There are other ways to achieve an improving offense or defense. Most coaches call up friends or study other teams. Barnes studied Utah, Calipari called Barnes for defensive help, Geno Auriemma studied Tex Winter and broke down every game from the Bulls in 1994. He’s obviously switched to the 1-4 as the game changed but the point remains. Most learn from somebody else, not a great assistant hire.

Beilein hired this guy after losing the guy he’d hired the previous year. He flat out admitted he wanted something to work with his offense and he didn’t have the eye for it. So that’s kind of a specific circumstance and it’s pretty impressive for a head coach to admit.

Nevertheless, we need to improve and I don’t care how we do it. DH is on that bench and used to play uptempo as well. Somebody better go learn how to coach this style because nobody on that bench has a background in it. That’s why it’s on Shaka more than any assistant hire to me.

I think there's a bit of a misreading of the cause of our offensive woes. Most think Shaka runs the open lane, freedom based offense because he's a dummy and doesn't know offense. I think he sees this style of read and react offense as a recruiting tool and hopes it will put him in play for a different level of player, especially wrt guards. There's a reason why a great college guard like Bronson Koenig doesn't get the NBA looks that his otherwise illustrious Wisconsin career should've provided him. Bo Ryan's swing offense simply didn't provide Koenig with a lot of opportunities for NBA scouts to see him in an NBA style offense where he's making quick reads off of a ball screen environment. Therefore there's more work required for scouts to project him at the NBA level. Say what you want, but if Roach comes back NBA scouts will have at least 3 year's of tape with him in an offense where the ball is in his hands making quick decisions off of ball screens. Now having said that, I have a problem with Shaka allowing so much freedom for guys who either don't really have a high bball IQ (Roach), are poorly suited to handle it (Osetkowski), or are too young (Coleman) to have consistent success with it. A young team (especially guards) needs more structure and more defined sets. However, the problem isn't that he's dumb and needs someone smarter to come in and help. The problem is he's too stubborn and runs it when we're too  young and possibly have personnel ill suited (not enough high IQ guards) to run it effectively.

  2. It was gonna be kind of hard to ask the guy responsible for signing Andrew Jones to take a demotion. Morrell did a friend a favor in a tight spot. I’m sure promises were made.
I’ll agree with the rest though. In all honesty, he probably needs a better first chair than DH. This thread is gonna suck if he promotes from within.....
Rumor is that Mount St Mary's head coach is in the running.

  3. NBA scouts really love raw athleticism. I think Wigginton is going to be a better player than Zhaire Smith before their careers are done.
This process is always odd. A guy like Zhaire Smith getting all types of NBA hype while Wigginton is getting none.......is weird to me.
Probably has something to do with the fact that one guy is 6'5" while the other guy is 6'1".
  4. A lot of that ball screen read and react stuff is what he'll be expected to do in the NBA. I imagine that's why Shaka runs so much of it now. After watching old games of his at VCU and even his first year here he used run a lot more sets than he has the past 2 years. Even the early season stuff against Butler & Duke had a bit more continuity in the offense.

    CSB time...

The dude that played McCreary was my friend Darren Goldstein.  We worked together bartending when I was first moved to freelance in NYC and he was doing theater here.  Crazy talented - could impersonate anyone right off the bat.

I once saw him and one other actor in a small play off 7th ave. where they would wear a stack of caps with names of characters on them and without looking would pull one off to reveal a different character and jump right into it. They played whole scenes with multiple characters with just two actors.  My jaw was on the floor.

I think his other big role was Limitless.

    /CSB

I believe he's in the Showtime tv show "The Affair" as well.

  6. I can’t find a reason for Kerwin Roach not to go pro. He’s put in a lot of time at Texas and he’s looking at returning to a roster that’s not equipped to even make the Dance; meanwhile Holland, Yancy, Felix, et al are being paid to be full-time basketball players in the G League; so why shouldn’t Roach leave as well? If I were his friend or family member I would definitely advise him to leave.
Next year's draft class looks to be utter garbage.
NBA scouts at the Mickie Ds practices didn't hide their disdain for how bad the class looks to be. Obviously an underwhelming freshmen class translates into a weak draft which opens up room for someone (ie Roach) to Buddy Heild their way into not only a 1st round pick, but making a lottery appearance.
  7. After touring private schools for my then 4 year old one of the things that I realized about a lot of those type of intuitions is that beyond just a great curriculum is that they can help instill confidence in kids at a young age. I was struck by how kids as young as 5 carried themselves and at times were partaking or even leading parts of the tour of their respective schools. As long as the kid is earnest and takes advantage of what they have to offer the opportunities are boundless. It's obvious that Bamba took heed of the opportunities he's had. He's attended fairly elite schools since late elementary and is an extremely polished 19 year old as a result.

