If StL wasn't a "baseball town" it would be a "hockey town".  Born and raised, but a Cardinals guy through and through.  I have so many friends who are completely lit up right now, though.  I'm not entirely sure the city knows what to do.  I don't imagine there will be a lot of couch burning, but maybe a couple of innocent near-suburban black guys will get shot by cops in celebration.

Yep.....what the 'Hull' just happened? The 'Weight' is finally over. I'm in 'Schock'. 'Beers' all week at the 'Barr'.

They're saying the parade will likely be Saturday afternoon. May have to join the fam up there in all the hysteria.

So the world doesn't have Title 9?  Guess what.  A bunch of these countries - including Thailand - don't consider women to be even remotely equal to men.  There are about 500 other things that need to be worked through before you can start worrying about equal soccer pay between men and women in Thailand.

Now if the US does the same thing to France or Sweden, by all means, celebrate.  But we should really tone it down when it comes to countries with a similar makeup to Thailand.

This is really kind of a funny statement. Spent four years in Thailand and, trust me, it's the women that are the more dominant sex over there. Thai men tend to be the subordinates in that culture. Of course, Southeast Asia would much rather watch the men's game than the women's in that soccer crazy part of the world.

In regards to that game, I agree with the celebrating being excessive. That was embarrassing to watch. I played hockey in Japan from the late 90's to 2004 and had a few Canadian teammates that were part of the Japanese National and 1998 Olympic team in Nagano. In 2003 , the Japanese team had to play the Thai national team for the warmup to the Asian Winter Games and beat them 39-0!! You had pro-hockey players taking on guys that had played the game about 5 years. It was absolutely ridiculous to even play that game. Certainly wasn't any celebrating going on in that game. Just go out and take care of business. And in that respect, when you do have two equal teams and a player celebrates a goal with an 8 goal lead, I can assure his head better be on a swivel the rest of the night. Paybacks are a bitch.

I don't know....I just thought the celebrating was a bit over the top.

Is this the first time in professional sports history a pro athlete has shown up at a public event - completely unrelated to his sport - wearing a jersey from his employer?

I can't see Sydney Crosby going to the movies in a Lemieux sweater or Aaron Judge going to the beach in a Reggie Jackson throwback.

  4. Was never a fan until recently when I heard him go off on two topics that I've been saying for a while since moving to the States a few years ago.

1 - The Hero bit - Jesus Effing Christ, Americans! STOP with the military worship! Just because a guy spends three years on a ship serving mashed potatoes does not make him a war hero or deserving of a 'Thank you for your service'. Ugh!

2 - The Michelle bit - Why do Americans make such a big deal out of First Ladies? NO ONE in foreign countries gives a flip about your First Lady.....or who is sleeping with their Prime Minister. Focus more on the elected official and less with the spouse. No one cares.

    Guy is a genius.

  5. James Brown at an old church turned club called The Bowery in Oklahoma City around 1985. I was about 13/14 at the time. Was really into the Godfather of Soul at the time and asked my parents to take me. They thought I was nuts but, to their credit, they did take me.

Can still see the turquoise tuxedos.

I went to Columbus once. F the CBJs.

Why all the hate for Columbus?

Got to admit, I've never been a Jackets fan...…..but went to the Jackets/Bruins game on March 12th in Columbus. Great barn. One of the nicer arenas in the NHL. Great location and part of town. Good crowd. Overall excellent night out and was actually more impressed with Columbus than the earlier game in Pittsburgh. Columbus has a better overall product for the casual or diehard fan than Phoenix, Nashville, Anaheim or Miami.

  7. Kind of a pointless post but I noticed something kind of interesting to me.

I recently got back from a 6-week trip to India, Thailand and Japan. As an NBA fan, I paid particular attention to the black-market NBA jersey shops and NBA fanwear.

I noticed lots of people from China, Thailand, Europe, Australia, etc. wearing NBA stuff. But I only noticed the following jerseys in large numbers...

