Yep. Wish we could have gotten them this year.
I know they lost almost everything, but I really don’t mind avoiding Gundy tbh. Would’ve rather had wv

IT Humidor (Thursday and Friday practice)
SpoilerAlrighty. Spring ball continued with back to back practices on Thursday and Friday. Not much was to be gleaned on Thursday as the team was in helmets. Friday was a bit more interesting due to scrimmage work, but there’s an important caveat we’ll get to regarding that.
The most interesting thing on Thursday was Cameron Williams got significant reps at right guard. Previously he’s dabbled at the position but this time he was more involved. It wasn’t a padded practice so it’s hard to glean how he looked, but much of O-line play is mental and technical, not just athletic and physical, so he got in some needed work. One source effectively stated it might be a race between DJ Campbell and Williams to see who ‘gets it’ first. It seems the staff really wants Campbell to grab the position by the horns but he hasn’t quite done that yet. Given Williams’ talent level, he’s not just token competition but a real threat to Campbell’s playing time. Cole Hutson, upon his return, will also be a real threat but he hasn’t been available this spring.
If the staff had its druthers I believe the long term preference is Hutson (or Connor Robertson) at center, Campbell at guard, and Williams at right tackle. Williams is not much of a threat to Christian Jonesfor this season, however, and Hutson and Robertson have Jake Majors in front of them.
Moving on to Friday, the thud tempo scrimmage was largely 1s vs 2s and it went about as expected. “Whatever first string was in there did well. First team offense ran it down the second team defense’s throat.” This is where Cedric Baxterreally looked the part running downhill, aided of course by the O-line being able to move the line of scrimmage. Jaydon Blue and Savion Red both looked solid. They’re both good outside/cutback runners. Blue showed good feel and vision but needs to work on ball protection some.
Hayden Conner took some second team reps at center which opened the door for Neto Umeozulu to play left guard. As opposed to Thursday when Williams played the bulk of his reps at right guard, he was switching back and forth between tackle and guard.
Quinn Ewers had a good, efficient day (again, 1s vs 2s). He was quick through his progressions which is something that has improved throughout camp. The offense was also able to confuse the second team defense some. Ewers had a nice red zone touchdown throw to Gunnar Helm on a scramble.
Speaking of Helm, he’s being integrated into the passing game more. That’s more evidence of the team’s expected 11 personnel identity for 2023. If something happened to Ja’Tavion Sanders the coaches would need Helm having familiarity with Sanders’ role and on the same page with Ewers.
Defensive playmakers on the day were Austin Jordan, who had an interception; Terrance Brooks, who forced a fumble; and, Anthony Hill who was violent and assignment sound in his run fits.
A few other sourced miscellaneous notes:
— Ethan Burke is playing the run better. He still has a tall order versus Kelvin Banks and Jones, but he’s improved quite a bit. He’s looking like your starter at Buck.
— Twice now we’ve heard about Zac Swanson making some plays. Since he’s always been a longer curve player we haven’t discussed him much but he’s coming on. Good quickness, good motor, and he’ll battle. Only 260 pounds, though, so he’ll probably need this offseason and next to be ready for real snaps.
— Quinn is harnessing some of what Paul has called ‘positive insecurity’. Ewers thinks Arch Manning is right on his heels. That will make them both better. Based on what we’re hearing, Ewers leaving after this year isn’t really on his radar. He’s focused on the process of getting better and that’s it.
The book on Arch coming into Texas has been true to form. As a quarterback “he’s good at everything, very prepared, and though he’s fun and can be light-hearted, he’s very competitive.”
The team will return to workouts on Monday and the practice field on Tuesday for the final week of Spring ball.

