Is there anyone close to Williamson this year in the Player of the Year race?

thank God Dukie V was not doing that game!

No. Metrics wise, there has been no one close to him this century. Eye test wise the closest to him I can think of is Durant. Davis was a dominant defensive presence but his overall game is no where near Zions.

The Big 8 had a tournament for 20 years, and it always made sense to me to acknowledge both regular season and tournament.

I could see why the current ACC would adopt this model, with the schools not playing round robin, but the fact that's always been this way is weird as hell.

I could be wrong but I think the ACC has had a tournament like 30 or 40 years longer than the Big 8. Big 8 had the old holiday tournament during the christmas break but it was, well, pointless and meant nothing

I also recently learned that the ACC doesn’t award a regular season champion. Never has. The ACC champion is the tournament winner.

Yeah this is very strange to me. But I guess the ACC has had a tournament a lot longer than most conferences.

Self left him a shitload of talent.  After those kids left, he was under .500 in Big Ten play and only got out of the round of 64 once (and lost in the 2nd round).  With his own recruits, he's actually very similar to Shaka but doesn't recruit at a high enough talent level for guys to leave early, and he's a pretty good developer of players...so when an experienced core comes together, he can get seasons like these every few years.

Edit: I think Weber is a good coach that struggles to recruit, I think Shaka in an okay coach in a league with such good coaching that that gets you exposed.

I think your point about Shaka is spot on. He's a decent coach but he just happens to be in a league of superb coaching. As much as we give shit about Weber, he has won the conference twice now, made a deep (if not fluky) run in the tournament last year, and has overall done a good job of developing his players. Scott Drew, another coach everyone loves to shit on, has gotten really good at this coaching thing. He makes much fewer mistakes down in crunch time now and gets the most out of his players. Baylor was picked to finish 9th in the league this year, and they got 4th. This after losing one of their best players. Then you got Lon, Self, Huggins, Dixon, and Beard/Boynton are both young and new but have proven to have some good coaching chops IMO though it is early on both of them. Prohm is kind of the outlier here. Sometimes you think damn, he's really good, and then ISU goes and shits the best for like 5 games in a row and you wonder if Prohm is really good or not.

  5. KU has been awful in true road games this year but actually are undefeated in neutral site games. That being said, all those neutral site games had Doke and Vick in them.

I am unsure how this is going to go. Texas beat us soundly in their house and gave us a game at Allen so, if we manage to get past them and have to play Tech in the semi's that is also another "well shit I dont know how its going to go" as both teams kicked each others ass on their home floors.

If Wade isn't playing in the Conf tournament I can see KSU going out in the Semi's. If he is playing I don't see anyone stopping them until the finals.

There is so much butthurt on phog about Lawson not winning POY

I wouldnt put too much stock into it. Phog turned into a cesspool a while back.

Lawson had a claim  but Culver's team won the conference and he has just as good a claim.

I’ll put it this way, I think Beard is likely a very good coach, but I have a lot of reservations due to only having coached two full seasons at P5 til now. Considering the buyout we will be payjng Shaka, I think we need to hire someone with a longer resume who is more of a known entity. Someone like Buzz Williams would be ideal IMO, but it sounds like there’s no way we could get him. Hoiberg won for four years in a row and with his own recruits in the Big 12. I think he’s much more of a known entity than Beard.

I heard Buzz wasn't happy at VaTech and would likely jump at a chance to go coach in Texas.

Yep. That was the willie warren v. Sherron Collins show. They basically just ran down the court and popped 3s in each other’s face for about a 3 minute stretch. It was pretty ridiculous.

God I remember the game thread on reddit for that, even non-Big 12 fans were like wtf is this game,

One year of postseason play probation and the loss of one scholarship the next year. Boo hoo. I'm sure KU fans were devastated.

They were back in the title game in 1991.

That doesn't mean Larry Brown isn't a cheating piece of shit but all things told that 1988 title was probably worth it. It was their first title in 36 years and just the 2nd in school history.

