Plaq Lock actually delivered. Went yesterday for the jazz brunch and had the gumbo. Wife had the eggs sardou. Much better than I expected, great cocktails, and a cool place overall. Will definitely do it again.
The lack of good pubs in Islington is a bit disappointing but it’s still a good day out.

Yep. LMAO at all the Brit & Euro bitches complaining about the early start time. So sad. Getting up early is still better than staying up until 3 or 4 am to watch the race, imho.
It’s annoying but not a big deal for one race. I’ll take the Saturday qualifying and Sunday race in the middle of my afternoon all day every day.

Gotcha. Will put something together tomorrow. We’re going to meet some friends over there on Saturday and having lunch at Plaquemine Lock before. I’m often intrigued but usually disappointed when I try the Cajun/southern/Mexican/bbq scene here. This place supposedly rates well.
Alright, here are some thoughts on Islington. The area is a bit more limited for me as I don't get over that way very often.
Pasha - excellent Turkish (as noted above); also close to the Kings Head pub, which is great. They do a pub theatre in the back that can be boozy fun at times
Trullo - one of the best Italians in London
12:51 - does a great tasting menu at a reasonable price. Really solid place
Ottolenghi - North African, with some Middle East influence. There are a few around London, with varying menus but the Islington one is good.
Sambol Shiak - good, quick cheap eats for laksa
Pig and Butcher - I echo what was said above. One of the best gastropubs in the area, along with Drapers Arms which has a nice beer garden on a sunny day
Smokehouse - have not tried but was considering it initially for this weekend. Then I saw the limited menu with 4 mains - a veg, a pasta, fish and pork loin. Could be good but too many other options in the area for my liking

Anyone want to give me two recos on a nice dinner spot in May? Staying next to Trafalgar Square. Don't mind traveling a little bit but don't want to go across town.
And if you want something more modern European
Clipstone (fitzrovia)
Frenchie (covent garden)
The Portland (fitzrovia)
Cora Pearl (covent garden)
Blandford Comptoir (Marylebone)
Louie (soho) run by a former NOLA Brennan’s chef
Wolseley/Delaunay/Fischer’s - all are part of the Corbin & King group and more brasserie style and do great food and excellent breakfast.

Can give you tons of recs if you tell me more about what type of food you’re looking for. Here’s a start, I think the furthest west for these is Notting Hill. Lots of stuff to the east and north in Shoreditch and Islington but haven’t included below. I would start booking tables now. Stuff fills up quickly.
High End/Michelin Star
Core by Clare Smyth
The Ledbury
Frog by Adam Handling
Sunday Roast
The Blacklock
The Guinea Grill
Hawksmoor
Indian
Gymkhana
Trishna
Jamavar
Dishoom
Roti Chai
Italian
Locanda Locatelli
Osteria Romano
Quintessentially British
St. John
Scott’s (seafood)
J Sheekey (seafood)

I am probably headed over for a work trip in June. Trying to think through when to go that would be most advantageous. Might even try and make it over for two weeks and spend a few days in Geneva (for work). Thinking through it now.
First week of June will be very lively here, possibly more busy than you want. It’s the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee so we have a four day weekend with 2 and 3 June as bank holidays.

Does bear spray really work?
Have heard mixed comments on my trips to Wyoming. Some people have told me the bears can be pretty adept at turning their heads to avoid it. I’ve always carried but never encountered one on foot.

Looking forward to this tomorrow and to hear his story. Yurii was on a visit to London just before things kicked off and has now stayed to raise money, mainly for WCK.

Going to Vegas later this month for the first time since before the pandemic. Eating at Le Cirque, Joel Robuchon, Guy Savoy, Mayfair Supper Club, Jaleo and Julian Serrano Tapas. I will develop gout, and it will be worth it.
Did Guy Savoy and it was just bad. Best part was the wine, 89 Haut Briton.

Been to His signature restaurant in Paris many times, which is amazing, but this replica failed miserably. Le Cirque and Robuchon deliver.

Have had a weekend trip to Vegas next weekend planned for a long while on our way to Disneyland and just now realized it’s going to be during the first weekend of March Madness.
Fuck I’m getting old and my priorities are out of wack.Vegas during the first week of the tourney? I don’t understand your problem.

So got some bad news today. Poor Rini, who has kicked adenocarcinoma twice, is now being dealt a hand that I do not think she is going to beat.
We went into the vet for a quarter sized spot on her nose. After a biopsy, it was determined it was a Stage III Mast Cell tumor, which has spread into her lymph nodes. In addition, the adenocarcinoma is back, and is in the lymph node in her belly, which we caught because of all the imaging we had ordered to diagnose problem one. Oh, and she has a UTI (and is on Clavamox already) just to make things extra fun.
So, we are just trying to keep her quality of life good. It could be 1-2 months with just the Prednisone, or it could be, because we are going to give her Palladia (targeted chemo), longer.
In any case, she has had a hell of a run and it sucks to be in this position with her. I wish there were more I could do, but keeping her comfy and healthy is the best I can do. I might be changing up my Paris plans as she is my priority.
In any case, Rini and I would both appreciate positive thoughts coming our way.
That really sucks, sorry to hear that. I’ve never dealt with a dog on chemo but know a few that have, including my FIL. He regretted it because although it extended the life of his dog a few months, the quality of that life was not improved on chemo. Not saying what you are doing is wrong, just something to be aware of. Only you know what will work best for Rini.

Decided to cancel Budapest and do Marrakech instead. While not overly concerned about the trip, we felt it’s something that we can push back to later in the year. And, I’ve been there 3 or 4 times before but never to Marrakech. C’est la vie.

I've always wondered what would happen to a legend if they just decided to keep playing forever. Jagr is showing they're just trash up a lower level with their insane skills. I wanna see a 50 year old LeBron in the G-League.
He did, his name was Gordie Howe. Retired at 52

I'm trying the Momofuko bo ssam tomorrow night. It's curing now, so I'm crossing fingers that it comes out alright.
Let us know how it comes out and upload some pics. Tried it about a year ago and didn’t quite come out like I hoped so need to try it a second time.

This situation is not akin to Chamberlain appeasing the dictator of a rising world power with global ambitions. Russia is a decaying country with an economy that can't compete in this century. It's conventional military is being used up in this endeavor. Those who prognasticate that this is just the start of his military endeavors have no clue. He has nothing to extend beyond this.
What he does have are nukes. What he also has is an attitude of, "if I'm going down I'm taking the West with me" (his foreign minister threatens nuclear war multiple times a day).
When you have a madman like that in a situation like this, you appease him his victory in Ukraine. Then you work quietly to get him out of power without implicating yourself.
There is no way the conventional Russian military is being used up in this war. There are plenty of Russian troops, tanks, artillery and more importantly aircraft available to move on to the next target. Their ability to successfully deploy their military is certainly in doubt, but the numbers are clearly there.

Buzzrock has been spot on this whole time. No matter how long they hold out and how bloody it gets, it's going to end the same way. Take the long view, live to fight another day. Keep fucking around and this shit will get out of control. It will get out of control and we will all die.
Easy for you to say when it’s not your country under attack and your brothers and sisters being slaughtered.

That's what I said when I moved overseas. Just 2 years then come back. It changed everything, and in the end, didn't really want to go back.
