2004 just barely won miraculously when their QB inexplicably fumbled the ball. 2000 and 2003 were not shitty teams.

Sure 2014 and 2021 were shitty but even by those teams shitty standards those Arky games were bad beat downs. And 2014 Arkansas weren't exactly world beaters.

That 2014 Arkansas team should have been much better than 7-6, Bielema kinda screwed the pooch on that season. Lots of close losses including to Alabama 14-13. Had a top 10 defense and NFL guys on offense like Alex Collins, Hunter Henry, Brandon Allen (who is surprisingly still in the league).

Not winning 9-10 games in 2014 or 2015 is probably what eventually led to him not getting more time to turn it around after a bad 2017 season.

I'm surprised more fans aren't concerned about the Texas run defense going against a top 10 rushing team. That's been the weakest link all season and Texas gave up 6.1 ypc to a FL RB on 19 carries. That's not too good, and FL didn't have a run threat at QB to worry about.

This game is also in Fayetteman and pig has had 2 weeks to prepare. I wonder what trick plays had sex with VB player will come up with.  Texas just better come in with their heads on straight and piss in their veins.

A HB pass with Ja'Quinden Jackson just seems too obvious but I've been expecting it to happen in this game all year.

For some reason though over the last two years Arkansas has been a much better road team than they are at home (Tennessee notwithstanding). Had great games @ LSU, @ Alabama and @ Ole Miss last year and then 2/3 SEC wins this year were on the road - but then they tend to lay an egg at home and struggle with teams like UAB for some reason. It's really weird.

I like to watch rival youtube videos to see if there is any insight and I made the mistake of making through 6 minutes of this shit and these two morons are everything I imagine Arkansas fan to be:

Quote 1) Arkansas was a bigger rivalry in the 60's than OU because Texas could not play OU back then.

Quote 2) Will Trump make it? I don't know he just took office.

I spoiler-ed the shit because they are doing horns down and you really do not want to waste any time like I did on it.

That's actually the Arkansas left tackle and his brother who do that podcast every week. He transferred from San Jose State and the whole family is from the west coast so I wouldn't figure they're very familiar with SWC history lol.

Some Arkansas statistical rankings in the FBS (lower is worse)

#118 opponent yards per passing attempt

#110 in penalty yards per game

    #107 opponent completion percentage

    #98 in field position

    #97 red zone scoring percentage

    #93 turnover margin per game

This team loses at the margins and at defending the pass

    **

    What are they good at?

#39 on offensive 3rd down conversion rates, #7 in offensive rushing success rate, #13 in passing offensive success rate, and #38 in defensive yards per rushing attempt. So they move the ball really well on offense, and are solid against the run on defense, although they struggle to score once they get into the red zone

The Arkansas offense has quietly been really good this year at moving the ball, they just turn it over every other play and make self-inflicted mistakes. Dumb turnovers is what has kept Arkansas from being 7-2 right now and most likely in the top 25. They beat Tennessee because they actually took care of the ball and didn't turn it over a single time.

The secondary has gotten exposed against Dart and Nussmeier, really the only two decent QBs they've faced this year (with Nico being inconsistent as a freshman). Getting Jaylon Braxton back should help (who is Arkansas' best CB but has been out since week two) but there just aren't enough dudes who can cover 1:1 against SEC receivers and Travis Williams doesn't play much zone to help mitigate that since he likes to blitz so much.

All the College Baseball Showcase coaches were on a zoom earlier today and Pierce joked that Heston Tole "will be our Friday night starter and I don't know why Dave (Van Horn) let him go."

Van Horn laughed "I knew that was coming."

FWIW, Arkansas staff is deep, but there's no elite starters as of now.  Hagan Smith and Jaxon Wiggins have potential to be that guy but can also have pretty bad nights.  I would bet Smith starts Friday.

In the field, only two regular starters return (Stovall and Slavens) and two part timers (Bohrofen and Diggs).  Rest are portal, JUCO or HS guys.  No clue how the new guys will hit and will almost assuredly be a much worse fielding team than Hogs had last year.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Wiggins starts on Friday either. It’s his draft year and he was dominant in the Fall, though that doesn’t always mean anything.

Defense is definitely the biggest question mark since last year it was incredible but lost so much. 3B and SS are still somewhat up for grabs with position battles. 2/3 of our starting outfield are former Big 12 players in Bohrofen from OU and Josenberger from Kansas so should be interesting if any of the opposing coaches have faced them before.

Most of those teams have fans that are passionate about basketball.  Not so much in the SEC.

This is very true. Some SEC fanbases even put college baseball on equal footing as basketball.

You'll still get the casual fans to show up for teams like Alabama and Auburn when they're ranked in the top 10 but very few are dedicated enough to show up for Wednesday night against directional schools like in some other conferences.

I admire the SEC in football. But the Big12 is a vastly better basketball conference in my opinion. This is a big downgrade for hoops.

KenPom has the Big 12 and SEC as the two best CBB conferences in 2022. So it's a step down but not a gigantic one.

