    Spoiler

Last year it was written Steve Sarkisian simply needed to improve the program incrementally across the board. He accomplished that, and now he needs to do it again. If he does, we’ll be witnessing a genuine program rebuild rather than a spirited attempt.

The reason we reached out for sourcing for this article was so we could write a more thorough offseason checklist. Many of the aspects listed would have made our list without sourcing, but there’s also some more interesting insider notes interspersed.

Sourcing is in quotes. IT’s follow-up notes and comments are in parenthesis.

“They need to solidify the running back position and they need more depth at receiver on offense.”

(Jonathon Brooks and Cedric Baxter will play a lot, but in my opinion they need a third volume back based on the Alamo Bowl. Preferably one who can get tough yards and move the pile.)

“We need two receiver options along with some double tights to compliment our ability to stretch the field. You need a replacement for Karic. I believe it is Neto or Agbo but Neto can play on the edge better than Agbo. Not sure we have the WR on campus currently to do that (stretch the field). Cook will have a chance to play early and add depth to that room right away. Neyor makes an instant impact if he can come back healthy.”

(The clock is beginning to tick a little on portal additions. Things need to pick up soon. At last check Texas was still poised to add at least one wide receiver. I love using a large, athletic offensive lineman as a blocking tight end. It keeps the player engaged and acclimates him to playing against opposing defensive lines.)

“The OL will solidify with four starters and DJ Campbell. Shift that group around and get them reps together. We need to be a little tougher and find our identity whether it’s run heavy or pass. We need both but add consistency for both.”

(There’s going to be a lot of competition on the offensive line this offseason. In addition to the above, coaches need to drill better discipline. We saw far too many mistakes and pre-snap penalties. I also agree for the need to become more physical up front, particularly in the interior. Robust competition allows Kyle Flood to better address all these issues.)

“Defensively they will be good. Big up front but they do need a better pass rush. They need a safety in the portal and one of the young linebackers to be real good.”

(They have so many Edges to develop I’m not too worried about the position next year. Jalen Catalon will visit Texas this weekend. He comes with risks due to his injury history but he may be too good to pass up. A healthy Catalon lined up with Jerrin Thompson is one of the best safety duos in the country. As for linebacker, the options are numerous. It’s a hard position to play early but Will is much more manageable than Mike, and the young players will have Jaylan Ford to guide them, assuming Ford returns.)

“They also need to stop dancing around the players that want to leave for NIL. If they have NIL FOMO (fear of missing out) let them leave so they know who is committed and who is not.”

(Managing NIL is one of the most difficult tasks for the modern coaching staff. Finding the balance between practicality and not creating divas can be difficult.)

From another source with a different take on NIL.

“They need to make sure players on defense are taken care of. They didn’t have much value last year but they do now.”

(Other sources indicate this concern is being addressed.)

“They need to be more careful about who they bring into the program. Some of them may be talented players but they’re terrible outside of football.”

(This appears to have been addressed with Sarkisian having more leverage thanks to quality roster development and exceptional recruiting. Sark bringing in a couple of malcontents was somewhat defensible given roster needs. It’s much less so now and he seems to be acting accordingly.)

“Quarterback needs to be more consistent.”

(This is pretty obvious but the Alamo Bowl offered some QB play will be more consistent if Sark continues to carve out an offensive identity that yields a more comfortable, confident quarterback)

The offseason certainly has its warts, but if you appreciate roster management, player development, and program building, the offseason can be enjoyable if the work carries over to the field. Last offseason did cary over to the field. I believe this one will, too.

They will keep coming as long as there is significant NIL flowing. I'd love to see how much shit you all talk without burnt ends, horns with heart, Clark field, Pinkertons and a few other key programs/donors that have actually been the difference makers in keeping the team and recruiting from imploding.

Manning’s still signed off on Texas and Sark, or are they idiots now too? Don’t think they would send their kid to a failing program

Coolcoolcool. Keep the good candy. Leave the rest. Lol…I bet Halloweens were fun if you had siblings.

Your op made it seem like Dykes had nothing to work with while Sark had unlimited riches everywhere.

