I will definitely take you at your word since I haven't had them at that stage.  This tends to be true with a lot of food.  Brisket is best within minutes of its being sliced.  That burger doesn't improve between the moment they hand it to me in the bag and the time I get it home.  Krispy Kreme seems to have a lot smaller window than just about any other doughnut someone has left out on the break room table at my office or most other foods for that matter.  And since doughnuts are things people tend to buy more than one of to feed small groups, I'd tend to lean toward the shop that makes something that isn't going to taste like sawdust within x minutes of coming off the line.  Again, I'm not saying they aren't great in that moment.  And not being a doughnut person, I tend not to be the one that goes to pick up the doughnuts.  So I need something with a little bit of staying power.

We tend to grab a bunch of pigs in the blanket on the doughnut shop runs we do make.  And there are a handful of mom & pop Asian operated places that really get those right, at least in these parts.

Can confirm.  Tyler has some legit donut places.

And Ruth’s Chris is another good one. I get the idea of putting butter on a steak. I don’t think it needs it, but I get it. But their steak is nothing special and it comes drowning in butter. Same with the vegetable side. I don’t know, the only time I went there was in Raleigh, NC. Maybe that has something to do with it but I was thoroughly unimpressed.

I find that Ruth's Chris quality varies based on location.  The best Ruth's Chris is in Vegas in my opinion.  The one in New Orleans is a close second.  The one in Houston is awful.

  3. Heading into town with my son next weekend for the game. I haven’t been to Austin in about 7 years (busy, work, etc.)

Be there around 10:30, going to the game, going to breakfast the next morning and then heading out. Suggestions? Doesn’t necessarily have to be bbq but wouldn’t mind.

Also, any good breakfast places in south Austin anyone would recommend?

Cross posted from WSM thread. I'm pretty pleased with how this turned out. Strayed from my usual methods and may have landed on new methods.

I used the John Lewis rub with Lawry's and SPG (ratio: 3/3/8/1) but added a little cayenne (1/3 pt) and still am firmly team "no binder."  I also rendered the better part of the trimmings on the stove (thought doing it on the smoker was a little too smokey last time), and put little pats of tallow on the brisket when I pulled it to rest.  I resisted when it was a Franklin rumor, but Goldee's was doing it in that video; who am I to refuse. Sliced it up after a 2 hour rest.

225F until I wrapped at 165. Then 250--260 until done (pulled at 205).

There aren't many workouts that will wipe out the caloric intake of a daily regimen of two liters of Dr. Pepper and sweet tea. The cycling probably helped but ditching the daily sugar IVs was the primary contributor to your weight loss. Too many missing variables (BMR, TDEE, previous caloric intake, etc...) to really know but I am pretty sure eliminating 900 or so calories a day was the primary reason you lost weight and would have happened without the Peloton.

This.  Diet is 90% of weight loss.  When I say "diet", I don't mean just short-term elimination of certain foods.  It's altering your lifestyle to not intake those items on a regular basis.

  6. Didn't realize there was a thread devoted to this.  I'm checking in here.

Ultimate goal is to build up to a 70.3.  Aiming for 2024.  I've been running the last few years and am doing my first half marathon in January.  Recently got a road bike (Trek) from a buddy at work and enjoy the riding portion.  Goal for 2023 will be to learn how to properly swim and complete my first olympic tri.

    1) Ousux--- because their roster is basically made of Texas high school talent...  by default they are Texan and part of the state

    2) Baylor- many of the reasons listed

    3) aggy-   I really don't hate them as much as I hate ousux and Arky.     I have relatives and close friends that went to aggy, so it's really hard to hate them on a personal level.   I just get sick and tired of them making such a big deal about their traditions when the record is more L's and W's as far as overall seasons go.  In other words a lot of hat and no cattle.

    4)  Tech-  we will probably see why this Saturday

    5) SMU-  bunch of rich spoiled brats.

    The fuck they are.

Everybody should attend an Aggie game at Kyle or on the road. It's exactly as described, unique (special is redundant). It's a time capsule from the 1930s and even their band is worth a watch. The underpinnings of all of that are ridiculous and the place a cult center, but it's an experience that shouldn't be missed if you have the opportunity.

I wouldn't want to see them regularly because hard core Aggies are unbearable. They'll ruin what you've observed by explaining how great it is while using the word "traditions" about a thousand times. You'll realize that they're oddly, unjustifiably condescending. Even their front of aggressive friendliness is Stepfordesque.

I went in 2009 when I was a student at UT and watched Colt McCoy run up and down that field.  My wife (girlfriend at the time who is a "2%er") got us tickets.  They're a weird bunch of people.  She enjoyed the game but hates football but enjoys watching when UT and A&M play around thanksgiving.

  9. If a defender hits a runner or receiver really hard nowadays, the refs will call targeting and review it automatically. It doesn’t matter if it was targeting or not. Complete bullshit and pussification of college football.
