An interesting note from the report.  That diesel and single prop/screw apparently are direct drive because it notes that to reverse, the engine must be stopped and restarted.

I'm not a marine engineer, but stopping and restarting one of those gigantic marine diesels is a non-trivial endeavor.

Many other vessels use reduction gearing that includes a reverse gear.

I think this means that this vessel effectively had no practical means to reverse itself, or to steer sharply by reversing some engines.  The thruster(s) in the bow may obviate that to some degree, but not completely, and that of course requires pretty much full electrical power.

I guess the anchor drop brake needed manual release or power as well and even though they started dropping it 2 mins before they hit the bridge it wasn't down and catching or didn't catch enough to stop them.

Interestingly enough, I grew up going to Galveston-area beaches, and every house had bottles of rubbing alcohol to remove the frequent tar stains.  And over the past 20 years, we grew up taking our kids down to the Texas coast, and when my daughter was maybe 10, she spotted a small spot on her foot -- "what is that?"  Oh, it's a little tar stain.  She freaked, we laughed - told her it was a regular thing when we were kids.

The Oil Pollution Act back in the 70s really DID make a big difference.

Also, I fished more than a time or two at Seawolf Park back in the day.  My daughter hooked a massive black drum on her little Barbie fishing rod setup one time down there.....it was not up to the task.

Yeah even when I was a kid in the 90s there was way more out there, always finding chunks on the beach.

I found a few after that deepwater horizon spill but not really bad at all.

Haven't had too much bad shit in Galveston in quite a while, not even another big seaweed die off like we had a few years ago that caught up a bunch of little fish that died and stunk up the beach.

Loomer said Twitter informed her she was banned for violating rules against hateful statements after she posted that Minnesota Representative-elect Ilhan Omar was "anti Jewish." Loomer's tweet, one of many that she had posted criticizing Omar and other prominent Muslim figures, said the incoming congresswoman was part of a faith in which "homosexuals are oppressed" and "women are abused."

If there’s an oil spill in Galveston can anyone even tell?  The answer is no evidently.

It's all fun and games until you are picking tar balls off your surfboard and your kids feet.

It’s so weird how the same psychotic idiots keep showing up in DT threads, spouting conspiracy theories, get roundly rejected and mocked, and then show up again in similar threads. Fuck you internet, fuck you.

Well, I'm pretty sure its in the news... quick Google search below.  Also, maybe it was a cyber attack, maybe it wasn't.  Let the smart people sort it out.  The investigators don't have to tell us everything.

Maybe that's your clue that it may not have been a cyber attack if they didn't rush out immediately?  I don't know.

It’s not a cyber attack because they waited three weeks to investigate if it was a cyber attack?

4 people were killed on the bridge. Somebody either fucked up big time and is criminally negligent or there is a criminal actor overseas that did this.

    https://www.seatrade-maritime.com/casualty/what-dalis-black-box-recorder-tells-us-about-baltimore-bridge-allision

Black Box stopped recording for a minute

How is that even possible? Shouldn’t that be on separate dedicated backup power?

01.24:59 - Numerous audible alarms recorded on bridge audio. VDR sensor data ceased recording, VDR audio recording continued on backup power source.

No shit!!!  You mean they're going to examine it from all angles?  Jesus Tapdancing Christ my man.

Yeah it took 3 weeks for the FBI to get there and start to do a criminal investigation. What the fuck were they waiting on is my question.

Probably a multibillion dollar infrastructure and shipping hit. No federal investigators for 3 weeks?

It’s not outrage it’s maybe just wondering why the fuck this huge billion dollar infrastructure disruption isn’t in the news or being followed up on at all. I’m an engineer so things like bridges collapsing get my attention more than others I guess. Also I don’t think it was an accident I think it was a cyber attack but of course nobody is saying anything one way or the other….. will they ever?

You understand they live on the ship, right? They get resupplied if needed. I've been out to sea above the Arctic Circle longer than 2 months. Sitting in Baltimore would have been fuckin great by comparison.

The investigation began the next day. Not sure when what department joined/launched their own. NTSB moves slow, but they usually get it right.

Crew being confined to the ship isn't unusual.

For 2 months on a fucked up ship with no communication out?

Where is the findings from the investigation? I guess since they didn’t even start an investigation for a month it’s only been a month of investigation but damn. Not a peep
