  5. 247 The Eyes of Texas: Former Big 12 coach weighs in on Texas OPPORTUNITY FOR TEXAS IN 2019? I talked to a former Big 12 head coach this week who had some interesting perspective on the Big 12 race in 2019 and why the Longhorns should be back in the conference championship game again this season. The coach said even though the Longhorns have a lot of experience to replace on defense, including both starting cornerbacks, “I think Texas has to be looking at this year as a great opportunity to break through.” Why? There were several reasons mentioned by the former Big 12 coach, including: Sam Ehlinger returning at quarterback “Ehlinger is one of those ultimate alpha quarterbacks who teammates love, who grew up before our eyes last season. Credit Tom (Herman) and Tim Beck for getting him over the hump after he turned it over late in the Maryland loss last year. For Ehlinger to go 300-something passes without an interception after that, including the win over OU, tells you everything you need to know. As long as he (Ehlinger) stays healthy, Texas’ offense should continue to improve.” Tom Herman calling offensive plays “It was obvious Tom was calling the plays last season, because one of the things Tom is really good at it is getting the offense into rhythm with his play calls. Whether it’s with tempo or not, he just has a really good feel for what his players do well and when to call those plays against the defense they’re facing. They didn’t have a lot of margin for error in most of their games last season, and Tom did a nice job of calling plays that kept drives moving, eating clock and keeping some explosive offenses in our league off the field.” The Texas defense might be inexperienced, but it’s talented “We recruited against Texas, so I know the talent they have, and they have some talented guys who probably ready to step it up this season — guys like Joseph Ossai, Jalen Green, Anthony Cook and Keondre Coburn. Here’s my big question for them defensively: Was Tom (Herman) dictating to (Todd) Orlando some of the defenses he wanted called? A lot of teams tried to take what (Iowa State defensive coordinator) Jon Heacock was doing (with his 3-8 cloud) and employ elements of it. And it seemed like Tom might have told Orlando to incorporate more of that last season, and I’m not sure it came naturally to Todd (Orlando). Orlando is an attack guy, who does a really nice job disguising pressure. So, I suspect they’ll either double-down on the 3-8 stuff or get away from it and probably do what Orlando does best, which is use their speed to disguise pressure. But even though Texas has a bunch of starters who just left on defense, they still have a bunch of really talented dudes ready to take those spots.” The Big 12 seems to be in transition in 2019 “There are four new head coaches (at Texas Tech, West Virginia, Kansas State and Kansas) and new offensive coordinators at Iowa State and Oklahoma State. And there’s not the experience at quarterback in the league we’ve had in recent years. Right now, the most experienced quarterbacks in the league are at Texas (Ehlinger), OU (Jalen Hurts), K-State (Skylar Thompson) and Baylor (Charlie Brewer). And two of those are learning new offenses (Hurts and Thompson). So, Texas has a bunch of players who just got a taste of playing for the Big 12 title last year who know each other and should be hungry and on a bit of a mission. That counts for a lot.” The former Big 12 coach said Oklahoma will undoubtedly be the favorite going into the year. But the source said there are a couple things to watch with regard to the Sooners in 2019. “Obviously, OU is the favorite, because Lincoln Riley has shown he can plug transfer quarterbacks into his offense and not miss a beat. But he had Baker Mayfield and Kylar Murray each for two years before their Heisman seasons, and he’ll have only had Jalen Hurts for a spring. Will that matter? Maybe not. But it’s something to watch. “Also, how does Lincoln mesh with Alex Grinch, his new defensive coordinator? Remember, Lincoln inherited Mike Stoops when Bob (Stoops) stepped down. Then, because they made the (College Football) Playoff, Lincoln probably felt he couldn’t make a change. I’d heard Lincoln was gathering intel on potential defensive coordinators from the time he got the job. So, he finally has his own guy. And Grinch is good. He might get that defense to really take off, kind of like Orlando did in his first year at Texas.” In conclusion, the former Big 12 coach said: “I’d be surprised if it’s not Texas and Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game again this year. And if that’s the case, it will come down to which team is playing better defensively. That’s how that game was decided last year. Texas had control of the (title) game defensively early, and OU made the play defensively late with the strip sack of Ehlinger in the end zone.”

