This is the annoying thing about volleyball. I would like to see how many teams have held home court over the last few years. It seems like a high percentage.

Postseason play in this sport seems to be all about the regular season and winning home court.

I think if we played BYU on a neutral court we win at least 1 or 2 sets tonight.

I’m okay with it because it’s not like Texas hasn’t had the benefit of playing the post season at home.

Well why have the teams sucked at it, with notable exceptions, for Elliott's tenure? He may know it's important the same way we do and have about the same sense of how to coach it as we do.

IMO it has more to do with recruiting/evaluating the right DS. I’ve always been a person that believed coaching to an extent is overrated. There’s not that many ways to teach someone how to receive serve/control the ball. I always believed that most players come into college with the skill to do so.

It's just irritating that every year we have as good a front court as anyone and lose our games in predictable fashion on back court play.

And it isn't just bitchy fan perception, either. Texas has the rep of not being well rounded. If you can exploit the back court you will win.

They have that rep but personally I didn’t think Texas lost today strictly because of it.

Honestly, I think it's coming from up top (Elliott)....it's been his M.O. to develop terminal hitters and blockers...the same effort needs to be placed on serve-receive and back row defense....it'd be even better if he could consistently train his OHs to be true 6-rotation players like Jones-Perry.

Again, I thought the serve receive was solid most of the match until the end of sets.

I don't mean whether to replace him or not, but rather whether he's a really top tier coach or has just positioned himself to appear that way.

Jerritt has his flaws but there’s no question he would win and be successful in any conference.

The sheer fact that DS don't get ships is an indication that he dgaf. CDC is probably the only hope.

I thought that he was saying that this was a normal practice in all of women’s volleyball.

Poor defensive back row and overall ball-control coaching.....they need to be trained to do more than just get a hard-driven ball up....they need to train to consistently pass it close to the net and up TO the setter....same goes for serve-receive.

So what you’re saying is that Sullivan a guy that’s played and Coached at a high level at other schools doesn’t know what he’s doing.

Meh. I don't like these discussions because there are two sides to the coin. We would have fewer conference championships if we played in the B1G or Pact 12 but I think it would also help us to play in more competitive conferences come tournament time.

The Big 12 obviously isn't nearly the same level conference as the PAC 12 or B1G but you don't consistently make the final 4/elite 8 unless you're an elite coach.

Not to mention its not like BYU is playing the Brazilian team every match in their conference.

I mean the perception is that he is elite due to the facts you cite. So he is elite.

But Goodmans points are legit. He's a nobody in the B1G or PAC12.

I’m not buying that. He won at USC with players that he helped recruit.

Ball control and defense never have and never will be good under JE.

He has made Gregory the best home court in America, a very weak league since NU left and taken advantage of ATX as a recruiting tool but he is not an elite coach.

Interesting, I don’t think the Coach before Elliott took advantage of this supposedly great recruiting advantage of being in ATX. And last time I checked recruiting is a part of coaching. The coach that got fired at Oregon right? Every coach has their strengths and weakness.

DS's don't get scholarships. Liberos do - Petersen, McCoy, Palmer (although she came in as a hybrid athlete that transitioned to Libero), Yogi, and Jennings.

Kisner was an in-state pick-up as are Rounsaville and Hahn.

I did not know that. Since that is the case if seems like Coach Elliott and his staff have to do a better job of evaluating the position.

It's worthless message board talk. Texas is never going to fire a coach that makes at least the elite 8 every year, wins conference championships every year, and already has a championship to his name.

It's like Kansas firing Bill Self in basketball. Actually very similar resumes. Kansas would be the joke of the basketball world if they fired Self. Same would be true with Texas if they fired Elliott.

Agreed. I would be all for replacing Elliott if there was 100 % certainty that a coach would do better. And you also have to keep in mind that Stanford has the built in advantage of great academics for women athletes which is very important in the women sports that don’t get paid a lot professionally.

When the 'littles' get a ball that is slowed down by the block, they pass it well.  It's 2-3 off the net, and the setter has options.

When they are digging balls that get past the block, they either don't get to it and if they do, it's not controlled well....the ball usually gets passed way off the net and behind the 10' line and then the offense becomes one dimensional and easy to stop because it's going to the left pin.

It was different when we had players like Destinee, Haley, and Bailey who consistently hit over the block....but we don't have players like that anymore.

Therefore, the staff needs to focus on developing a better defensive back row to stay IN-SYSTEM and have more hitting options.

Okay, ball control wasn’t good, right? And I’ve always felt like Elliott didn’t recruit the DS position well in terms of scholarships.

Passing fell apart at the end of the set. Pressure from 20 on got to them. Home court was big, but the morms were better.

