  1. Almost mint julep season, which is one of my favorite ways to consume bourbon. Four Roses SB does really well in a julep. Buffalo Trace is good as well, although now it's made its way to the allocated/secret society list, maybe not so much any more.

  2. If you have young kids, I highly recommend you skip skiing during holiday season and instead go between mid January and early March. Missing 4-5 days of school before 5th grade is no big deal, and you get uncrowded slopes and no lift lines.

  3. Thinking about getting a new scope for my main smoke pole. Thoughts on Swaro Z5 vs say Leupold vx5hd or a Zeiss conquest? like to keep it around $1200 or so. Thanks in advance Gentlemen.
I bought a Zeiss Conquest v4 last year on big discount. Love it. Combined with the Larue mount on the AR, and it's really solid. Bounced all around the lease this week and it stayed zeroed. fc6170ca54bea9a108ee495eb40f548e.jpg

  4. Poll time:

    1. How old were you when you received (or purchased) your 1st real firearm (whether longarm or handgun, not a pellet or BB gun)?

    2. How old were your kids when... [same as # 1].

    1. 7 years old, bolt action 22 handed down from my dad, and his dad.

    2. 9 years old (girl), same said 22. Going on 4th generation now.

Age isn't really the best judge. IMO, the kid needs to show me they can comfortably handle a BB gun, observing all safety rules (muzzle discipline, etc.). Then move up to 22. Then to a hunting caliber (22-250, 243, etc).
  5. Booked Telluride over spring break for the family.  Staying slopeside at a house in Mountain Village.  We haven't been to Telluride in almost a decade.  Last few trips have been Breckenridge and Vail.  This will be the first time that we're going to drive instead of fly.  Coming that way from Austin area.  Definitely going to break it up into two days of travel both directions.
Any thoughts of the best route?  I'm spitballing here, but I was planning on trying to make it through Big Spring / Roswell to Albuquerque on the way there.  Then, come back through Clovis to Lubbock on the way back.  Trying to front-load the drive to make the second day more manageable in both directions.  Planning on using Marriott points for those hotel stays along the way which is why I'm using Albuquerque and Lubbock as our overnights.  Any other suggestions?
Did this exact itinerary last year from DFW. Stayed in ABQ on the way up, stayed in Lubbock on way back. Lubbock was pushing it a bit, didn't get to hotel until 1 a.m. Amarillo is another option.
  6. Scored a mint condition used Superior safe the other day from a guy moving out of state. It's the Master 40 model, 49 gun capacity.

This thing is a beast, weighs over 1000 lbs. I highly recommend it. Rock solid compared to the cheap cabinets sold at retail stores.

  7. Trying to figure out where to go for our annual group trip this year. The last 4 years have been Telluride, Steam Boat, Park City, Telluride.

One guy has Epic Pass and strongly prefers one of those mountains. We prefer towns where you can stay walking distance to the slopes and walking distance to restaurants and bars.

I’m leaning towards Crested Butte which I’ve done before but our group has not.

Any reason to consider Vail, Beaver Creek, or Breck? They all seem so crowded and commercial.

The answer is no, those places suck.

CB is great as you know. Can't really walk to town from the mountain, but the free bus is nice.

Consider Whistler. Bars are awesome, everything is walkable. Skiing is amazing.
