He's experimented with a 6-2 in past seasons. And this year he doesn't even try it when it's clear to most that it could benefit the team. Strange.

We don’t have enough subs to run a 6-2 I don’t think. I still wish he would try a 5-2, but Logan would have to stay in and play back row.

who do y’all think gets the start on Wednesday? I think Elliot will go back to Shook. I like Gabriel better, but I dont know if he is at the point of completely benching Shook.

  2. Just watched the replay and here is what I noticed:

setting - IMO for 1.5 sets Shook was actually setting quite well by getting hands on passes she would typically bump set and spreading out her sets nicely. Obviously, Shooks accuracy went downhill and the Texas hitting pct. while she was in was .162 vs. Gabriel’s .452 (at 17-13 in the 3rd). Unfortunately I still think Gabriel is too short to run a 5-1, and we will get completely burned against taller/better/quicker outsides and middles (i.e. Stanford, Nebraska, Minnesota, Florida, etc.) + our defense is not good enough to pick up the slack.

I have always really liked the rotation where Yazzie stays outside and Eggleston hits from the right side, we seem to score a lot of side out points with this strategy.

Also, for once I feel like missed serves were not a major part of the outcome tonight.

I’m not used to seeing Texas volleyball looking like this past the halfway point of the season

Ehhh if IIRC, there were quite a few road games last year that we should have lost but barely won in 5. Even late in the season

One thing that was interesting.  When Gabriel was settting, the tipping virtually disappeared.  When Shook came back in, it magically reappeared.

Just for fun, I kinda want to see what a 5-2 would look like with Shoot setting on front row and Gabriel subbing to set on the back row.

Gabriel's defense, coverage, serve, and footwork getting under passes looked somewhat better than Shook, but having a taller block and setter attack option with Shook at the front would be helpful.

Yeah, it's not like Texas sucks...we just suck against teams with the same talent level...so until Elliott ever decides to retire, we're gonna be stuck with him.

I agree. But I am wondering if an assistant coach change would help? Sullivan coaches the liberos and seems content where he is, but I wonder if Johnson will want to get back to being a head coach any time soon.

  6. I wonder if this law will also apply to individuals only traveling domestically in NZ. I think this law is basically the rule in the US--except for the threat of fine and/or prosecution--US border agents can pretty much force you to unlock your phone or laptop unless you want the device confiscated.

Ever since I heard the story about US CBP agents demanding that a NASA employee unlock his NASA-issued phone, I have wondered what you do if you are traveling with work devices that contain confidential information/any other information typically protected from disclosure (medical, legal, corporate, client info, etc.). I would not trust that any copy made of the devise is properly deleted and safe from security breaches.

I could be wrong here but I don't think Hahn or Rounsaville had the same rep as Petersen coming out of HS.

Pretty sure you are right, I just glanced at their awards and special teams they had been named to.

But I do think Petersen is a great addition at libero, and IMO her SR control and tougher serve are looking better than McCoy.

  8. How do you pick between benching Hahn or Rounsaville? Honest question, because besides the Stanford match, for two years I feel like they both have been equally weak at service errors and ball control.

But I just took a quick peek at their HS bios, and it seems like they were just about equal to Petersen in terms of being recognized statewide and nationally prior to arriving at Texas. So I don’t know if it’s a recruiting problem or a development problem, but it seems to keep happening.

  9. I know the commentators keep talking about the outsides not producing, but I honestly think it’s pretty hard with Shook’s sets, how well the Stanford block sets up, and their defense is getting to everything. A lot of those hits would be kills against other teams IMO.

  10. That’s just poor coaching with not managing the subs properly. Also, Autumn should have NEVER been trying to block, instead you put up a solo block, have Autumn drop off, and adjust the defense to cover more of the court

One thing that hasn't been mentioned on this thread yet is Kilmainham Gaol, the old prison. Good historic information and it is pretty close to Phoenix Park, which is a really nice and large park in Dublin (both are city bus pass stops)

I second the suggestion on the Kilmainham Gaol prison, I thought it was really interesting and I am glad that we took a tour at the last minute.

I also agree that the Hop On Hop Off bus tour is an easy and fairly cheap way to both travel around the city and see some of the most popular tourist spots.

I would also suggest a visit to the St. Patricks Cathedral.

It does look like there is a bus into town. I think I'd like to explore the town more than soak. I really want the food experience. Sounds like it will be not as good as I expected. But still good. It was going to be a wasted day anyway because of the time change.

I heard that about WOW, but can't take advantage this time. Maybe next time.

