  1. I understand. I guess growing up we were an oddity. I went to a school in Spring Branch ISD and every school in the district was in 21 5A (I think 17 5A back in the day) so the school district and the UIL district were one and the same.
You know what, I may be wrong. We played Hastings and Elsik and I'm not sure if they were in Spring Branch School District. But, every school in Spring Branch ISD was 5A and in the same UIL district.
The other thing to remember is that the UIL reclassifies and realigns districts every two years. So district alignments change often, especially in the Houston area with schools in school districts that do not have enough schools on their own to make up a UIL district. In the last 15 years, SBISD schools have been with Alief ISD, Katy ISD, Aldine ISD, Klein ISD, and CyFair ISD. When Stratford and Spring Woods were down in 5A, they we with Waller, Brenham, and other schools on 290 corridor.

thanks for the clarification. I'll strife to do better next time.  :)

But I think we both agree that this scenario just underscores the incompetence of the Texans organization.

    This team deserves better.

Agreed that the Texans are inept ... from the top down Bob/Cal, Smith/Gaines, BoB. It is the city that deserves better. Cal should buy Crane and Luhnow lunch and get some good advice. P.S. Fuck Bud for moving the Oilers.

The Texans couldn't franchise him b/c Clowney got wind that he was to be traded to Miami so he refused to sign the contract, iirc. Maybe the Texans wanted to franchise tag him (which I think is true) but they fucked it up. Clowney called their bluff and basically threatened to sit out a year. The Texans panicked and sent him packing to Seattle for a pittance. PLUS, the Texans are paying about 7 million of his salary this year. Yeah Texans!

The Texans DID place franchise tag on Clowney.

The Texans and Clowney could not agree on a long-term deal, in part because Texans tagged him/negotiated as if he was an OLB, and Clowney considered himself a DE -- the franchise amount is about $1.5 million/season higher for DE and DE salary's are higher.

At that point, Clowney's options were a) sign the franchise tender and be under contract to Houston, or b) hold out/not play/not be paid.

Clowney learned that the Texans were considering trading him after he signed tender, so he didn't sign. That left Clowney will all of the leverage, as the Texans had a $15+ million asset they couldn't not play or trade.

With Clowney (and his "approved" teams) holding the cards, Texans got taken in the subsequent trade.

Additionally, there are reports that Clowney approached Texans about signing tender if Texans agreed not to trade him in 2019, but Texans said no. If true, that shows the level of strive between Clowney and BoB ....

Based on data from baseballsavant.com, Miley's velocity is higher in the last two games compared to all his previous starts in MMP this year.  Spin rate is also slightly higher on all his pitches except the 2-seamer.

It could be due to smaller sample size when looking at just two games, but the pitch location charts show his pitches coming slightly more inside to RHB than before these two debacles.  Release points seem to be about the same.  Since release points and velocity / spin are in line with previous performances it does not appear to be a physical issue.

I get it that he's not a 3.00 ERA guy and no one thought that would hold up, but these last two performances have been more than just a reversion to the mean.

Chandler Rome has an article that suggests a) Miley is a "pitch-to-contact" guy (so he is not going to blow batters away like JV and Cole); b) opponents are making an effort to stay inside the ball and go the opposite way.

    First inning last night was

88mph single to RF by RHH

93mph out to CF by RHH

    Walk

72mph single to RF by RHH

93mph single to CF by RHH

102 mph single to RCF by RHH

77mph single to RF by RHH

102 mph single to LF by RHH

90 mph single to RF by RHH

That is one pulled ball and only two balls struck in excess of 100. Miley and Strom need to adjust.

I'd be shocked if they were.  If they both win their districts, they'd play in the region semis, like they did last season.

You are correct. My bad. We will call it the de facto Region 3 final instead, as both should coast to winning their districts.

  6. Katy was better conditioned, better prepared, more motivated, and more concerned with winning the game. North Shore looked like they'd rather be somewhere else. Good win for Katy, but means little. The game that matters is the Region 3 final in December. I'd be shocked if these two teams aren't in that game.

No matter his status in the NFL I am sure he is still proud to be a card carrying member of the SHS Mafia.

Rather be dead than red and all that.

Luck was 1-2 vs MHS. Go Stangs.

