there is now a 21-minute hop on the flight plan from columbus to suburban cincy.   very interesting.

tomorrow's flight plan looks like this:

    AGC 1430 - 1501 CMH (90-minute layover in CMH)

    CMH 1600 - 1621 LUK (old inner-city airport 2mi E downtown cincinnati)

the next stop on the flightplan is the moneyshot

I don't think there is any doubt Greinke is as close to a 1st ballot HOF guy currently in the MLB.

I think Greinke gets in, but not sure he is first ballot. Might depend on who else is on the ballot. 208 wins (and counting) will keep him off some of the old timer's ballots in the first year. JV likely has a better shot at making it in on first ballot.

The surest first ballot guy currently on a roster, imo, is Brad's friend Albert.

  3. I've been lurking this thread since before Covid. My son is turning 7 in December. He played t-ball as a 5 year year old with mostly 6 year olds. He wasn't the best player on the team, but was solidly the 3rd best. I was one of the assistant coaches, and we had a great time, except for the fact that his team was just abysmally terrible (and the other teams constantly violated the rules in place that were to ensure fair competition). He's always been hyper competitive, so being the Bad News Bears was very discouraging for him, so he wanted to take some time off from playing baseball again and then Covid happened.
Putting aside the reemerging Covid situation, he really wants to start playing again, and registration for spring coach pitch is around the corner. We're in Houston zoned to both Spring Branch -- Memorial Sports Association and Spring Branch Little League. Does anyone have experiences/opinions regarding the pros/cons between the two? Part of the difference appears to be a USSSA vs USA Baseball situation, which I know nearly nothing about other than the bat spec issue.
SBMSA and it is not even close. When my kids were involved in SBMSA, SBLL had about four teams in each age group. I'm surprised they are still around. POLL and MALL were the main LL draws back then.

  4. Well my politicking didn't work. We were rained out tonight and now play semifinal tomorrow night and final Friday night. So if we win then we face the #2 seed who has had 2 days of rest to reset their pitching while we have no days off. Our reward for winning the regular season is the worst possible playoff draw. Lovely.
    Well?
  5. from Ole Miss 24/7:

During Monday’s practice, Ole Miss tight end Damarcus Thomas suffered a serious injury and had to be airlifted to a hospital. Now, the school has updated Thomas’ status with some good news.

After being unresponsive on the field following his injury, Thomas has regained movement in his extremities. In a statement, Ole Miss said that doctors are encouraged thus far.

"Following the injury at practice this morning, Damarcus traveled by ambulance to Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford and was airlifted from there to Memphis Regional Medical Center," Ole Miss Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Pat Jernigan said in a statement. "Evaluations have all be positive to this point. He has regained movement in all his extremities, and the physicians are optimistic."

Per the Astros website, Springer, Brantley, Peacock, and Reddick have all opted for free agency.  They are no longer listed on the 40-man roster, though Osuna still is.

Did any of them have player options in their contracts? I thought all of their contracts were over and thus they became FA after the World Series ended. Regardless, MLB is now in the window for teams and players to exercise options. Nov 2 (Monday) is the deadline for QOs to be extended. QO is $18.9 M this year - so Springer gets one for certain. Question is whether Uncle Mike gets one. I'd offer it, as the downside is that you get him for one year at $18.9 M, which is a $2.9 M bump from this year. That might be a slight overpayment, but it sets 2/3 of the OF for 2021, and gets you to the point where the real labor shit storm begins.

Agreed. 4 is the real deal most of the time. It is a shame he is saddled with the Texans' D and their cap/draft situation (i.e. furked). Ownership/management sucks, and BOB's actions as GM will set the franchise back for a long time.

That's what I would have done, but I don't have a huge problem going for two. I get it.

Romeo has been coaching for 100 years. He knows the D is a shitshow. He knew the highest probability of winning was to let 4 make a play on the 2-pt try and go up nine. Titans punted on opening drive and that was it. The D wasn't stopping the Titans. Only reason the Texans were in it was JJ's strip sack and the Titans' kicking issues.

    Cross posting from another thread

If you are running a multi-million dollar company, you do not go get your next CEO at some family-owned business; you go get the best available person who has skins on the wall. That said, in compiling the list below, it looks like Saban and Dabo are the only MNC coaches to win championships across multiple recruiting periods. Urban and Pete Carroll are closer to Saban and Dabo than they are to Coach O, Chizik, Jimbo, and Mack (i.e. those who owe their MNCs to catching lightning in a bottle).

That said, here are the coaches with National Championships who are still coaching and/or age appropriate:

Saban - Texas took a shot and screwed it up apparently, so he'd likely say he is not interested (despite his wife attending open houses on Lake Austin); age becoming an issue

Dabo - young enough for Texas to be interested; why move if you are him ... unless it is to Bama

Coach O - found lightening in a bottle in 2019 with grad transfer QB and young passing game guru; will recruit well (and shadily)

Mad Hatter - sort of backed into his MNC with a two-loss team

Chizik - not unless he's bringing Cam 2.0

Jimbo - not unless he's bringing Jameis 2.0

Mack - retired on active duty; got run off (but would take if he's bringing VY 2.0 :))

Pete Carroll - has a better job

Big Game Bob - walked away and has expressed no interest in other jobs; might have health issues

Urban - likely to win big; will recruit well (and perhaps shadily); would likely lock down the State in recruiting; might have health issues

Bottom-line, even without considering the finances of buy-outs, Covid-related revenue drops, etc., etc., Texas is kind of fucked; either have to sell the University's soul a little bit and roll with Urban or roll dice and hope that you catch lightning in a bottle and/or find the next great coach among the up-and-comers.

And as Liquor and Poker stated on the other thread, the BMDs know Tom is owed a lot of money in a financial crisis period and are likely not to want to spend the money it will take to buy him out and get someone new ... so he is likely back in 2021 (unfortunately).

Majority of the time these kids have THC in the vape pen, which results in a "drugs on campus" type of charge.  It's not expulsion, it's alternative school.  About 50% of the time parents pull their kids out of school to avoid the punishment.  Public schools have an agreement where punishments carry over from district to district, so his only option if he's trying to avoid punishment is to go to a private school.

I think State law mandates the "carry over"

With many private schools not playing, not sure he has many options at this point.
