Probably time for us to have a thread/discussion on this topic as things get worse and worse.

I'm late 40s, would be described as very liberal by others. I haven't consumed any news from TV in 4-5 years. No CNN, No Fox, no local news, none of it. For the last 10-15 years I've used Twitter as a news feed and followed verified journalists to consume info (as well as general entertainment/sports/comedic accounts) That includes people like Glenn Greenwald, who I don't like and generally don't agree with, but I want to be challenged with viewpoints and don't want to get stuck in an echo chamber.

Since Elon purchased Twitter and boosted the idea of "citizen" journalism, the app has become almost unusable. It's also where the vast majority of this bullshit "journalism" is being published. Trying to get genuine info on the protests going on right now around the country is practically impossible. Here are the biggest issues IMO.

    1. Elon Musk - This guy is simply a dumbass regarding anything outside of technology. Allowing anyone to be verified on Twitter was a massive error.

    2. Monetization on Twitter - Fatal mistake and the complete downfall of the app. People will do and say anything to make money. Bot impressions also boost these disingenuous posts.

    3. Engagement farming - Someone posts a video, then 100s of other accounts take the video and post it themselves to make money and grab more engagement. They flood the zone.

    4. The algorithm - Holy shit, it's dangerous.

Are real journalists perfect? Of course not. Lots of issues with classic media. But putting reporting it into the hands of "the people", who mostly have no ethical/moral standards and see a massive opportunity to gain popularity and money, is an absolute disaster.

After Xwitter was Elon'd, I stopped following Elon but that didn't work since half of the people on there retweet his crap; so the second step was to get off Xwitter myself.
Best thing I ever did, about once a month I'll get on and look at what a few accounts have posted - but I think whatever I am missing out on is much less than dealing with all the crap that is on it.
Anyway, I use Surly Daily New & 6th Street as a news aggregator  - if it is important it will be here

I was on a different forum where a guy was trying to argue that some on the left aren't going to vote for Biden because they blame him for Roe v Wade going away. Yes, it's his fault Trump appointed justices voted to repeal Roe. I decided it was time to not engage with that forum any longer.

And he hasn't delivered student debt forgiveness to all, I think that drove a large number of young voters (I have a few in my family). Sure he as tried to piecmeal it but that hasn't been what he promised.
I've heard there is weakening support in minorities (gender and race); again the young voters on campus seem to be the backbone of the Palestinian support which is a strike against.

The shift doesn't have to be that great, if MI/Penn/GA - that flips 50 electoral college votes, and that would take less than a million voters to not show up. I am truly afraid of that type of outcome.

  3. I have been debating updating this  - but I'll do it by answering this

It likely won’t be up to Sparty, but their insurance carrier.  The costs could very easily get into the hundreds of millions.

With the Feds (DOJ/FBI) settling a week or two ago, the claims settlements have crossed the $billion threshold as quickly summarized below
    MSU $500 million
    USA gymnastics/US Olympic committee - $380 million
    DOJ (FBI) - $138.7 million

It is amazing that so many people, in so many organizations knew, and didn't want to rock the boat or just couldn't believe that someone with Nassar's credentials was that bad. Nothing could be more true than the saying "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph in the world is that good people do nothing - Edmund Burke"

A billion - and when the ugliness was finally examined under a bright light it showed that all of these organizations had deep issues within their corporate governance, compliance and reporting structures. With people, or groups of  people, mostly worried about their institutions, reputations. I hope that the victims can find a way to move forward with their lives, sure the money helps, and because it was a large group to support each other.
But I will never forget the story of what is believed to be the first victim, or the first victim that told others. It was a neighbor girl who babysat for the Nassar's, and he abused her in his basement. She told her father, and he did not believe her; she continued to babysit as she thought she was protecting his kids. And when it all came out, her dad took his own life because of the demons he had from missing his chance.

There is only 1 more post to come, and I hope that ends this thread and it can be closed forever.

  4. GERN earnings call on 5/2, coverage started today by Cowen with a buy rating and target of $10.

    Quote

Analysts at TD Cowen began coverage on shares of Geron (NASDAQ:GERN - Get Free Report) in a note issued to investors on Monday, Briefing.com reports. The firm set a "buy" rating and a $10.00 price target on the biopharmaceutical company's stock. TD Cowen's price target would suggest a potential upside of 163.85% from the stock's previous close.