Jordan, James, Curry, Irving, Harden, Westbrook with some Greek freak, Kobe and Embiid. In the entire 6 weeks, I did not notice one product for Kevin Durant.

How in the world is Durant - arguably the best player in the world right now - playing second fiddle to these other players? When I was working in Thailand in 2014, Durant Thunder jerseys were pretty common in Asia. It's like the guy has taken a big step back despite the rings. What's going on here?

  8. In my opinion, Japan has become easier for tourists than in the past. Tourism is BOOMING.

For example, money exchange places are all over the place. Saw numerous places in Akihabera, Shinjuku, Shibuya, etc. Not long ago, you had to go to the bank to exchange currency.

Service industry jobs like 7-11 and McDonald's have started hiring foreign cashiers. This was unheard of ten years ago. Actually had a nice chat with a Family Mart cashier from Nepal a few days ago. Weird to have a conversation in English with a convenience store employee. One small 7-11 near Wasada University actually had a couple of American college girls working in there.

Also, the lady who owned the Airbnb apartment I used had a device that was just for audio translation. Pretty nifty gadget. Translated really quickly and accurately. Saw a few people using those. Great invention.

  9. And another thing.....if you go to Japan from April to September and DO NOT hit a baseball game, you're doing wrong.

Buy a ticket in the cheering section in the outfield and enjoy the game. I guarantee you'll enjoy the experience.

  10. Just got back from two weeks in Tokyo after a 5 year absence. Good Lord....the city has experienced some serious changes since I lived there from 1997 to 2006.

First of all, tourism has SKYROCKETED! There are gaijin all throughout Shinjuku and Shibuya. When I lived in Tokyo, you could pretty much go to any neighborhood in Kanto (except for Roppongi) and not see gaijin. Seriously, I could go 4 days without seeing a white/black face.

Case in point, the Golden Gai district near Kabukicho. Back in the day, you could stroll through this area at night and only see Japanese people. Went there last week and EVERY PERSON I saw walking around were tourists. Really kind of sad. Tourism is really having an impact on Japan.

Went into a kaiten sushi place in Shibuya, a place I used to go on occasion twenty years ago. Went in last week twice, every person in the place was foreign. Might as well been in California. At the check out, the sign read '4 Stars on Trip Advisor'. Ugh.

So, my recommendation for newer travelers to Japan: try to NOT go where your guide book recommends. Only briefly visit the touristy places and then try quiet, off the path neighborhoods. Roll out to Kanagawa or Izu or someplace and escape the tourists.

  11. Taking a slapshot directly on the bone that sticks out on the outside of your ankle and outside of your knee hurts like a sonbitch. If he took that slapshot directly on the actual collarbone, the pain must have been an incredible bitch. Not a serious injury but a good sting for 5 minutes or so.

This is where I long for Shane Churla

You have to keep in mind, this is the new 2018-19 National Shinny League.

Old school checking and open ice hitting is a thing of the past. You want fights? Might want to hit an ECHL game.

Polak led the Stars this year in PIM's with 69. SIXTY-NINE!!!!

The game isn't what it used to be.

  13. "This chick announcer is seriously the worst I’ve heard since this guy, albeit she is having the time of her life."

    Agreed.

I support the NHL's 'Hockey Is For Everyone' policy and find it pretty cool overall. Went to a game in Los Angeles last year that just happened to be LGBT Pride night. Thought it was pretty lame at first but left the arena with a positive review of the whole experience.

Having said that, I get a kick out of the NHL Network and NBC almost always having a black guy in the studio. I like Anson Carter and liked Ray Emory but it was pretty obvious what was going on there. I've been to NHL games across Canada and America from Calgary to Montreal and LA to Buffalo. You know what I didn't see in any of those arenas? Black folks. Black people don't like hockey. I played the game for 28 years. One black teammate. My wife is black. Her and non of her family have any interest in the game. My FIL thinks it's a silly game.

Why not put a Swede in the studio? There's tons in the game and they speak better English than Texans. How bout a Russian? The NHL has a case of the PC's.