The SEC has definitely gotten better recently and made much better coaching hires. The problem in the past was usually that the conference had rosters full of great athletes but mediocre basketball players. They could posterize the crap out of you but had no footwork or fundamentals.

I am of the belief nothing in football good happens behind the LoS. Briles seemed more organized yesterday, he doesn’t like play cards and he admits he doesn’t select plays to set up other plays. He calls plays only after the whistle of the previous play which makes his hunh slow. I think Pittman horn h Uhh is shit a lo about it. Still a lot of fake here then thee and jetsweep fakes taa a king two ir three out of the play. The sec has too much lateral speed for that bullshit. It’s about power and vertical speed. He and his old man can get the fuck out.

Whatever he does it was good enough to lead all of P5 in rushing last season

They are revolutionizing NIL, yet announcing it via Myspace?.. On par for Arkansans, I suppose.

Apparently Twitter has a thing called spaces now. So he was saying his (Twitter) space which is why it wasn't all one word.

Basically this new organization is a consortium that companies can donate money to fund, and athletes can sign deals with it and receive money for doing charitable work for nonprofits in Arkansas. Basketball player JD Notae is the first to sign so he will receive compensation for doing work with Samaritan's Feet which is a local nonprofit. Hard to tell how much of an impact this will cause but it all depends on if other companies want to jump in to help fund it.

Seems like something that could easily be copied by other schools though. The Waltons generally don't give a crap about Arkansas sports but the charitable side may change things and it would be hard to top if they did get involved.

They look pretty set at LB and DB, what's the outlook on DL for this year?

Need a DT pretty bad in the portal. Could use a proven pass rusher too but not sure how many will be available after the spring. Was hoping to get Jaxon Player.

Guess it helps that Odom basically runs a 3-2-6 but not sure if it's his preference or if it's because we just don't have enough SEC-quality DL so he does it out of necessity. Currently it's definitely the biggest question mark on the defense, plus we just fired our DL coach.

Out of those four, 2 had extenuating circumstances (*) and 2 were overrated as 4-stars (^), and 1 can't remember at all and he flamed out in 2 years.

    2022

    UF, TxTech (overrated)

    2021
    * OkSt (wants to play DB but OU and A&M said LB only)
Ark (wants to play RB but better at DB)
    ^ OkSt (best offer)

    2020

    2019
    Mich, Ark
    ^ OkSt (overrated; best offer)

    2018
Ohio St, UTx (Casey Thompson :))
OkSt (no recollection of the guy; he portaled to Wazzau in 2019)

I’ve always wondered why Arkansas historically has never recruited Tulsa much when it’s only 2 hours away. Pittman has changed that since he’s been here, which makes sense since he grew up in Grove I guess. Aren’t going to get many that OU wants but still plenty of talent to pick from.

Yeah, that question crossed my mind too.  Wonder if Kendal stays with Pittman another year or two, then possibly the stench isn't quite as bad -- especially if Sam provides a good recommendation he might get a shot as a head coach.  Just not sure where that would be though??

If I were Kendal, I just don't think I would go to work for "Crystalbals"

I think he may get a decent G5 job after next season. Don't see a P5 program going after him just yet though.

Probably getting a pay bump up to $1.4 million to stay at Arkansas.

They wanted LSU or Arkansas, but LSU already had two QB commits by the time King blew up, and Arkansas was always going to take Chandler Morris

Yeah, kinda funny how that all worked out.

-Chad takes his son over King, gets fired and Chandler decommits.

-King commits to A&M, UNC staff drops Malik Hornsby for Arkansas in-state QB Jacolby Criswell

-New Arkansas staff tries to flip Criswell but he sticks with UNC so Hornsby basically falls in Arkansas' lap.

It seems like that but it's usually one school every 2-3 years who wins 10 finishes and 3rd in the division.  Then you go look at the numbers.  3 OOC wins versus McNeese State,  Mercer and Winthrop.   Then another 3-4 versus Vandy, South Carolina, Mizzou and Arky.  They beat a down (for that year) MSU/Ole Miss/Tennessee/Florida who all started the year in the top 25 so they get lip service for those wins.  Then they shit the bed versus LSU, Bama and/or UGa and every just chalks it up "it just means more."

The SEC then pairs them up with an average team from the Big XII, Big 10 or ACC who skull fucks them in a bowl game but because "A&M/Auburn/LSU/Florida/etc. didn't want to be there and the SEC is more competitive and harder week after week in conference than anything Penn State/Wiscy/Virginia Tech/Tech/Baylor sees in conference."

    See how this works?

Every conference has some sort of cannibalism to it. I haven't actually researched it but it sure does seem like most of the time the SEC team gets matched up with a team that finished higher in another conference. I know the year we finished 3rd in the division we got the Big 12 co-champ Kansas State and beat them by double digits.

The SEC gets the benefit of the doubt since the recruiting and amount of NFL draft picks are just so much higher than any other conference, more talent than anywhere else. Haven't crunched the numbers on the actual bowl results. I know people acted like A&M coming into the SEC with Manziel and winning was a slight on the SEC but they destroyed Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl that year too.

