CDC needs to upgrade their Contact Us staff. I emailed them a couple weeks ago asking about schedule for this weekend in case I could make it out. Never heard back. Maybe I need to use the socials instead of using uncool email.

Happy to see Austin is getting a stop. I'd imagine at Krieg? The players weren't huge fans of those courts last time they were there a few yrs ago. Hopefully, some of the UT Beach girls give it a go. Contenders series is the tier below the main tour. It should be free admission or a very modest fee. The competition level is still good, especially with college beach churning out more talent. You're not going to see a lot of recognizable names unless you know the college field, you know the AVP mid/lower tier, or one of the better teams is using it to auto-qualify for one of the heritage events. Based on schedule, I'd assume Austin would be linked with Huntington Beach and maybe Belmar too? The contender event payouts are small, so the business case usually doesn't entice the better players unless 1) they need points/qualification or 2) they just want to visit that city. I believe the top two finishers for each gender get an auto-qual for the linked heritage/major. I think league qualification only depends on prior year league finishes and major/heritage event finishes. ... this whole AVP League/Heritage/Contender setup has me completely confused, which is not a good sign as I try to follow the sport.

Are they doing 2/4/6 and 1/3/5 Friday and then running it back Saturday? Or three matches Fri and three more Sat?
-
I can't make TCU next weekend, but was thinking about LSU in a few weeks. Wondering how much volleyball will be played as it sounds like two teams onsite? I think I heard Sponcil is on the TCU staff now.

Anyone know what the schedules are for the fall beach pair events in Austin over the next month? I'm assuming it's at the Whitaker courts?
-
Mostly integrity. I believe there's a way to challenge if an opponent is stacking the courts in an advantageous way, but I don't know how that's hashed out with the officials.
-
Haha agree. Serving has been very rough so far. Probably some butterflies. Chloe almost hit the ref on one

Meant to type this up after the late March tournament in Austin, but lost track of time. I'm pretty sure I wrote something like the following… And if I didn't do it here, I'll claim I did somewhere else. There is a progression here: You learn to lose - this means you learn how to learn from your mistakes. Mistakes at all levels - on the court, lineups, coaching prep, off the court, culture You learn to win - this means you're applying those lessons learned, but you don't yet have the focus to win consistently. Therefore, you're above 0.500, but drop games you should win You learn to win consistently - At this point the only things keeping you from winning it all are players maximizing their potential, minor adjustments in strategy, and bad bounces. We saw this evolution with football the past few years. I think Metzger has this team setting foot into the "win consistently" tier. I don't think we're firmly there yet despite the ranking. A few other observations from the [looks at calendar and hangs head] Mar 21-22 weekend. Parmelly has way above average vision/anticipation. Odd to see Ava go from Ct 1 last year to 5 this year, but with all the turnover not shocking. She won't wow you with raw athleticism, but she's pretty fundamentally sound, which works well on Ct 5 where opponents tend to make unforced errors I'm sure I said it last year, but I hope Wright works on her focus because she has a lot of physical talent to unleash if she pulls it all together Coach Akers probably used the word "focus" fifty times that weekend when talking to the girls. Goes back to my point above about winning consistently. Charles has a pretty good left hand Maybe it's just me and who I have/haven't watched, but have the 1s across the country regressed this year? Asking because I'm not recalling the Kraft/VanWinkle/Maple types from recent years getting into AVP main draws I'm curious how our 1s and 2s fare against one another in practice. I'd guess they are about even? There can't be many things in sports fandom more frustrating than sitting at Ct 2, watching your team lose a point, turn to Ct 1, seeing your team lose that point, and then turning to Ct 3 and seeing your team lose a point there all in about 20 seconds. Hell, I probably saw that across five Cts the first season and I blocked it from my memory I really like the three Ct setup instead of 5. You can see more as a fan. I'm sure the coaches prefer it as they can be present at all matches. The tension builds much more with two waves of matches.. Even if one team wins 4s and 5s, you can get compelling comeback potential in the second wave. The first year, I traveled thousands of miles to watch them go 1-12. The next year, I traveled thousands of miles to watch them go 7-8. This year, I traveled thousands of miles and watched them beat the #13, #11, and #2 ranked teams all in the same weekend. On my way to Gulf Shores now to see how we cap off this season 🤘 Anyone else going?

Anyone at Whitaker this afternoon or tomorrow? I plan to be there both days.
-
Anyone go out to see the scrimmage? Any lineup insights? Looks like Hashman/Robertson and Presley/Ogden, which were pairings we saw often last yr. Curious who they had running with Devin.

