The bigger risks, in my mind at least, are institutional cheating through rev share scams and the newer NIL big swinging dicks not named Texas just continuing to do whatever the fuck they want to do and the NCAA/House clearinghouse police not doing a damned thing about it.

This is exactly my issue...we are back to hoping other people will play by the "rules".  there were some rules before this of course, but now there are LIMITS that go with the rules.  I have no doubt all these fucks who are supposed to enforce the rules/limits will be completely toothless.

It will be up to Texas(and a few others) to start suing entities to keep fair play. Maybe Texas won't care enough to sue because the limits give a modicum of forward looking financial certainty to the University but to be clear, Bama, Aub, SMU, aggy, etc love the fuck out of this.

  2. one of my favorite lines is "I'll find him for 3, but I'll catch him and kill him fer 10".

the chalkboard scene is great.  It is basically Quint describing what will end up happening to him at the end.

    “Genuine nil” lmaooo

yep.  Bama, Georgia, Auburn, LSU, SMU, Oklahoma,Aggy love this.  there are now rules that can be broken to gain an advantage and there is a "clearinghouse" that can be abused, manipulated just like the famous NCAA Clearinghouse on grades/eligibility back in the day that only affected schools playing by the rules.

I'm glad players are getting paid but "welcome back my friends, to the show that never ends. come inside, come inside"

    Define "crazy"

I said this earlier, Cam Newton reportedly got paid $180,000 as a senior to go play 1 year at Auburn. That's a drop in the bucket now.  Will bagmen be able to pay 10x that now under the table?

And I feel like most of the under the table stuff back then was on a player by player basis, not across an entire roster. I think there is a close to zero chance that any school that utilizes under the table bagmen will be able to compete with what Texas/Oregon/Ohio State will pay, legally, across an entire roster.

Also, to your last question: Wisconsin vs Miami

    https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/45552578/wisconsin-sues-miami-tampering-football-transfer

    I suppose that makes sense.

and to the Wisconsin Miami deal, very interesting.  I more thinking suing because they believe they spent beyond the cap or didn't disclose it.  also, suing due to believing that an NIL contract through the clearinghouse wasn't legal and holding up an NIL contract that would affect the school(and player).

It will be interesting.  I think taking this from non contractual stuff(except for the Letter of Intent) to legal binding contractual stuff with a university will be ripe for the litigious society we live in.

  5. OK trying to catch up on this.

so now there is a cap on revenue from university to athletes

there is a "clearinghouse" for NIL contracts

I know this is better than the 80's but it seems we are back to where we were before, where under the table stuff is going to go crazy again.  Ain't nobody got time for clearing houses and caps.

how long before the lawsuits start to expose shenanigans "University of Texas v Ohio State University"?

If you don't like a nutjob being accurately called one then put me on ignore because I am NOT going to let it slide when a complete moron tries to interject themselves into something for other reasons that have zero to do with her ability to play basketball. There are plenty of decent human beings that can be used for quotes about Clark besides Tafoya.

well we can scratch Screamin' A off the quote list then as well...

everyone disappeared. that series against the oil was one of the most frustrating I have ever seen - i can only imagine what it was like on the bench

rantanen will not be expected to carry the team - no player in the modern nhl is capable of that. the oil have proven that. he'll be expected to produce at or better than he did in COL, however, and it remains to be seen if that can happen without Mac and Cale. he's good enough to carry a line, and even with a game by himself (relatively), but he will need skilled players around him to do that. we have them - we just need to make sure the rest are good enough to not get the brakes beat off us every time rantanen's line is off the ice

sure, but he's getting paid not to.  no one said he has to be a one man team but he has to perform as the best player on the Stars. and as I said it remains to be seen how he does as batman vs being robin.

I'm glad we have him because it should, in theory, make us better with a whole offseason and full season.  he did win us the Colorado series so there is that.

  8. The question is, can Rantanen be the man or a full season without having MacKinnon next to him?

I was hoping the crazy burst he had early in the playoffs would at least push him to be the bellcow for the rest or the playoffs(no not expecting hat tricks every game just consistency at a reasonably high level) but to be honest he kinda disappeared.

It's a big bet and add in head coach who hasn't been there before(or not really even close) makes it even bigger.

    we'll see.

I mean I guess on Gulutzan. Two-time failed NHL coach. Probably wasn’t ready in 2011 when the Stars hired him in the midst of the worst time in franchise history (Tom Hicks’ bankruptcy, etc). But he only lasted a couple years with the Flames, made the playoffs once and got swept in R1 and spent the last seven years as an assistant in Edmonton, where he’a been credited with running their lethal PP. Well, that unit has Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, among others.

Nill has won three straight executive of the year awards so I’ll defer to him on this one.

so would this be like if Jerry hired Chan Gailey back after Wade failed?

Bobby and Gerry stated this morning that they feel Texas is prioritizing LOS players with regards to NIL.  It would make sense.  They are saying that Texas is right in there for James Johnson.  If we get Johnson and Guervil that will be an insane haul to go along with Presley when you include Vodney Cleveland.  We are also looking good for two 5 star tackles.  We may very well end up with four 5 star line of scrimmage players.

Why over spend on freshman WRs when you can get guys like Matthew Golden, AD Mitchell, Emmitt Mosley likely that are ready to produce and may not cost you much more.  Hard to find elite LOS guys in the portal.   No point in paying them to sit on the bench.

This also makes a lot of sense as getting and keeping OL is key.  they have to work as a unit moreso than any other position.  DL and Edge, as someone stated, are unicorns.  Big guys that can really move are rare.

It is fairly easy to integrate WR and RB.  They don't need years and offseason weights to bulk up like lineman.

I would prioritize high end corners as D becomes much easier when you can lock down a particular receiver or a side of the field.
