Paul Wadlington made an interesting observation on his latest EGAT podcast. (He apparently wrote an article about it on IT if you have a subscription). His point was that not only was Notre Dame not in the top 10 programs of viewership for their games (where Texas was #2) but of the top 50 rated games this year, Notre Dame played in 2 of them. Even their game against Pitt where Gameday went to the Pitt campus didn’t crack the top 50, and neither did their traditional blue blood game against USC.
If the Big 10 and SEC stop scheduling them, what value do they bring to networks and at what point does NBC cancel/fail to renew that exclusive contract?

We don’t have a big money donor like Tech has, but ASU should never finish worse than 2nd or 3rd each season in this conference if our QB, whoever that is each season, stays healthy. We’re the only school in the entire conference located in an area people actually want to live in. Overall the conference is just a mess though when you have one school being bankrolled to relevance with 12 or 13 schools that will never be able to compete financially. I’m glad ASU has the best coach in the conference, by far, but he’ll still need some financial backing to make it work every season.
Everything you said after "We don’t have a big money donor like Tech has" is wrong. Others have addressed the location comment. BYU can compete financially. When we extended Kalani we gave a commitment to provide even more NIL money. I have heard there are at least a half-dozen billionaires actively supporting BYU sports, 60+ in the 500 million plus range (includes the Crumbl guy), and lots in the lower hundreds of millions and tens of millions. We will have enough to compete in the Big 12 and beyond. There's a lot of money in Phoenix. I am surprised you don't have lots of big money donors.
Best coach in the conference by far? Wut? Dillingham is a good coach and made ASU relevant which is indeed an accomplishment, but Kalani just won B12 coach of the year, Joey McGuire is a heck of a coach, Frost is going to have UCF salty soon, Whittingham is no slouch, Brennan did a nice job this year, what Campbell did at Iowa State was impressive although he's gone now, Henderson at UH has created a competitive team despite obstacles. I expect ASU to be competitive and in the upper half of the conference every year, but c'mon man have some perspective on the other talented coaches in the conference.

The only way to incentive Texas to play OSU and similar big time OOC matchups in the future is to expand the playoff field where even the best 3 loss teams have a chance to get in the playoff.

@Crockett what's the word from deseret?
you might get more publicity joining domer in not playing each other than you will from playing a bowl
We feel jobbed by the CFP committee, but they have been telegraphing this move for weeks so we expected it. We were not shocked like ND. Even still we feel like every year we are taking a step forward. First year in P4 was rough (5-7). Y2 we were 11-2 and almost made the CCG and the CFP. Y3 we were 11-1, made the CCG, and just barely missed the CFP. We also just signed our highest rated recruiting class ever (#21), locked in our head coach, and have increased commitments for NIL. We are ascendant and the future looks bright.
Kalani is taking the high road and saying all the right things and showing respect for Georgia Tech. We all wanted to play ND, show we are better than them, and show we deserved to be in the CFP. We want to take our righteous anger out on our next opponent like we did to Colorado last year after getting snubbed by the CFP.
We mostly think ND is acting like cowards (they knew they would be playing BYU and decline) and crybabies. They are throwing a fit.
Some history. We had a 6 game contract during independence with ND. It was a 2-for-1 home/away balance. When they made a deal with the ACC that complicated the series and delayed it. We had played 2 games in Bend and we were trying to get the game in Provo scheduled. They wouldn't fulfill their agreement and refused to come to Provo. We ended up playing a neutral in Vegas to close out the shortened deal. We see it as another bitchass move on their part, just like the refusal to play us again this year. A lot of BYU fans are sick of their antics.

Their resume is CURRENTLY better than ND.
ESPN willingly left that info off their chart last night
tOSU/Indy - both teams in win or lose
UGA/Bama - both teams in win or lose
Tech - in win or lose
BYU - we like ND better so play an extra game to improve your already superior resume to prove your worth to us
You get it.
And I appreciate that we do control our destiny here. What irks us is that we are held to a different standard than others even tho we are in a power conference now.

That’s going to be pretty common going forward. With mega conference scheduling there just won’t be as many losses in conference. I mean, SEC ended the year with four one loss teams. Add in that 2 loss BIG/SEC now = 1 loss XII/ACC it’s just how it’s gonna be.
Also and probably more important, the “11 win” metric is dumb. For decades teams played 10 games or less. Until pretty recently 11 games were the norm so yeah an 11 win team would mean undefeated and surely top 10.
You make some fair points, Stache.

Not that it will matter.
But the narrative is shaping up well for BYU. No one giving them a chance it the game. No one giving them a chance to even make the playoffs.
CHIP ON THE SHOULDER: CHECK
Yup. No one is giving us a chance. We've been doubted and underdogs in most games this year. We just secured our beloved coach. Our team is much healthier this time around. This team wants this rematch. Tech is a very good team and I think they will do some damage in the CFP, but don't be too surprised if BYU pulls the upset Saturday.

To my knowledge, BYU also wants there to be several/many donors involved in any one specific endeavor. I know this from friends/colleagues involved w/ BYU and a handful of anecdotes shared with me. When my son played lacrosse at Texas, they played both Utah and BYU in the same year. Utah was in its final year before becoming a D1 team, and proceeded to demolish Texas. BYU did, too.
When talking to some of the BYU parents at the game, I reflected on Utah becoming a D1 team. One BYU dad said, "Yes. One guy is donating enough to endow the program into perpetuity. He came to us first and the AD declined. Did not want a single donor with that much influence over the program. So he went to Utah and they said yes."
Now, that could be more of BYU hating on Utah, but I had heard similar stories at other times.
/csb?
Would not surprise me if true, especially because we are not desperate for donors.

ND is out if BYU wins. That’ll shut up Miami boosters and they get off Scott free.
just like keeping Texas out due to 3 losses.
I think this is correct. And it would be some sweet karma for us to knock ND out of the playoffs.
And even if BYU loses, but it's a close one, would they take BYU just to solve the ND/Miami/Texas Gordian Knot and it's easier to explain?
