2025 World Series- Dodgers v Blue Jays
The question is if Ohtani is gonna take second anyway and you aren't throwing down. then you have to walk Betts to set up the force anyway.

yep. can walk him and give up one, knowing they have last ups or groove one and maybe give up 3 or 4.

I kinda wanna see the Jays take this with Ohtani pitching the next game. just amp the tension to 11.

I bet if he slides he's out.

but none of that wording says anything about what happens if a catcher is blocking the plate with the ball.

Smoltz asked "if the runner then would be able to run over the catcher" and the booth ump said yes, at that point he can "collide"(not glide) with the catcher. booth ump answer seems to imply you don't have to slide.

probably a bigger gut punch for the Jays with Ohtani going tomorrow.

the booth ump said as long as the runner doesn't deviate from the direct path he didn't have to slide. the wording in the rule book would be interesting to read.

that's not what the booth ump said to Smoltz.

I know that but the booth ump guy said that if he does you can run over his ass pete rose/ray fosse style. my question is how far does the front foot need to move to be consdered "blocking the plate"? to be clear, I think it will likely never happen because guys have now been conditioned to slide or give up. NGL though I would love to see an old school bang bang home plate collision to decide a game...and I played catcher.

apparently I was wrong on that. the problem is you aren't going to know in time unless you are so far up the line that you can actually decide not to slide and you know the catcher is going to block the plate. my question is if the catcher moves his foot from the front corner towards the back of the plate a few inches can you just nail him for that? how far is allowed to be considered still "giving the runner a lane"

yes, I still walk him. I collect baseball cards, mainly 60's and 70's, and never got into all the new "engineered rarity/perfect cuts" stuff but when he went deep the 3rd time in game 4 and pitched 6 inn 10 K's I immediately bought 2 gem mint rookie cards. I'm like this dude is babe ruth when it is literally impossible to be babe ruth in modern baseball. they be never be worth what I paid for them but at least it is something I can pass down to my son. what he is doing is so abnormal it will never be done again, IMO.

seems likely with surgery, but hell, midteer came back in 3 weeks and he's a QB and it was on his throwing hand. get a fucking club on that thing and lets go.
