  1. Yeah, I kind of expected Wolfgang to just be EVH's kid riding his dad's name to some notoriety/cash, but he's a hell of a multi-instrumentalist and a pretty damn good song writer with his own thing going on.   I mean, he'll pay homage to his dad and drop some killer guitar work that sounds a lot like his old man, but that's not his only or main thing.  I'm glad he's out there making his music and creating his own shadow.

Agree. Like Hank Jr. You can’t deny who you are and who your dad is but you can go make your own thing out of it. Good for him.

  2. I don't think they're "diseased" so much as they were selected for a job they're not good at (based on my 4 hours in this lifetime of doing stuff with concrete.)
For an analogy, suppose you're in a rough bar and there's about to be a knife fight. But instead of getting a ride-or-die knife-fighting friend to help you, you run out to the car, snatch your 3-year-old out of the kiddy-seat, slap an Opinel into his tiny hand, and then dwarf-heave him into the mayhem.
He'd get butchered, and it's not his fault. You gave him an Opinel, which is a fine knife for woodworking, but without even a trace of a hand guard, it was always going to end badly.

The term dwarf-heave does not get used near enough in today’s world

  3. My wife makes a shit load of money and likes expensive stuff.  She also will trade stuff or buy used when she really wants something.  I never worry about her when it comes to stuff like that because she's earned it, and she doesn't just spend to spend.  She saves up money, will trade hair services (we own a salon), trade previous purchases or buy used.

    Wrong thread Elroy

  4. I also saw Pantera at Six Flags in the early 80s, when they were still playing Van Halen and Motley Crue covers, and I maintain that Projects in the Jungle is their magnum opus.

I might have been at that show. Def enjoyed a couple of Bronco Bowl shows during that era.
  5. By my understanding of Hankey (did a land loan with him a few years back) I’d suspect he has the dough. So wouldn’t be surprised if it gets proved up.

  6. Counterpoint:  he made Wildflowers after FMF.  Up through "Highway Companion" he was regularly dropping top shelf shit.  I won't even include FMF, and here's 10 songs that can rival anyone:
    Learning To Fly
    Wildflowers
You Don't Know How It Feels
    Last Dance With Mary Jane
    Walls
    Down South
    Room At the Top
    Scare Easy
    Kings Highway
    Flirtin' With Time

    Also truth.

I think the guy might be the prolific great song hit maker in all of rock and roll.

  7. Also, pre full moon fever Petty is the best Petty

Don’t come around here no more
    Listen to her heart
    The Waiting
    Refugee
    Here comes my girl
    Even the losers
    Don’t do me like that
    Breakdown
    And of course American Girl

Are you kidding me? I’m leaving out a bunch but that’s a HOF career just with those songs.

  8. I can't remember not loving Tom Petty.  When I was in pre-school ('89-'90) Full Moon Fever had just come out, my Dad was wearing it out on the tape deck in the car, and one day in class when the teachers asked us to sing nursery rhymes, I claimed I didn't know any and instead sang "Free Fallin'" which lead to my mom getting a fairly stern scolding from the teacher.
Loving Tom Petty's music has been a part of my very literal entire consciousness, so it's very hard for me to to wrap my head around someone hating it, or even mildly disliking it.

JFC I was a senior on the 40 when Full Moon Fever came out.

My first real intro to Petty was when we got cable in the 8th grade in about 82 and this video was all over MTV

  9. Cheap Trick will always be the answer to "who's the best power pop band ever?"

I feel like Bun E. Carlos has to have some sort of interesting life story that never came out.