Dykes had an incredible season and will basically be as good as his coordinators. I say coordinators because Sark needs one! An OC. A main play caller. He cannot be all three things and get to the level we want. You can’t be HC, QB whisperer and main OC. It has rarely worked. Hire a damn OC Sark. For fuck’s sake. And no he couldn’t have done what Dykes just did at TCU for that reason and he can’t scheme with what he has on hand. Has to be his guys. Dykes would have loved to have a world class RB random like Rojo and Bijan. We didn’t use them correctly and that’s on Sark. Worthy should have been benched at the Alamo Bowl. That’s on Satk. That wasted TO is on Sark. Dykes could have schemed with what we have here using GARRETT FUCKING RILEY! we had to put our hopes in Kansas to try and beat KState and didn’t even win the B12.

I would take every person on that offense over ours except Bijan, Rojo, Jatavion, and Banks. And both RB’s they have aren’t that bad. Experience matters, every contributor is at least a junior except Jordan Hudson and he’s a 5 star.

  5. IT has been mentioning Peyton Woodyard a lot lately, ex-teammates with Deandre Moore at Bosco. He’s announcing his commitment at the All American game in a couple weeks, and IT thinks Texas is at the top of his list even though we didn’t make his top 7 (he’s fong’d to Georgia right now.) Nahlin a few days ago said to watch All American game announcements even beyond Jelani McDonald.

Some Georgia fans mentioned they were hearing we were targeting AD Mitchell as a potential portal guy. He's been hurt most of this year and he doesn't exactly have stats, but they seemed to really want to keep him and were upset at the news, so who knows. Does have the big body frame we're missing at the WR position, but I'm guessing we're waiting for a bigger name to come up. Hadn't seen him mentioned here, but maybe he was awhile back and I just didn't see

    Spoiler

Bowl preparation continues apace with the Alamo Bowl just six days away. If you’re a Texas fan, or writer, it’s creeping up pretty fast with the focus being heavily geared toward recruiting this past week.

Two of the big offseason storylines will be if Quinn Ewers can show significant improvement and if the offensive line can take the next step, despite losing a good right tackle in Christian Jones. Bowl practices are a good way to get a jump start on the following spring.

The O-line group that started all 12 games together will make it 13 on December 29. Cole Hutson is healthy and back at right guard meaning Banks-Conner-Majors-Hutson-Jones will give it one final go. Two of the younger offensive linemen receiving praise are DJ Campbell and Cameron Williams. Those are precisely the two we need to be hearing about given needs next season.

An early guess at spring’s O-line is Banks-Hutson-Majors-Campbell-Conner/Williams. We’re unsure why they would move Hutson, but that’s the early prognostication from a good source. We believe it’s likely Conner will get a strong look at right tackle. That should be a good battle between his experience and Williams’ upside. Neto Umeozulu will also push for guard reps. Given the 2022 class being on campus as well as 4/5 of the 2023 signees arriving in January, Kyle Flood will be licking his chops and coaching hard.

Wide receiver is paced by Xavier Worthyand Jordan Whittington. Whittington was the impetus for “Pretty excited about a WR development” in the moderator only thread. We think it’s more likely than not he returns. We’ll go more into that at the proper time. Savion Red is looking more and more comfortable in the offense.

Running back will be fun to watch in the bowl game. Everyone’s high on Jonathon Brooks but Jaydon Blue will also get touches.

As far as the portal goes:

WR – 1 or 2: IT expects at least one receiver to be added to the roster but a caveat applies, it’s dependent on who actually enters. Clearly Texas hasn’t been very proactive with players who have already entered. It’s likely something will shake out.

DB – 1 or 2: Getting information on Syracuse safety Ja’Had Carter is like pulling teeth. We just know Texas will factor in his final decision. Ohio State is also involved.

Edge/DL – 1 or 2: Similar to receiver, nothing in the portal seems too enticing at this time. They would like some experience at Edge if possible.

Best player available or emerging need – 1: You always have to hold your water for the unforeseen.
Expect more activity after bowl season.
