I'm kicking around the idea of getting my son a FJ for his first car. My first car was a '91 4Runner and I had an '03 Taco as well. I drove the 4Runner until it had 200k miles and started to have engine issues/lose compression. I drove the Taco for 130k and only got rid of it because we started having kids and I needed more space.

My question is, how many miles are too many when looking at a used 'Yota? The FJs have really held their value and there isn't that much savings for one with 200k vs. 125k miles.

    Opinions?

FJ is a good first car. It's slow so it should keep the speeding in check, and it's amazingly safe. One FJ got rammed by multiple semi trucks going around 60 during the ice storm a few years ago in FW and the driver lived.

I bought mine with 125k miles, have put 13k on in a year and a half and have only had one issue I had to take to the shop, a transfer case leak that cost $2k to fix. There's several posts in the FJ forum about guys not having it in the shop till 200k+ miles. The ones I looked at with >200k miles all seemed worn out compared to the one I got.

The big thing you need to watch out for is rust. Toyota had some issues around that time with the coating on the frames. The 2010 I bought was from Canada and was rusting out. I had just totaled my 4runner and hurt my back so I didn't crawl under it when I bought it. I crawled completely under my 2012. Dealer thought I was nuts when he saw me completely under the truck crawling around. I took the 2010 to a body shop to get the frame/underside sand blasted and repainted and he crawled under and 5 seconds later came back up and said "sell it now".  I bought it for $21k, drove it for a year and a half and sold it for $18 to a dealer. I saw it listed at a used car lot in Phoenix for $25k. I bought the 2012 for $28k, but it had a few thousand in addons including bumpers, roof rack and a winch.

Later year models have more features and off road options than the older ones. If I totaled this one I'd look for a 2012-2014 with around 100k miles. If I was buying one for my kid I'd probably be ok with a 2007-2010 with 200k on it. Should run fine and have a once a year or so starter/alternator/fluid leak that will set you back $500-$1000.

  2. Played Big O tournament at Lodge on Monday. With 16 people left I had 800k in chips out of 3.7 million, no one else had $200k. Don’t win a hand for an hour, enter the final table with about 250k.
Limp along for a bit, one guy refuses to chop and we’re down to 5 when I go on a run and end up knocking two out and we’re down to 3 and a have 3.3 million of the chips.
I end up losing 5 all ins in a row, getting scooped each time and each time I was a huge favorite after the flop. I have AA234, villain KJ985, flop J65, two bricks. Next hand I have J6432 he has AAKT8, flop J65, turn 5, river brick.
End up chopping and I got $1334.

Went to bullets to play big o on Thursday and got slaughtered.

came to TCH for the plo tournament, was chip leader with 4 left and we chopped and I won $730.

    playing plo bomb pot now

Oh I agree. Just wonder how many of these people will end up serial killers after the war.

At the end of WW2 the same thought occurred to many people. The Roosevelt's wife was campaigning for camps to hold all the returning military to be quarantined for a while before letting them back into the country. Soldiers came home and there was no murder or crime spike.

  4. Guy sits down with $500. I know I’ve played with him and kinda remember him as a dick.
    My hand is 2456

    Flop is 223 and KQ3

I check, he pots for $45, only I call.
turns are 6’s on both boards. I check, he bets $100, I call.
rivers are 2 and 7 giving me quad 2s and the nut straight

I pot, he repots, I call. He had KQQ7

he stands up, says “I guess I’m not as good at this game as I thought, how the fuck do you call $100 with the lowest boat possible?” leaves to go play hold em.

whole table was laughing at him, apparently no one likes him

  5. As a follow up to previous story, had turned $1000 into $300. Favorite hand during the downturn

I have AA2s3s6. I raise preflop and get 2 callers. Flop is 4s5s7.
I’m trying to figure out how to get them all in and they pot and repot ahead of me. I repot and all three of us are all in.
turn is a 3, river is 6s, giving me straight flush and nut low.
First guy turns over A2 and second guy turns over 7s8s.
So nut low, straight flush gets me 1/4 of the pot.

So it’s about 2am and the game is breaking. The hold em game going on happened to break right before us and 3 guys, 2 of which I know are complete idiots say they will play big o.  The other guy who came over turned out to be really bad at big o but had a horseshoe up his ass and ran $500 up to $3000.
Favorite hand I had with him I had AAJT3. He raises $30 pre flop and 2 of us call. Flop AJ3. Other guy in hand pots, idiot raises to $200 and we both call. Turn is a 5, they pot and repot and I’m out. What did he raise preflop with? K9742. Other guy had 42 too and they chop.

we end up playing till 7am and I turned the $300 into $999, so I ended up playing 13 hours and lost $1.

played the big o tournament at the lodge Monday and finished 4th and won $644.

played the double board bomb pot tournament Thursday and fired two bullets and was out just after the first break. Drove down to bullets for the big o and ended up winning $250

came up to TCH for the Friday PLO. First buy in didn’t win one hand out right, just chopped one hand. Chip leader had $200k and I had around $20k. He raised preflop and I called with KdQsJd9s.
flop is Td9dTc. I jam and he instantly calls and shows T9. Turn is a small card and I stand up assuming I’m drawing dead. Turns out I wasn’t as the Qd hits giving me a straight flush.
Got going hitting straights and flushes and ran it up to 150k. Other big stack kept knocking people out. We got down to two and first payed $1275 and second $850. He had around $400k and I had $150k in chips. I offered him $1125 and me $1000 and he took it.

now playing hold em waiting to degen it up playing at the plo bomb pot table

  6. I have an FJ cruiser. I love it and will probably never get rid of it. But it's not great for long highway drives.

I want to get something 10-20 years old that's sporty and would be good for the highway. Would like to keep it under $10k. Stick shift would be nice. Poking around craigslist and autotrader I've seen some challengers, 350/370z's, a few lexus' and a few mercedes that might fit the bill.

I don't want a 40 year old car but is there something like a Tarus SHO or Grand National from the mid 2000's? Type-R? May fall back to an E63 AMG like I had before, but any ideas on something I should look for?

    Maybe something like this:
