I understand and generally agree with the sentiments in this post. That said, I do think being dismissive of the "conspiracy theory" that the guy was set up is hasty. Whatever side of the political spectrum anyone trends, pause has to be given these days to dismissing damned near anything immediately. How many Onion and Babylon Bee headlines over the last decade have then ultimately proven true or become true later? I know someone was tracking them at some point and both had hit rates in the double digits, which is disturbing to me.

Case in point here, the female was a UU student, right? Now that he's being suspended and subsequently preparing to transfer, she withdraws the case, which was not a criminal case at any point. It's still farfetched as a set-up but it just got closer to not being totally unbelievable. I'm assuming that, what it really is, is an ex that got pissed off for some reason and knew that this would hurt the guy substantially. Anything benefitting or harming a school was likely a complete nonfactor in her decision-making and she wasn't put up to it by anyone else. Probably. Right?

I'm not on the conspiracy theory train with this one, but I also don't totally rule it out. There are some odd things here. The night in question happened in Nov 2023. Five days later the girl calls the police, but won't name who. She had a rape kit examination done, also days later than the incident. Police close the case because the girl won't name the person and she appears not wanting to take it forward. Her description of the evening is weird, too. Then, one and a half years later this surfaces out of nowhere and is a civil suit (no criminal charges). What's with that timing? Same time as when Jake Retzlaff is going into his final year making big money. It's done after the portal closes, doing maximum damage to Jake. Now that Jake's life and career are blown up the suit was dropped. Was the process the punishment? (Or, maybe its part of Globalize the Intifada?)

I don't know what to think. It's not clear that Jake is guilty or innocent.

As far as the honor code goes, BYU has changed its approach since the Brandon Davies incident. They try to figure things out privately and more compassionately/leniently than before. With this matter involving rape allegations and then Jake admitting that they were together that night, that changed the dynamic. BYU can't be seen going soft on possible sexual assault when there is enough evidence that something may have indeed happened.

    It's sucky for all involved.

Was looking forward to a special year in football. Now we have a big question mark at QB.

i agree with everything else you said, but i really do miss growing up and watching the same group of guys grow and develop together. i’ll always miss that.

that said, watching teams grow and jell over a period of years hasn’t been a thing for like a decade anyway (the last team i felt that way about was the felix, holland, ibeh, lammert, taylor, yancy team), so i’ve already had to get over that anyway. so yeah, im with you. it’s not only what right and fair for the players, but it’s also going to make for some great ncaa tournaments full of stacked teams packing every S16 and beyond. it’s undoubtedly a positive paradigm shift, even if it still needs some tweaking.

I do and will miss developing guys in your own system and then watching them become what you hoped, but now that BYU is actually a major player in the new system I'm having way more fun than ever being in the mix. We actually benefit from paying players being out in the open now, rather than the under the table stuff of yesteryear, as we have money and are willing to spend it when it's all above board.

Also, Kevin Young arrived from the NBA with no college coaching under the old ways baggage. He's used to the money and mercenary ways of the NBA. He came in and immediately put a system and coaches in place to deal with new environment. His older brother, Justin Young, who is director of recruiting spent two decades in recruiting and media, primarily focused on high school and college basketball. He was the co-owner and editor-in-chief of HoopSeen.com. Prior to that, he worked for Rivals.com and Yahoo! Sports, serving as the national basketball editor and a contributing editor, respectively. All that guy does is monitor for talent and gems. I imagine lots of college coaches used to the old system really struggling to adapt to this new world (like Baylor losing every single player and having to rebuild a whole roster in one offseason!).

It's a new era for BYU when players are leaving BYU for Georgia and Virginia to get more playing time. I do miss things about the old ways, but BYU is benefitting far more in the new world. I imagine this annoys traditional bluebloods that didn't have to worry about the likes of BYU before and deal with another competitor for talent. Going forward, I expect us to make the stacked group of S16 every year. I'm lovin it.

Reputable sources have claimed that they paid $5 million for AJ Dybantsa so I think I probably believe it

What I have heard is that BYU NIL + Nike + Red Bull is around $7M for AJ.

You're gonna see a lot of this. BYU just paid $3.5m for one of Baylor's players.

Allegedly. Haven't seen this number from a reputable source, yet.

Big 12 hoops gonna be nasty next season tho.

John Calipari gets a lot of grief for leaving some meat one the bone, but over the last 10 years, Duke has not won a national championship despite having:

    – 36 5-stars

    – 28 McDonald's All-Americans

    – 18 first round picks

    – 9 top-5 prospects

    – 8 lottery picks

    – 7 top-10 prospects

    – 3 No. 1 prospects

    – 2 No. 1 overall NBA Draft picks

they’re the biggest team in the country, they have the best player in the country, they shoot lights out, they defend like crazy, they beat the shit out of everybody- they are an absolutely dominant team, and i honestly can’t see anyone other than florida taking them out, and even then, im favoring duke.

    look at this shit:

    IMG_7583.thumb.jpeg.9480c8fe0de68d1df3bd50d9146d117c.jpeg

they’re top 5 in both offense and defense (only florida (1o/10d) is currently also top 10 in both); they’re the fifth best team in the country at scoring, and the best team in the country at stopping you from scoring; they’re top 20 in 3p shooting and 22nd in 3 point defense; they’re sixth in two point shooting and third in two point defense; they also shoot lights out from the line, and they don’t turn the ball over. i haven’t seen a team like this in years. 2025 duke is a truly dominant team.

Duke is a juggernaut and I can easily see them winning it all. They have some big challenges ahead, tho. If they get past Arizona, they will face Alabama or BYU, both high-powered offenses. BYU can match up with Duke height-wise, too. Our starting center is only 6'8", but the guy is a unit/freak athlete with a 7'4" wingspan and 40" vertical. Our starting PG is 6'9" and a potential lottery pick. The rest of our starters are 6'5"-6'7". Only Houston's defense has been able to stop us.

I picked Duke to beat BYU in my bracket, but I am hoping BYU get's a shot at Duke on Saturday.

I think wvu will go after Calhoun of Utah state. He coached there with huggy bear. First year at Utah state, had to bring in 9 new guys, and got them to the tourney.

I have to give it to Utah State, they seem to consistently hit on their bball coaching hires. Just can't keep em there.

And UNC’s A.D. who was/is the head of the committee, but “left the room while North Carolina was being discussed”…

Because those other guys knew that it would be totally fine if they voted their leader’s team out of the tournament and there would be no hard feelings when he came back in the room, but they thought that despite a shitty record against decent teams, UNC definitely deserved to be in on its own merit

    🙄

And the UNC AD got a $100K bonus if UNC got in. "Hey boys, steak dinner's on me if UNC makes it in -- wink wink -- see you in a minute..."

  9. Major respect to Iowa State. You should go far in the tournament. Do not want to play you again this year. Your starting backcourt out today gave Jones a stage to shine and he did.

Houston is the only team to destroy us this year. Our rematch tomorrow will be a good measuring stick for how far BYU has come this year.

Getting blown out by a sub .500 team in front of friends and family.  Yeesh.

You lose tonight that's going to make our game with you next week extra interesting.

  11. The AZ player bodied and hip checked Saunders. It was a mild foul, but it was a foul, and it threw off his shot. There were several weak / non-existent fouls called against BYU leading up to that, and overall AZ was at the free throw line a lot more than BYU. Let's talk about the refs bailing out AZ many times before that final foul.