We flew maxes to Nola and back last week.  Me and the wife were talking about how all that extra leg room might be worth the possibility of an engine or window falling off.

It is good to hear that, as Mrs Fairway and I have a couple of trips this year and by luck they are both 737-8 or -9 Max, but we've checked and our life insurance is paid up for the year. So we have that going for us.

I don’t agree with this oft used argument.

    Value is value.

I don't know how to break the news - but nothing only goes up, buy the rumor/sell the news, so up 25% YTD, 113% 1 year, 147% 3 years and you are worried about the negative reaction to an earnings report.
This stuff happens all the time, and eventually to most companies, is your concern that it is more than a blip on the path forward? If so sell some, or buy puts (as a hedge), or sell some OTM calls to generate some premiums from your holdings.

note - my comments are based on interpreting your comments as if they relate to Facebook specifically and not the broader market (like S&P 500); I get that it is easy to get nervous. If you want more safety, you can still get 5%+ on cd's and there is no harm in that.

  7. Worst event of the entire season for the PGA tour - Zurich Team event, 2 man teams playing alternating shot and best ball (or as they call it in the Ryder Cup four-ball and foursomes). News flash for Jay and his money team, #NobodyCares

sidebet  - which set of brothers has the best finish
    Fitzpatricks/Hojgaards/Coody's
also to Kuchar & Stricker get to play from the Sr tees

Dude, wait until you find out about Grandkids. They are gods gift to you for not killing your kids.

You don't have the day-to-day with and  responsibility and financial commitment; but you can have as much of that as you want. And they are cute, loving and when they misbehave it is the parents job to work that out.

Disclaimer - my oldest grand is not yet 10, but I can tell that by the time they are teens the while dynamic I describe will change

These ying yangs (UUUU) are doing the opposite of unlocking shareholder value in the short term and I’m as unhappy as anyone else with that.  Having said that, UUUU is working to develop a supply chain of monazite to make rare earths and today’s announced purchase of Base Resources is to establish more rare earth supply.  UUUU is targeting 1000 tons of neodymium and praesodyium production at their plant.  This is a big deal because our country does not want to have to rely on China for these rare earths.  Indeed, UUUU is working to see if the US government will help them pay for some of this under our government’s critical materials programs.    In regards to uranium, UUUU has restarted their uranium mines and it takes a bit for those costs to turn into earnings.  I don’t blame you if you want to jettison the stock, but I’m continuing to hold it with hopes of a large payoff down the line.

I would add that UUUU  has no debt, $1.57/sh in cash,  actually, has positive earnings, and is investing to grow. I like all that.

Dilution of existing shareholders - either to Mgmt, VC, or other deities is a trademark of Stonks. Moose out front should have told you.

So far Scottie's only won tournaments between February-April.

So you are saying don't bet on him to win the PGA in May, I might just risk it anyway

  11. Scottie wins again, it will be interesting to see how having that first kid affects his game. Ted Scott  is a much wealthier man after April.

Also, Miles Russell, the 15 year HS freshman playing in the Korn Ferry event makes the cut and finishes T20 (68, 66, 70, 66 for -14) & like Scottie he bogeyed the last hole. Now back to algebra, english lit, and cafeteria lunches.

    Did Meredith go into labor?
Because that is the only thing that is stopping Scottie from picking up another winners check.

I was wrong, apparently the weather can also stop him from picking up a winners check (hoping just delays it, but if that baby conspires with mother nature)

  14. So I am reading articles saying Trump is angered/pissed that the judge is rushing the hush money trial; given enough time I think Trump would admit he needs more time to prepare & to pay hush money to potential witnesses.
The theatrics are amazing....but not surprising

? - is Trump really wanting to go to trial on Federal charges, maybe plead down to some lesser charges or plead nolo contendre, all while believing will be able to pardon himself when he is sworn in again as Prez?

  15. I need to go back and read the pages I skipped (2-14). but 1 page in and I'm wanting to start a "Free Derka" movement. Because the board is just better with him on it. Dude is okay, quiirky but bleeds UT sports  and you knew whatever he was typing was his honest perspective.

Good luck SO/DD - go horns

(disclaimer - hoping that this doesn't get me on the wrong side of Imma )