I dont know if you are still planning your trip but here is my advice...The bus is easy and cheaper, but just be aware there may be extra travel time because you have to drop some people off at hotels and then stop to switch over to a new bus to get to city center. A lot of people hit the Blue Lagoon on their way to or from the airport, so it is pretty easy. If you land at 5AM, the best way to go to Blue Lagoon is if you buy tickets early and show up when it opens (7AM) because it is not crowded yet. Honestly, you may be able to do both Blue Lagoon and a little bit of Reykjavik if you watch your time closely. Reykjavik is a smaller and interesting city, but mostly what I remember about Iceland are the tours/sites outside of the city. So, IMO,  if you just do the Blue Lagoon you wont be missing out on too much, you will just have to go back again! One more thing, I dont know what the luggage situation is, but the Blue Lagoon does have storage if you cant check in/leave your bags at the airport.

You'd likely send the strongest boys first as they have a better chance of surviving shit you didn't plan for. Plus it boosts the moral of everyone involved, especially those waiting to be pulled out.

I have no legitimate source, but this is what I have read from local reporters (mostly on Twitter):

The original plan was strongest out first; however the day of the rescue, the Aussie doc/diver made the call to send out the weakest first.  The press conference also hints that at least one of the first boys rescued was unconscious, because they specified that all 4 boys rescued second were strong and "all conscious".

I keep forgetting that none of the boys even knew how to swim! Honestly, I still beilieve they have to be drugged at least a little bit, less stress and less oxygen output. Also, I actually think the coach (who is still believed to be in the cave) will be the hardest rescue of all, since he is bigger than the other boys and is weaker from giving away all his food. The community seems to not be putting any blame on either the boys or the coach, and some of the boys schoolmates are quoted saying they have explored much deeper from where the boys currently are.

  14. This was a great series to watch, and I am pleasantly surprised we are going to Omaha (personally I think Augie has something to do with it 🤘). Overall, I think pitching held up for the most part, and our at bats improved throughout the weekend.

The only thing is I hope Henley's performance today doesn't mess with his mental game in Omaha.

  15. Intellegence Matters with the former acting Director of the CIA Michael Morell. -- I have always been interested in the intellegence community, and have really enjoyed conversations and explanations about complex security issues from people who are knowledgable about the various moving parts.  It can sometimes get political, but I think he is pretty good about inviting people from both sides of the aisle.

However, if you dont listen to any other episode, everyone should take a listen to the January 9th, Secret Artifacts: A journey through the worlds most secretive museum. The episode discusses various artifacts held at the CIA, which are not open to public viewing, and it was by far one of the most interesting podcast episodes I have listened to. [availiable here: https://www.thecipherbrief.com/podcasts/intelligence-matters or here: https://intelligencematters.libsyn.com/secret-artifacts-a-journey-through-the-worlds-most-secretive-museum; unfortunately, it seems to be only available online after it recently changed "owners".]

I cant believe it has been over a year since I posted on my favorite thread. Let me reintroduce Ellie, my lab mix.

Unfortunately, I have a few questions related to parvo exposure: tl;dr - my vaccinated 2.5 yr. old dog was exposed to parvo Wednesday (via roommates 11 week old pup), so I’m wondering  whether there is anything I need to do at this point & how much disinfecting needs to happen?

My roommate acted like the pup’s vet said we didn’t need to do anything, but after researching, a lot of articles recommended throwing away all porous objects - including toys, beds, bones, collars, leashes. Plus, of course bleach is basically the only thing that kills the virus, and our carpet and laminate can’t be bleached.

So has anyone previously dealt with parvo and have advice? I am calling my vet later, but sometimes they give advice based on the worst case scenario that costs mucho dinero. I also know I will be stuck with all the required cleaning, but at least it will be done right.

That would be a long train ride, but yes Scotland is nice and weather is also agreeable.

If I remember correctly it was around 4.5 hours from Kings Cross to Edinburgh. It was a beautiful trip, and somewhat easier than navigating Heathrow more than necessary. Either way, I think that it would be possible to hit London, Edinburgh, and some of the Highlands (depending on how many sites you want to see).

  18. I think there is plenty to keep you busy, and exploring the Alps would probably be more relaxing than staying in a city for a full week. I went at the end of June a few years ago, and this is what we did in or near Munich/Saltzburg/the Alps, plus how long we were there - hope this is helpful:

Munich - Dachu, BMW Museum, Hofbrauhaus, and day trip to Rothenberg (there for about 2.5 days)

Saltzburg - Sound of Music Tour, Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mozart's Birthplace, and day trip to Berchtesgaden Salt Mine (there for about a 1.5 days)

Annaberg, Austria - white water rafting, hiking, and mostly relaxing (there for about 2 days) - I believe there are a lot of little ski towns that have activities similar to what you would find in Colorado in the summer.

However, if you do decide to go to London, it is pretty easy to take a train to Scotland, which has been the favorite place I have visited.
