What I love about Surly is that, despite the front that this is a bunch of amoralistic shitheads, the most intelligent "fan" discussions of Texas sports happens here. Like, it's possible to have differing opinions, and we at least try to get past the veneer of blind homerism for our team. We don't (generally) dogpile the fans of opposing teams if they bring something to the discussion. And if you say ignorant things like "ketch thinks" you're sent packing. In summary, fuck all of you.

I agree - I love this place for what it is - but Surly is also prone to groupthink and runaway narratives.  All in all I'd rather exist in a place like Surly than Bobby's ultra sanitized board, but he does have a point.  The big idea, as expressed above, is that the two places can (and should) be viewed as complementary.

Bobby with a story on Worthy on OTF

As many of you know, Xavier Worthy had the drops in the latter half 2022. Well, I was the first media person to tell folks after the season that he had a broken hand during that time frame. Texas did not want the news out lest it change how some opponents defended them.

Some said that the injury was fake - merely an excuse for Worthy having the drops. But facts are Worthy was wearing a soft cast most of the second half of that season, not just around the facility but also to class, etc.

But this part is where I think things get interesting, and also reveal a little more about who Worthy truly is.

So, let's talk about how the injury actually occurred.

Worthy was so pissed after a game that season, one where he actually had a good game but the team lost, that he punched a locker in the locker room.

No, not the smartest move he's ever made. You could even call it immature.

But this is where many fans got the notion of who Worthy is wrong.

Anyone who ever second guessed him as a prima donna who only cared about stats, etc., it kind of speaks to a different level of intent that not many people were aware he has. He's intensely competitive. Winning means a lot to him.

Now, Worthy is not the perfect receiver. He's relatively thin. He has good hands, but not great ones. He wasn't always the easiest to deal with off the field.

But when you talk to people who have coached him or played with him, to a man they all talk about how hard he goes in practice. There's never any doubt about what he was out there to do when he steps on to a football field, for a practice or a game.

He was out there to get better and to win.

    So congrats to Xavier.

I truly believe he became a better player at Texas and I also think he matured greatly along the way. Last night was culmination of many things coming to fruition in the best way possible.

'16 was only 1 half and was a bad omen to start the season (not that Chuck needed any help.) Shit sucked all the way around. Only bright spot, which later proved to be wish casting, was Shane's deep ball.

I thought it was pizza? Chicken fingers wouldn't have been nearly as infuriating but not sure it would've mattered. Roach was MLB for Christ's sake...

Still no Zeynalova today against Tech. At this point, I’ll just assume she’s done for the year. but it’s very odd seeing her walk around like normal with no visible injury. Could be mental health related who knows. Regardless, any outside chance of winning the championship is gone without her in the lineup.

The pressure is really on OKST to win it all this year because not only does OKST host the Big12 tournament, they also will host the quarterfinals, Semi finals, and finals of the NCAA tournament. If they can’t win the championship this season, it would be a major disappointment.

    it's an injury

They all play such different roles.  Jones is obviously your very traditional 5 - she's going to struggle if she has to guard out to the 3 point line, but she's so reliable when she catches the ball high - 60% FG for a reason.  She's also the team's leading rebounder, so the more she can play, the better chances we have of winning.

Gaston is more mobile and athletic and plays a lot bigger than her 6'2 height.  My worry with her is she gets frustrated easily, but she is a high energy player off the bench and she does have more of an ability to guard away from the basket and her offensive rebounding is insanely good. She can also score away from the basket more than Jones.

Faye is also a good rebounder and defender, but she's severely limited away from the basket.  There's a reason she only averages about 12 minutes a game.

Faye and Gaston are much better FT shooters than Jones.

Muhammad is a mystery - she's 6'4, so she can play inside, but she's better at the 4.  She's a good rebounder, but not the best finisher.   And her FT shooting is atrocious.  She's also been turnover prone this year.

appreciate the breakdown - would you say Faye is more in the traditional 5 role like Jones, comparable on defense but more limited on offense?

Moral of the story: Texas needs to run the Zags off the three point line, dominate the boards, HIT THEIR FUCKING LAYUPS and keep Gonzaga under 60-65 points and we are likely still dancing into Sunday.

Gonzaga will have trouble with Booker's size, Holle will be stuck like glue to their best offensive guard and Texas can rotate bigs and fresh bodies with Jones, Gaston, Muhammad, Moore and Faye.  Texas will and should run some zone with Jak because of her length to frustrate the Gonzaga guards.  Minimize live ball turnovers that lead to transition threes.  Do not press - go back and set your defense after a made basket so they can't find an open shooter early in the shot clock

I'm curious for your perspective on bigs depth - how much of a gap do you see among Jones/Gaston/Faye/Muhammad?

  8. Matt Miller's 7 round mock is very Texas friendly - 8 of the first 84 picks, 9 picks overall:

    15. Murphy - Indianapolis

    28. Mitchell - Buffalo

    32. Worthy - Kansas City

    54. Sweat - Cleveland

    56. Brooks - Dallas

    69. Sanders - LA Chargers

    81. Ford - Seattle

    84. Jones - Pittsburgh

    240. Whittington - Carolina

I can see that, based on that picture. I am mostly going off Sark’s comments. He was quite polite in his press conference mentioning Red, Blackshire, and Sydir’s weight, but I would bet the conversations with those players was a bit more elevated behind closed doors

Blackshire might be too heavy, but it isn't because he is fat.

I know we have discussed this stuff before, but some/a lot of the posters on the guru boards are special forms of stupid. I know Surly has its share of complete imbeciles, but wow. I haven't read 247, IT, or OB in forever and a day, so you forget about this stuff. On OTF now and some of it is unbelievable.

There's the one type of poster who views any opinion other than that coming from a $9.95er as completely ignorable while at the same time hanging on a $9.95er's every word. You can forget about this, but when seeing it unfold in real time, it's a stark reminder of the outsized kind of weight the paid guys carry. That's hard to do with someone weighing close to a metric ton, such as Ketchum, but it's real. There are thousands of readers who think that Ketchum/Boyd/Nahlin/Richardson/FCB/Bohls/Golden are providing them with real insights about the program or recruiting.

My personal favorite example of this was in fall camp 2 years ago.  After one particular practice, Anwar reported that Agiye Hall had a great practice and was turning heads with his athleticism.  I remember reading that - knowing that Hall had left practice about 15 minutes in never returned - and realizing just how much of the "reporting" is total conjecture and taking calculated shots in the dark.