  7. Sunday Updates | Big Recruiting WeekendBy: Super KPosted on: June 23, 2019 ***I am told that Bijan Robinson and his family are really enjoying the trip. I don’t know about USC but it does sound like Texas has outdone Ohio State. I don’t want to get you all too excited yet but there is reason for cautious optimism. But I’ll need to speak to Robinson or his mother before I can tell you much more. ***On the Bryson Washington front, going into this I believe he was leaning OU. Now? I get the sense he is leaning Texas. Again, should know more definitively in the next few days as we speak to the visitors but based on my text interactions with him and word from sources, I think Texas pulled ahead. We’ll see how this one settles because there is little doubt OU will be reaching out to him soon after the visit. ***Have not received word yet on whether Jahari Rogers is going to make a decision this weekend but I’ll be mildly surprised if he ends up somewhere other than Texas. Super K Sorry fellas…too many details would give it away. I can tell you it wasn’t anyone mentioned in the write up above
  8. Per TFB The annual Texas Heat Wave has concluded and the talented group of youngsters on campus have dried off and headed home for the most part. I’ll drop some of the biggest takeaways from the Heat Wave below. There wasn’t a ton of notes. Disappointingly, Johnny Wilson and Bijan Robinson were unavailable to talk with the media. Alfred Collins I last saw Collins during the fall of 2018 for one of his games. He looked like a completely different person Saturday afternoon at the Heat Wave. Collins is up to 280 pounds (!!) and has absolutely filled out. One of the biggest concerns I had about Collins after watching him was how long it would take him to get up to playable weight at a large Division 1 school, and it is safe to say he’s done that in about six months. Collins will be taking all five official visits and will likely make a decision towards the end of senior season, if not after. BIJAN ROBINSON 2020 We were unable to talk with Bijan, but it sure looked like he and his mother were enjoying their time on campus when they road by on a golf cart. Quaydarius Davis 2021 The first commit in the 2021 class was back on campus. Quaydarius Davis said he had a great time with the staff and several recruits on campus. Davis is firmly solid and said he was very happy to establish further relationships with the coaches and some 2020 commits. Quentin Johnston 2020 Johnston made it in for the Heat Wave like expected. Unfortunately, I was unable to speak with him having just gotten there when he was being dropped off from the pool. Regardless, Johnston is still high on Texas. Octavious Oxendine 2020 Coming in from Radcliffe, Kentucky, Oxendine didn’t speak with us this afternoon, but instead got a private ride to his car with DL Coach Oscar Giles. A golf cart of Giles and Oxendine alone would struggle going up any hill as Oxendine is an absolute unit. It truly appears the interest is high on both sides for a the pure defensive tackle. We’ll keep close tags on him moving forward. Reuben Fatheree 2021 The massive 2021 OT from Richmond Foster HS made it in for the Heat Wave. Fatheree talked most about potentially playing both basketball and football at the next level, a talk that stemmed from him dominating the pool basketball game during the Heat Wave. At the moment, it doesn’t sound like not being able to play basketball is a deal breaker for whichever school he picks. Fatheree did hint at potentially taking 10 official visits, five for football and five for basketball, when the time comes, but that now is still a long ways away. Regardless it should be interesting to follow throughout the next 12 months. Fatheree said he had not heard from Shaka Smart for those wondering. Jalen Milroe 2021 After being offered at the last Texas camp of the spring, Jalen Milroe was back on campus for the second time in a month. This time with the backing of an offer, Milroe was able to create and expand currently relationships with the Texas staff, one of them being Tom Herman, who he was unable to talk to during the last camp. JD COFFEY 2021 Like Milroe, Coffey returned to campus for the first time since being offered by the Texas staff. Coffey is looking to make a decision following his junior season per 247Sports. Jalen Logan-Redding 2020 Logan-Redding made his third trip to Austin which certainly speaks for his interest in the Longhorns. Coming in from Missouri, he’s been pegged early to the Tigers, but is still visiting schools heading into his senior season. Juan Davis 2021 Add Everman ATH Juan Davis to the list of visitors making their first visit since obtaining a Texas offer. Davis is intriguing no doubt. At 6-foot, 4-inches, Davis is currently listed as a tightend but has the body to make the move outside to wide receiver.