Would you have taken UT's '05 title for a year of bowl probation and the loss of a few scholarships? That's a no brainer to me...

He gave a kid that didnt even go to Kansas, 364 dollars for a round trip ticket to see his grandmother who raised him and was ill at the time (and she passed away a short time later). He told the NCAA about it, wasn't trying to hide it, then they slapped them with the sanctions. The NCAA did a thorough investigation trying to find a pattern to see if Kansas had been doing that and they never found anything other than what Larry Brown told them he had done.

So Hurts to OU, meanwhile they're trying to block Kendall going to WVU. Stay classy, Sooners.

Apparently they granted the waiver for him to play today.

I give zero shits to see KU's streak end unless and until my team is the one to pull it off.  OSU is still the last team to win the conference outright other than KU. I would take no joy in seeing Tech or ISU or god forbid OU be the one to take them down. Keep at it Bill until Mike Boyton is ready to challenge for the throne.

I've seen this sentiment on reddit from several fans of most of the Big 12. Everyone wants their team to end the streak.

They graduated 38ish seniors this year and only have like 15 scholarships to give. I will take that bet.

Pretty sure we only graduated 22 seniors this year. We do only have 15 scholarships to give though. Next year we graduate 31 seniors though

So, again, is the player ineligible? Without knowing if KU reported it appears that the school is going about this backwards, which to say the least, is odd.

I just read thru the tweets/conversation from the post above and have no clue, as usual. But some seem to think that if KU has self-reported and the player IS ineligible then previous games played come into question along with a streak of BXII championships.

    Does that sound right?

No, Silvio is not ineligible, Self just don't want to play him just in case. Thats why he is asking the NCAA for a ruling one way or another.

    Bought and paid for! ;)

Meh, SDS guardian allegedly took 2500 dollars but there is no evidence of it, just heresay and its clear Silvio had no idea. Let's just say there was 2500 exchanged between the adidas dude and his guardian, past infringements like this required some time to sit out and Silvio has already sat out for a full semester.

Not even required to, Coach Self just didn't want to risk playing him.

In ‘15 we lost in Waco to a ranked Baylor team at the buzzer.  This game feels similar, sans ranked Baylor team.

Another game that would have broken KU’s streak had we won.

Big 12 fans are so melodramatic.

1 loss does not make a conference season. Just like you beating KU AT home as you usually do, does not end our season.

ISU has as good a chance as anyone IMO.

Word is UCLA donors are ready to step it up on the hire.  We shall see.  Names being bandied about- and yes some are pie-in-the-sky but we will at least inquire- Donovan, Bennett, Dixon, Hoiberg, Keatts at N.C. St, Cronin at Cincinnati.   Hire likely not until after the season.  But with Pauley renovated and the new Mo Ostin basketball facility, along with what appears to be fresh donor money (new blood apparently), this could be a bigger hire than people might guess.

Dixon is not likely to leave his alma mater. Hoiberg hated, absolutely hated the recruiting aspect of college ball. Donovan is, IMO, unlikely to return to the NCAA. Bennett has it made in Virginia/ Cronin I could see potentially leaving Cincy for UCLA, Keatts too though.

Only 3 since  the 18 game schedule. Missouri leaving created the 18 game schedule.

No, Missouri's last year was the first year we went to the 18 game schedule. Colorado and Nebraska had left the year prior. But Missouri and aggie were still here and we had 10 teams. Their final conference record was 14-4.

At first I thought you were insane with the 13 win prediction and then I went back and checked.  Since 2010-2011 only 3 teams not named KU have reached 13 wins.  Since going to the 18 game schedule only KSU has gotten to 14 wins and that was in the inaugural season of that schedule (2012-2013).  Shocking because I feel like KU always has around 3 losses and it is always close up to the last couple of games.

With this conference, I can see all of the teams beating up on each other and no one getting any good separation.

    4 teams.

    Missouri (14-4) 2012

    KSU (14-4) and OSU (13-5) in 2013

    WVU (13-5) in 2016