  15. Alabama, Florida, Auburn, LSU and even Tennessee have all won national titles in the last 25 years. And Georgia is generally a top 10 team with a lot of talent.

It's just hard to climb that ladder for the rest of the conference. I'm not one of those who thinks the bottom of the SEC would be the top in any other conference but you legitimately have 5 programs that think they should be winning it all every year. Arkansas, A&M, Ole Miss and Mississippi State have had seasons where they've won 10-11 games but finished 3rd in the division.

I was surprised at the lack of QB depth.  After Jefferson, it’s really just Hornsby and he evidently can’t throw at all.

Surprised they didn’t hit the portal.

Every QB behind Jefferson is a Freshman so probably want to give them all more reps and time to develop. John Stephen Jones is technically the 3rd string QB but everyone knows he's not going to play any meaningful snaps. Would have loved for him to have trotted out there to take a knee in his grandpa's stadium though 😂

    Hornsby - covid freshman
    Kade Renfro - covid freshman
    Lucas Coley - true freshman

Arkansas isn't taking a QB in the 2022 recruiting class either for similar reasons I would guess.

Correct, and I agree.  They had gotten turned down by most everyone and even Pittman said he didn't think he was getting the job.  They took a flyer on him because they knew him from his time there, players liked him, he could recruit, and he was cheap.  In return they gave him more money for top assistants.  He had never even been a coordinator before so I thought it was a big reach but he's turned out to be a good HC.  Solid recruiter, players love him, and he's a good fit with the fan base.  Good guy, too.

Yeah former players advocated for Pittman from the start. I think Arkansas was close to hiring Kiffin but depending who you listen to he either chose Ole Miss over Arkansas or the Arkansas AD didn’t like him trying to leverage more money from Arkansas with the Ole Miss opening and moved on. And then Drinkwitz thought the state of the roster was too big of a rebuild.

Pretty much every candidate kept talking about the challenges of the job but Pittman talked about how badly he wanted it and his plan for turning it around and that was refreshing. He accepted the job without even asking about how much his salary would be.

I agree the Pigs will lose but any reference to a team that amassed 60 yards of offense versus Minnesota when playing at home is not a good comparison.

I’d also say calling Pig not good after 3 games is premature. To me their great unknown is pass defense. We suspect their pass offense is questionable but that’s a bit uncertain too. It’s probably not great but they’re hopeful for functional.

Arkansas really hasn't been in a position where the offense has been forced to pass this year yet, only averaging about 20 attempts per game. If A&M gets ahead by 2 scores early or puts Arkansas in a lot of 3rd and long situations then that will really test things though.

Yep... Arky and A&M should be playing this as a home/home series instead of deferring it to Jerryworld.   More so Arky should drop the Jerryworld experience because the ratio of aggy will always be greater at Jerryworld than Hog because of proximity to their fan base.    I could understand when this was a non conference match maybe having it there.  But this isn't Texas/OU or Florida/UGA where the matchup is tied to a certain location going waaaayyyy back several decades.

Yeah it started off as an OOC game there for two years prior to them joining the SEC.

The fan split used to be more even (or maybe 55-45 A&M) but obviously Arkansas sucking so much lately it's gone way in favor of A&M. I agree that it needs to go back to campus but I wonder if there would be plans to replace it with a Big 12 team if that happens. I don't really think Arkansas needs that game anymore with road games in Austin and College Station now in the conference anyway for Texas recruiting exposure...if it even helps with Texas recruiting now.

Arkansas won their Super Bowl. The rest of the season doesn’t matter.

A&M fans are calling this game Arkansas' Super Bowl too...guess we'll play a lot of them this year.

19 hours ago, Tex Pete said:

Arkansas' offensive strengths line up with aggy's defensive strengths. Aggy isn't dumb enough to allow Arkansas to run all over them. You make them beat you with the QB's arm. We opted not to do that.

They did allow Colorado's QB to rush for 76 yards and gave up 5 YPC to Kent State. I think the key will be if Calzada can hit some of those deep passes that Card couldn't complete if Arkansas decides to go with a similar gameplan and try to stuff the run. Odom against a fairly inexperienced QB is usually pretty good though.

If your school started playing Arkysaw in Fayetteville instead of Jerry World, you’d see the difference between how they react to their biggest rival evar coming to town vs how they react to just another conference opponent.

2010 Alabama was just as loud if not louder than last Saturday's game was. Of course, back then both teams were ranked in the top 10-15. It being Texas was probably part of it but this was also the first time Arkansas has somewhat had hope for a decent season in a long while with no COVID precautions to throw a wrench in things. If the Texas-Arkansas game came at the end of a season where we were 2-9 or something then it would likely be a ghost town.

Even 2014 Alabama, Jalen Hurts said Razorback Stadium was the loudest game he played in that year. 2016 Ole Miss at one point in the game reached decibel levels that ESPN said were in the top 10 they've recorded for a college football game at the time. So fans do show up for other games but just not when there is no hope Arkansas will even be remotely competitive.