  9. Here’s something I saw on Facebook A few notes from today's Heat Wave recruiting event on the UT campus: --- A lot of talk today about the #DallasToAustin movement, and the movement seems very real. "We talk about that a lot – keeping people inside [the state]," said recent Texas offer and 2021 DeSoto defensive lineman Shemar Turner. After leaving today's event, that's the thing that stood out the most: how much the Dallas-area prospects discussed playing together. "If you leave Texas, it’s like, why are leaving our town for another state? I want to stay home," said recent commitment Quay Davis. Turner referenced how in-state programs could be on top like Alabama is now if the talent didn't go out of state. "It’s going to pick up some momentum because we want people to stay in state instead of going out of state," Turner said. Speaking of him, the only school he mentioned today was Texas. He'll make a return trip on July 27th, which sounds like Texas's big summer camp night. And while we're on the subject of #DallasToAustin, I underestimated how big of a recruiting get Duncanville QB Ja'Quinden Jackson was for Texas. It seems he has the respect and attention of a lot of the state's top prospects, especially those players in Dallas, including 2021 five-star offensive lineman Savion Byrd. "Important. Like you need him," responded Davis when asked how big of a role Jackson's commitment played and what it means for Texas. "That’s a bad man right there." Davis said a reason for a lot of discussion between some prospects in that area, notably the ones on campus today, is because they all know each other. It reminds me some of the Houston-area prospects in the 2018 class. "It’s building a lot because everyone is coming together. We grew up together. Like me and Ja’Quinden. We grew up together. Connections," Davis state. As for Jackson, he looks like a NFL player right now. My goodness. He is a specimen. Good luck to any high school defense trying to tackle him. --- After talking with recent 2021 QB offer Jalen Milroe, it's hard not to think Texas is in a really, really good spot with him. "I’ve been coming to Texas since I was in eighth grade. Now having that offer, and now the 2021 class is now on [the radar], it’s cool building relationships with the coaches," he said. "I’m more comfortable because I’ve been going back and forth coming for game and visit. It was nice building a relationship with the coaching staff and having an opportunity to talk to coach Herman when I first got here. The philosophy he has for Texas, talking to the coaching staff their relationship with the players because they are with the players and what they’re preaching to the players. And they have NFL guys they still talk to, and how loyal he is to them and how he is off the field. I liked talking to coach Herman and coach Beck." It's not a surprise that Texas would be interested in Milroe because of his talent and skill set. Unsurprisingly, it sounds like the Texas offense is one Milroe likes and is familiar with. "I do," he responded when asked if he felt Texas's system was a good fit for him. "I’ve been looking at the offense Herman has run at Houston and Texas and I like the offense they run. The offense he’s been running I’ve been running at high school. I’d feel comfortable running the offense." Milroe is currently taking summer school, and is a young man with a plan. He knows he wants to graduate early, and when he'd like to make a commitment decision. "I’m thinking about making my commitment earlier because I’m graduating early. Making a commitment before the season starts or in the middle of the season," he said. As for where Texas stands, again, it sounds like UT is in good shape. "Honestly, yeah," he said about growing up a Texas fan. "I grew up in Texas, so I know how big Texas football his. I grew up watching Texas. Now, I’m one of the recruits and I’m able to experience it, it’s awesome for me. Talking to my parents about it, I have top schools. Texas is definitely one of my top schools." Milroe has a visit planned to Oregon on July 27th, but that's it. --- I have to admit I am very bummed I missed out on the wing-eating contest. I love wings. According to the recruits, the coaches defeated the players in the contest. It sounds like the coaches fed the players and recruits burgers early on before the contest. Smart, veteran move. The atmosphere today is something many recruits said they enjoyed. "When I first walked in here, it was laid back. Then when we got to the pool, it was like a whole different energy," said 2020 Temple prospect Quentin Johnson. "It just turned up a level. All the coaches were hyped. All the players and recruits were hyped. Had fun meeting new people. It’s just like electrifying. You almost get chills being here." Johnson said he's looking for a family feel, and is interested in studying Business in college. He spent a lot of time talking with receivers coach Drew Mehringer about where he'd fit, and the UT receivers coach made it clear he'd have an opportunity to compete for a spot immediately. --- We saw Bijan Robinson zooming around on a golf cart multiple times getting the royal treatment. He had a big smile on his face. Since he was on his official visit, we were unable to talk with him. Also, Johnny Wilson used his speed to duck inside, and had yet to come outside when we left. From what we heard, he's not the recruit Bryan Carrington's tweet referred to. --- Spent some time talking with Marqez Bimage's father, who was one of the current players' parents that came down to speak with the recruits and their families. From covering these events since Tom Herman arrived, there's always some parents giving back and willing to use some of their free time to come speak on behalf of the program and answer questions. I think that speaks very well about the culture of the program. Even though he wasn't there today, I believe Hudson Card's mother was there helping out as well. --- We were dropping some notes in today's live thread, so check that out as well. 1 Today at 6:31 PM
