes and have spoken more than in passing to both of them. Sarkisian is an easy guy to root for and I like him. Herman is a despicable piece of shit and I can't stand the guy. Nonetheless, there is zero evidence currently that Sarkisian is a better coach than Tom Herman. Zero as in, you cannot make a credible argument using facts that will support your position, no matter how much you or anyone else wishes to blame prior coaches on their performances.

Michigan State signed Mel Tucker to a 10 year, 95 million dollar contract extension.  His head coaching record is 18-14.  David Shaw makes 9 million a year at Stanford and hasn't won the Pac-12 since 2015.  Every coach in the top 10 in salaries is making at least 8 million per year and is signed for 10 years.  If Sark is a sure thing, we'd be paying him sure thing money.  But I'd rather see how this plays out than pay the next Cristobol 100 million dollars hoping that they can turn the program around and be stuck with them for 6 to 7 years.

literally all that needs to be said about this is that Charlie Strong was fired 11/26/16 and found a new job as a head coach 12/11/26 at USF.

Tom Herman was fired 1/2/21 and still does not have a head coaching job, was an offensive analyst for the Bears and was let go when they brought on a new coach in January 2022. THIS MONTH, EIGHT MONTHS LATER, he just got a job at CBS Sports Network (not regular CBS) as part of a team with Robert Turbin/Christian Fauria (UConn Games) and Meghan McPeak.

He was like 46 when he was fired at Texas, not exactly old. Young enough to get back into the game if you wanted to. But...he hasn't.

It sort of makes you wonder what else was going on, behind the scenes, doesn't it?

Feels like everyone is Bama's rival.  I'd throw Florida and LSU in there as well.

I'm pretty sure if Alabama had it's way they'd probably still pick Auburn as their number one rival, but their other two picks would be Vanderbilt and Kentucky just for a competitive advantage.

Actually, no, it made zero sense.

The most significant point of the entire article is about not expecting every 5 star to be a instant starter.  It sort of works out that you have long development and short development players in the same cycle who are all highly ranked, don't you think?