IT Humidor
SpoilerFollowing Thursday’s team work the defense continues to get the best of the offense. That’s a good thing, normal, and will likely continue well into August camp. The flaw on defense, though not fatal, remains Edge pass rushing. Two reasons it’s not fatal, the Edges are going up against great bookend tackles, and Ethan Burke is getting more and more reps at Buck in large part due to his ability to rush the passer. Burke is stronger than he was a year ago. He and Finkley are likely to find themselves in a timeshare at this point.
Overall, depth on the defense is another team strength. Cornerbacks are a good example of that depth. Malik Muhammadwas really good both in man coverage or zone. He also had a really good blitz on Arch Manning, and he was active on running plays as well. He’s the total package and probably the most advanced freshman of the 14 enrollees at this point. He would start at most (all?) Big 12 schools this Fall.
The Kitan Crawford noise we’ve been reporting made its way into Steve Sarkisian‘s Thursday Zoom with the media. We’ve known since he was in high school he’s really fast, but now he’s playing fast. He can really cover space and close windows. Terrance Brooks also made plays on Thursday, getting his hands on a couple of passes.
Up front the run defense by the D-line was very good. We know the first team, but on the second team they had Kristopher Ross, Alfred Collins, Aaron Bryant, and Justice Finkley together a lot and there weren’t many places for the running backs to go. Bryant is good at holding his ground and Collins made a few plays where he’d get into the backfield. The linebackers had a good time behind them and they’re also getting really good at timing their blitzes. Jett Bush is a much better pass-rusher from linebacker than as an end. He will be credible depth behind Jaylan Ford.
We don’t know if the D-line’s base pass rush from the edges is great but their blitz package has a chance to make up for it.
It was tough on the quarterbacks in full team scrimmage. Manning was hounded a lot but he did hit a deep corner route to a tight end that was really impressive.
CJ Baxter definitely looks the part, he can run with some lean and be a problem to tackle. He had a score on an outside sweep behind Cameron Williams. He’s a smart runner.
Quinn Ewers is definitely a lot more comfortable in the passing game. He was able to get the ball out quickly and to open targets in the passing drills but he did have to check down a lot in team. There is no battle for starting quarterback but Arch is obviously talented and Maalik Murphyhas a decent idea of what he’s doing.
AD Mitchell‘s comfort in the offense improves by the practice and he’s mostly with the ones now.
The O-line remains consistent with Kelvin Banks–Hayden Conner–Jake Majors–DJ Campbell–Christian Jones. Williams is the swing tackle and has received some looks at guard. Both Neto Umeozulu and Payton Kirklandcontinue to receive praise. Texas will have no problem being 8-9 deep this season, but this group needs more time together, specifically in the interior, before they start to play to their talent level.- 12

IT practice notes
SpoilerTuesday’s practice featured a spirited effort from the defense with ‘effort’ being the optimal word. Guys were flying around making plays or helping their teammates make plays. There were lots of tips, overthrows due to quarterback pressure, and some interceptions. It was so windy the coaches moved the practice indoors for 7 on 7 and team but that didn’t seem to help the quarterbacks much.
Some overall notes after spring practice No. 7:
– Kitan Crawford remains “locked in.” He’s vocal in the secondary for the first time. If you’re not talking you don’t know what you’re doing — he’s talking. He excels when locked up in man coverage.
– Another DB who stood out on Tuesday was freshman Malik Muhammad who made an “IQ” interception when he jumped a route after making a great read. This team is deep at corner.
– The practice featured a lot of 3rd down work which opened the door for Ethan Burke to shine as a pass rusher. He had a strong day which also helped the DB’s. Third down was a bit of an Achilles heel last season, so Burke, or any pass rusher developing, is something to keep an eye on.
– Not to be outdone by T’Vondre Sweat‘s recent interception, Jaray Bledsoe had one of his own while working from the interior. I believe that was on a tipped pass at the line of scrimmage.
– It wasn’t all defense, though. As the offense worked third downs they also worked on the shorter passing game which involved Jordan Whittington. His intelligence as a route runner and ability to find soft zones was on display.
– Xavier Worthy caught another deep ball from Quinn Ewers. It appears the connection between these two is improving which is something else to monitor. Worthy’s hands haven’t necessarily been great but you’ll accept that if he can return to Big Play ‘Zay.
– Perhaps evidence of Chris Jackson‘s coaching, Casey Cain is showing improvement, particularly as a route runner. Dare I say crisper routes!
– A budding theme is we’re hearing of players all over the depth chart making plays, whether true freshmen or second-teamers like Cain. We’re a far cry from a former Texas coach telling us there were 14 players on offense alone who would likely never contribute at Texas.
– Practice resumes Thursday and then again on Saturday.
