Hopefully we can use one of these guys to get MadBum or Stroman

    Agreed.

12 healthy position players looks like this:

    Chirinos

    Stubbs OR Stassi

    Yuli

    Altuve

    CC

    Bregs

    Diaz

    Uncle Mike

    Springer

    Jake

    Reddick

    Kemp OR Straw

If they go with 13, Yordon has to be no. 13.

i hope scherzer is on the block, but i don't think that's the move.

bum just seems so perfect - slot a lefty in there with jv and cole.  we won't have to give up much, and he's the type to elevate his game for the postseason - much like verlander's game changed (or reverted back to form) when he got to h.  put a deal together with fisher and a couple top 15 types.  idiots on sirius mlb radio are like, "i would ask for alvarez and then see where the conversation goes."  good luck with that.

miley is an ideal sp4, as he'll keep you in games, but you never need more than 5 innings from him, considering that rotation allows for mchugh/james/peacock to be in the pen, all as multiple inning guys.

i personally prefer cole to scherzer if we're investing that type of money in a guy for the next several years.  max will be 35 just after the asb.  i know we're a little spoiled growing up with nolan, then seeing clemens (cough, steroids), and now jv, but you can't depend on guys on the wrong side of 35 to stay that dominant.

cole is 28, and if he wants to win, i would think he'd like to stay.  i'm not saying he'll take a "hometown discount" but if we want him, we can make it happen.  give him 5 years, maybe overpay a little to avoid the 6-7 year deal (corbin got 6).  that extends our window, and keeps jv and cole together to welcome in the new blood.  sidenote - the al west is a shitshow and doesn't look to be getting any better anytime soon.  staying with the astros basically guarantees you an excellent shot at the 1-2 seed in the al.  avoiding the wild card seems appealing.

if we add an sp3, i'm not completely sure we need to add another rp (which is something i've been banging the drum for).  let smith come back, then see who's who between harris, devo, smith, rondon.  probably only 3 make the postseason roster, along with 2-3 of the "multi-inning" guys i referred to earlier (and obviously pressly and osuna).  we've come a long way since the gerg days.

i would say add a bat, but until i know what's going on with our injuries, it's tough to say where one would fit in.  forcibly remove tyler white from the building, and i like what i see.  a lot.

Plus MadBum is an asset for the games in the NL park come Oct ...

Any of you Houston area guys played at Katy National Park before? How is it? We've usually played at Baseball USA (good) or West Little York (crappy). Never played in Katy but we will on Saturday.

There were two "Katy" complexes when mine played. Katy Pony, north of Clay, and Katy LL, south of Clay. The ones north of Clay were hit or miss on field quality. Lots of lips, etc. on the larger fields (were the older, less enthusiastic dads coached). The Katy LL fields were usually in good shape. Both complexes were better than W. Little York and Doss Park. lol

  6. My kids grew up in SBMSA and went to MHS. If either son wants to play at MHS, they likely will need to migrate to select ball at some point. I cannot think of one player on MHS varsity over the past six years who played significant innings who didn't play select from at least 12u on.

That said, don't get caught up in Memorial area drama of forming a select team as soon as possible. With BBUSA in the backyard, it is just too tempting for those with resources to jump to select for the wrong or misguided reasons.

9u is a beating wherever they play, so my advice is to stay in SBMSA one more year and ride that year out close by, with friends, and without the extra cost.

That said, I think Katy PONY and CFSA offer Sunday rec leagues (DH each week) in the fall. It can be a decent way to spend time playing in the fall.

Also as an FYI, 9u in the fall and all the learning it entails sort of precludes football.

I assumed they fired Applewhite because Tilman had already committed big dollars to Dana or someone else.  24 hours later and not one leak about a coach already lined up leads me to believe they fired Applewhite without a plan in place to replace him - thats fucking nuts.

Dana's buyout goes down on 1.1.19. If Dana is not announced by 1.2.19, then I agree it is nuts.