I'm torn on Doncic.  I love his game and BB IQ - I just don't know if he's athletic enough to ever be a top 10 player and that his ceiling is Hedo Turkeyglue.

Hedo had a pretty good  career and one absolutely outstanding playoff run during the year Orlando went to the FInals.

  9. I'm guessing we'll play a lot more zone next year. Not only because we'll lack a rim protector, but to prevent Sims from getting in foul trouble. As Derka (the real one) has mentioned Sims is an atrocious man defender. Also without Jones to at least start the year and with Long getting more time than previous backup guards, we'll also be lacking defensively in the back court. I love that halfcourt 1-2-2 or 1-3-1 (or whatever it is) with Sims at the top. That shit looks intimidating.

  10. How many freshmen bigs with polish have we had in the last 20 years? Mihm, Aldridge, Durant (if you count him as  a big), Boddicker (rebounded like a big, but really didnt play inside), Buckman, Tucker (undersized big), Damon James, Myles, Turner, and maybe Tristan Thompson (although I'd argue he was just a bit more refined than Sims, plus he was like a 20 year old freshman).

There is zero logical argument that we should be better next season than we were this season. That is nuts. It is absolutely nuts. All kind of people with “feelings” that we will be better next year, and “feelings” that we won’t miss Mo Bamba next year; that’s called blind, homer optimism- and it’s completely illogical.

Well next year's performance won't take place in a vacuum. Considering the 11 other teams in the conference factor into how we'll perform next season I'm not sure  how one can be so firm in either direction.

    From where things stand today:

    1. KU improve or stay the same

    2. Tech probably step back a bit

    3. WVU probably step back a bit

    4. K St definitely improve (assuming Wade and everyone else returns)

    5. TCU probably step back a bit

    6. Baylor stay the same or step back a bit (losing their PG, 6th man, and Acuil, but giving Drew the benefit of the doubt)

    7. UT ??????

    8. Okla ST improve

    9. OU unless something unforeseen happens (Young inexplicably decides to stay in school) Giant step back

    10 Iowa St Improve tremendously

Not counting us I see 3 teams (Iowa St, Okla St, & K St) that are certain to improve next year with another 4 teams that are taking a definite step back (Tech, WVU, TCU, OU) and 2 wildcards in Baylor and Kansas being Kansas either improving or staying the same. Not sure why it's illogical that we improve somewhat in the standings. If you're talking in the absolute sense I'd guess that whatever steps we fall back on the defensive end will probably be balanced by some improvement on the offensive end wrt to TOs and shooting %.

Don't agree that this season is bad. Not at all.

I thought last night's episode was peculiar, probably a 6/10 from me, and I agree they beat the point too much (we get it, Black men love their barbers, we needed a whole episode for what I'm sure many Black comedians could cover in a 4-minute joke?). But I do enjoy Paperboi/the actor that plays him, and he's the realest character on the show imo, so it was still somewhat enjoyable.

I liked the episode before though. Earn and "his girl" had a real f'n episode that brought out some real issues between them. I've been in that situation, and I'm sure many of us have, but I'm not sure you get both viewpoints (man "doesn't know" what he wants/just wants to fuck and chill, woman wants to fuck but also stability) from a lot of depictions of that situation. It was more character progression to me, further revealing Earn as a normal-ass dude who really could be considered a POS.

i thought it was a fine episode, and i've already been disappointed a couple times this season.  it was very familiar though - reminded me of the episode in s1 in the club where earn kept trying to get paid and got the runaround all night (although that one was better).  black people run away from responsibility.  got it.

Interesting seeing the different conclusions drawn from people watching the show. Here I am watching the show thinking to myself how trifling that barber was. Little did I know that I was actually watching a behavioral documentary on black people.

i think those are best case scenario type comps.

    Definitely

Pat Beverley if he ever gets his ball handling and decision making up to a PG level and Bradley and Allen if he doesn't ever do it, but those are the 3 he should pattern his game after. Although I don't that a total non-shooter like Allen makes it in today's NBA.