He also solved the problem for next season, when it's likely we lose Miley and Cole.

Verlander, Greinke, and Sanchez is still a pretty good trio, if they can fix Sanchez.

I think Miley likes it here (i.e. close to Louisiana). He might give a discount to stay.

Kemp doesn't solve anything with the 40 man. It's at 39 right now... He is being DFA'd for Correa who will take his spot because Correa was on the 60 day IL.

At 39 now. If they had elected to option Straw and activate Correa, they go to 40 on 40-man, leaving no room for a player acquired via trade unless they trade/DFA someone on the 40. By DFA'ing Kemp, the 40-man stays at 39, and they can add a player acquired via trade without having trade or DFA someone on the 40 (e.g. JBB and Beer for ???).

At one point, I thought optioning Straw, even for just one week, might help in dealing with issues leading up to 7/31, but as others have said, DFA'ing Kemp actually gives Astros more leverage in trading him and helps with the 40-man issues, should a trade take place

No. Diaz never left the 40 man roster. Tomorrow we’ll be at 39, leaving a spot open for a trade addition.

Right. Optioning Straw, even if just to buy time, doesn't solve the 40-man issue. The DFA of Kemp is some indication that the teams expects to make a trade.

  11. What's the roster move with Carlos coming back?

    DFA Kemp?

    Send Straw down?

Send Straw down until trade deadline, in order to keep as much flexibility with regard to trading Kemp (if Kemp is not traded by then, DFA him then)?

They also had to pay $2 million as a fine for overspending during that international period

Well that just increases the Dodgers niceness ... gave Yordan $2 million; gave up their use of said $2 million on someone they (as opposed to the Stros) wanted; and paid a fine for doing so, all just to help the Stros.

Either the Dodgers are run by Aggy or the Arlington writer is Aggy or dense (or both, although that is redundant).

Texas Rangers Athletic writer insinuating the Dodgers drafted Yordan for the Astros because the Stros couldn't afford him

So, Dodgers give Yordan $2 million and forego their use of said $2 million on someone they (as opposed to the Stros) want ... just to help the Stros. What a bunch of nice guys.

Additionally, the article a few weeks back about how Yordan got to Houston indicated that the Dodgers were surprised Houston wanted Yordan for Fields; LA thought Houston wanted "the other Alvarez." That would indicated no prior plan.

Conclusion: Ranger writer has a hurt pee-pee.

A new starting pitcher wouldn’t be replacing Peacock

No, but it would bump him down to #5 and he'd be the one being skipped over the next week and the one going to the pen or off the roster in the playoffs.

We're moving closer to joining a team. It will be a newly formed 9U team made up of kids from our school and a few others nearby. The head coach is not a dad; he's an assistant coach at a nearby private school that several dads have been taking their kid to private lessons to for the past few years. He intends for it to be a AA team initially.

We will roster bat and no kid will sit for consecutive innings. He wants everyone to have an infield and an outfield position.

The team will be formally selected in July with games starting in the Fall. We'll do two practices per week with a double header every other Sunday in the Fall. We'll play weekend tournaments every other week in the Spring.

Still in the learning phase, but I like what I hear so far. The things I like the most are: 1) not having a dad for the head coach; 2) having some friends from our school on the team; 3) it being located near where we live; 4) a lighter Fall schedule that will allow for participation in other sports; and 5) every kid will get fairly even playing time.

Thoughts from those with experience? What questions should I be asking?

Echo that you want to ask about long-term plans.

Also, reconsider the "no one sits back to back innings" rule as it relates to pitchers. At 9u, the team will likely need at least three pitchers per game. The plan should be 2-2-2 (best for pool games) or 3-3 with one on stand-by if one can't get through an inning (for bracket games).

Be up front with kids and parents: "We will have three kids ready to pitch each game. Those kids will only pitch and bat, and will not play in the field absent an injury." This helps with pitching -- pitchers can focus, stay rested, get loose, etc. It also helps with rotation, because with a 12-man roster, you now have 9 players to rotate among 8 positions. It also helps with parent expectations: "Sally, you know the reason Johnny hasn't played in the field is that they are resting him to pitch later in the game."

This is easy to implement during pool games; just takes some thought and planning. Becomes a bit harder during bracket games.