Absolutely. You have to figure that home court advantage is worth at least 2 points maybe even 3. This match is a 5 setter if played on a neutral court.

Trust me, I’m as annoyed about it as you. But Texasstrong says we would never do better than Elliot.

So who are you going to get that you know for 100 % certainty that he or she will do better than Eilliot and win championship’S

Jhenna did an admirable job taking over the setter position....but we need a bigger setter who can LOCATE the ball just like her.

Again, it goes back to floor defense if our block can't stop the opposing hitters.

Jerritt, Erik, and Tonya need to wake the fuck up and start coaching our players up in this aspect of the game.

I’m lost, because I didn’t seeing the obvious deficiencies defensively in this match. And of course BYU is going to have more digs when Texas has almost 20 blocks. I’m not saying the back row defense doesn’t need to improve, I just didn’t see it with this match. The home court in my opinion was the difference.

Illinois hammering Wiscy right now. Up 2 to 1 and rolling in the 4th. They look good... These Big 10 teams don’t make a lot of mistakes and keep everything off the floor. Long rallies. It’s a scrap for every point.

Yeah, BYU is the same way. It’s the reason that I think it’s going to be a long night for Texas.

  18. A tough matchup for Texas playing BYU at home. I think Texas has to be almost flawless to win and I just don’t see that happening. I just don’t think this is a good matchup for Texas.  Also White needs to scrap the jump serve.

  19. Wish it was a better looking win but I’m sure they’ll take. I didn’t watch the match but from reading here it seems the passing was a little better. The serving for this team has obviously become mental like having the yips in golf. Year after year of talking about the same issues with the team is frustrating as a fan. Hopefully Coach Elliott will finally address the SR, ball control, and defense by recruiting better in that area or as some of you have said by hiring new coaches. It’s always been the elephant in the room and it will continue to be  until it some how is eventually addressed.

I agree with your statement that most players come into college with the ability to pass and play defensively.

Mira Topic, Alyson Jennings, Ashley Engle, Heather Kisner, Cat McCoy, and now Sydney Petersen are a few names that I think came in ready to play at the collegiate level (since Jerritt's tenure).

Kiley Hall, Sydney Yogi, Sarah Palmer, Sha'Dare McNeil, Kat Brooks, and Amy Neal are the ones that had the ability but REALLY had to develop and refine those abilities to play at a high level.

If the coaches are not able to develop the passing/ball control/floor defense that's needed to be a consistent Championship-caliber team, then they need to focus on getting players that already have those skills and offer them a scholarship, instead of hoping that these walk-on DS's will develop.

WIth 12 scholarships, I think 2 need to be given to Libero/DS players; 1 definitely for a libero and maybe offer a 2-year deal to a DS player that comes in as a walk-on and if she is the first DS to come off the bench by her JR year, then she earns the other scholarship.  I mean, I would gladly trade-in Orie's scholarship for a DS that could actually be a consistent force in the back row.

I think there is a large pool of  5'8-5'10 High school OHs in Texas with great ball control skills that could transition nicely to a DS role if they were at least offered a 2-year scholarship at Texas. 7

All I bring to it, really, is the perspective of an entitled fan.  Elliott has done a good job overall.  The number of really competitive teams and final four participants has been remarkable.

I was on campus for Haley's great run culminating in the title in 88.

When I started watching again, I kind of assumed that level of dominance had remained consistent over the intervening years.  It hadn't.  Elliott brought it back.

But getting back into it, paying more attention, it does seem that Elliott has a glaring weakness in the way he recruits and coaches defensive specialists and anything that isn't the offensive game at the net.  It has gotten frustrating to watch.  And if we were in a more competitive conference, we probably wouldn't have as many skins on the wall.

And yeah, Sun wanted to be a six-rotation player by all accounts.  One kind of wonders why a player like that would come to play for Elliott in the first place, as his back row coaching deficiencies are known by fans and no doubt exploited by other coaches.  I'm sure that had something to do with, but I have a niggling feeling that she has a Marinovich Dad and the decision was as much his as hers.  He didn't like how much fun she seemed to be having off the court, among other things.

The word Entitled is right, especially if you think  that Texas fans should call Coach Elliott out like you said as if he’s been stinking up the joint like Herman. But I agree with sunset87. IMO it’s about being able to correctly identify quality Liberos/DS. I think that most players that are good defensively/passing come into college with that ability.

There’s only so many ways that you can teach a player how to receive serve. And it’s pretty hard for me to believe that Coaches like Elliott and Sullivan that have not only coached at a high level but also played don’t know what the hell they’re doing in that area. And as far as Lexi Sun is concerned, let’s MOVE ON.