During the AVP season, yes. At the end of 2024, Toni and Molly played a few international tournaments together: https://en.volleyballworld.com/beachvolleyball/competitions/beach-pro-tour/news/third-time-is-a-charm-for-shaw-toni

Heard the injury was pickleball related? Big opportunity for Molly. She's been stuck in the middle of the AVP main draw crowd for yrs. I think she's been playing with Toni Rodriguez lately and they had some good results, which may have caught Kelly's attention. Suspect Kelly's partner search was limited with the other littles figuring or being told this was temporary until Sara gets back.

Well, they announced the 2025 season... and of course the AVP website is not updated after the news being out several days. They wonder why they can't make money... 🤦♂️ Way too heavy on the league events in my opinion. I get that they decided the tournament format isn't financially viable, but I really struggle to see how the league events are. After going to a handful of tournaments every year, I haven't been to a single league event, so I can't tell what revenue they're generating there. Can't help but think there are ways to make the tournaments work. From Sandcast, it sounds like they bumped up the payouts for the league, so there should be decent competition to get into that. But those who don't get into the league are polishing resumes? Are we going to see higher level talent at the contender events?

Schedule dropped. Finally getting a full length schedule and they aren't skimping on SoS. We play every team that finished top 12 last season at least once and get multiple twice. https://texaslonghorns.com/sports/wbvball/schedule/2025

Continuing to piece our schedule together as other teams post their schedules. Thanks to Shadow for getting the ball rolling. Mar 7-8 Fort Worth TCU, FSU, FAU, & Boise Mar 21-22 Austin LSU, ASU, Georgia State Apr 4-5 Tallahassee FSU, LSU, USCe, USF, FAU Apr 25-26 Baton Rouge CCSA Championship May 2-4 Huntington Beach NCAA Championship

Noted. I'll try to swing out there for it. Hopefully our schedule is released soon. Last year, we tried piecing it together as other schools released their schedules.

I've been delinquent in my reporting here. I was out at MBO and Chicago. Ran into Molly at MBO. They didn't get out of the qualifiers on Thurs. She said she was moving "out here" (presumably South Bay) and looking to give the beach volleyball circuit a go. I saw on http://www.bvbinfo.com/player.asp?ID=23586 that she made $250 in some FIVB events in China. Hopefully we see her getting into a few main draws going forward. I'd also love to see some of the current UT Beach girls out there accumulating tour points. Other takeaways: - you guys already mentioned it. The city franchise approach is contrived. Beach volleyball doesn't lend itself to that approach. If I thought about it, I could probably come up with more, but off the top of my head, here are my problems with it: It's awkward to have only four people representing a city. It's possible we're just accustomed to at least a dozen people (e.g. NBA, MLB, NHL, NFL, etc) for a given city and there's nothing inherently wrong with only four. If the men's team wins and the women's team loses, is it a draw for the city? How do standings work? I'm sure they explain this, but the fact that I don't know and don't have a strong desire to look into it should be an indication that this concept is in trouble Indoor volleyball probably has a chance with city franchises because they play best of 5 sets, you get 2-3 hours of entertainment, the season is long enough to build a relationship with fans, and you have a clear winner/loser. With this concept, you have one or two events per city, you get 1.5-2 hrs of competition, and they may split? The team names seem like a product of someone who fed the following into a GenAI tool: "Give me team nicknames for [insert cities] where only one or two of the nicknames have some semblance of a meaningful tie to the city/region, give me lots of alliteration, and all of the nicknames must be so generic that there is no way any of them can be perceived as offensive to anyone. Hint: check out American Gladiators for name ideas." - I'm interested in some of the physique trends year over year. I noted last year that there were a handful that really hit the weights and bulked up. This year, those same people who were bulked up last year came back to normal and several others looked notably lighter. Scoles was one who looked really physically strong last year, but I was questioning the wisdom of the added weight and pounding on her joints as a blocker after she had leg injuries. She still looks strong, but probably at a better weight for longevity now. Bourne looked lighter. I barely recognized Terese Cannon as she lost quite a bit of weight - she wasn't heavy to begin with and she isn't "skinny" now, but a noticeable change. Lighter seems to be the way to go in 2024. - Took a walk out on the pier to find Coach's plaques. Looking forward to him bringing beach volleyball hardware to Austin.

Thanks. Haven't been able to keep up with the Olympics yet - aside from seeing some of the scores. I'll try to follow more closely the next few wks.

I don't know the team dynamics well enough to know if that is based on their identification of the lynchpin / must-win matches, which coaches have the best bead on certain players/teams, etc. At LBSU, I recall the coaches moving around more between duals and even across matches within a dual.