Someone explain the neutral zone infraction. I thought the infraction had to cause the offense to immediately jump, not stand there and point.

here's the explanation ... Clowney is not disciplined enough or not smart enough to stay onside. Luck has gotten him five times this season. That "play" is likely in the Colts' playbook as "Clowney Special."

Based on what is out in public now, this is what likely happened:

    • Coach O fires Dameyune Craig
    • Aggy runs out of time
    • Refs put one second back on clock
    • Aggy wins a game (with the benefit of multiple close calls)
    • Coach Craig decides to talk shit (straight out of How To Be Aggy 101)
    • Cole N. Fisher (the N is for Nepotism) tries to reel Craig in (undoubtedly so he can brag to Uncle Jimbo about it)
    • LSU Coach Kragthorpe tells Craig to pipe down, get back to his sideline, have some class, etc.
    • Fisher stiff arms Kragthorpe as Fisher is ushering Craig away
    • Unbeknownst to Fisher, Kragthorpe has a neurological pacemaker, which acts up as a result of Fisher's shove
    • Kevin Faulk sees or hears about it and gets pissed
    • Faulk and Fisher thrown down
    • Faulk and Fisher are separated and Fisher goes and tells Uncle Jimbo
    • Uncle Jimbo denies knowing anything in post-game press conference
    • Aggy Athletic Dept. denies knowing anything about fight, Cole Fisher, Jimbo's family tree, etc. on Sunday
    • Cajuns are riled up

Those who never saw JR pitch will never really know what they missed. For a little while there, he almost made Nolan look mortal. Beast mode to the nth degree.

When the Stros set up their rotation to be J.R., Niekro, and Nolan, it was the tits.

Actually Cumberland was a "New Man" still - IE, still in initiation, this was from their statement from the group:

I know things change, but i saw pictures of him in "old man" garb, not "new man" garb, and thus made the assumption.

There are a lot of ways this could be on the organization. First, this was an organization event, so just about everything happening is on their watch. Second, if they were hazing these guys, and said events included keep them up all night and they have them drive back to Austin, that's putting them in a dangerous situation.

Your points are right to a point. If the org let sleep-deprived and possibly drunk men drive home, then there is potential liability for the org.

  12. 2 minutes ago, crash_davis said:

what happens if/when the parents sue the org?  does the group have a legal fund?

I suspect that the org has some type of insurance. But what is the theory by which the org is responsible? Cumberland was already a member and wasn't getting hazed (if hazing was even going on). And regardless, if there was hazing, it did not contribute to the accident. The org may have provided Cumberland with alcohol while under age, but there are no indications that his BAC, if any, contributed to his death, i.e. he wasn't driving and he didn't pass out. The report is that the driver fell asleep and crashed. Cumberland was the only one in the car not wearing a seat belt and was ejected. I think the only way you pop the org is by arguing that the org provided alcohol to the driver and that his BAC was over the limit and that caused him to fall asleep. Social host liability theory. But the defense (whether it be the org's defense or the driver's defense) is going to argue that Cumberland was contributorily negligent in not using his belt.

I didn't realize the Texans and Patriots are both 7-3. Texans have an outside chance of getting a bye. Their remaining 6 games are against teams that are a combined 23-36-1. With no team actually having a winning record. The Colts game at home is probably the most difficult game remaining, and you can never underestimate how bad BOB is at calling plays inside the RZ. The Texans should be no worse than 12-4 going into the playoffs, and really should run the table and get to 13-3.

I love the Texans as much as anyone, but do you really think they have a chance to finish ahead of two of the following: Chiefs, Steelers, Pats?

Remove Baylor and insert TCU. And outside of the business school, A&M is probably better holistically than UTD but you'd be splitting hairs at that point.

You could also make the case for the LA colleges like Trinity and Southwestern.

Baylor is ahead of TCU in USNWR.

Trinity and Southwestern are not ranked nationally but are extremely high in the regional rankings, so I agree that we should put them ahead of Blinn St. College
