Hand-wringing about the spring game is shaggy/surly tradition. But remember that we mixed up 1s and 2s, so we never saw a complete side of either offense or defense that we'll actually see come fall. Hard to know what to make of that offensively. The arrival of Anderson and Ingram will make a big difference, our WRs and LJH look legit, and we finally have QB depth. Defense looks great, even with the departures from last year (and no Gary Johnson in the spring game). Guys actually made open-field tackles.

I'm looking forward to winning 8 or 9 games this year. Show me a loss.

  2. I am not sure aggy would have gotten Fisher if they were still in the Big 12. At the very least I am not sure if they would have gone with $75M guaranteed, even though FSU likely wasn't all that interested in keeping Fisher around even if aggy had gone with something less. That few added millions they get from sharing a conference with Bama, Georgia, and Florida, allowed them to be even more reckless than usual.

The one thing that stood out most during practice was seeing Herb Hand get in everybody’s ass when the first-team offense faced Texas’ second-team defense.

    'Seeing Hand in everybody's ass'!

That's the sort of Freudian shit it is hard to pull off with fake reports.

Excuse me, sir, but if the Sausage King of Chicago lacked initiative and commitment, he wouldn't have become the fucking Sausage King of Chicago.

Well, it was ousux who lacks the drive and initiative to become a day drunk, our local Sausage King is on board with also being the Sauce-age King though..

Wilson is from Columbus. He's fully aware the weather stinks in Ohio.

I lived a number of years in the Northeast, but I hadn't been back up there for a winter in over a decade. I was back up there this January and it was a fucking shock when I got hit by a moderate wind gust at 28 degrees! I don't know how often he gets back up to Columbus, but a Spring Game at 45 degrees with rain, couldn't have been a plus.

Wilson is officially visiting tOSU this weekend. Their Spring Game is this Saturday.

OV to Texas 20th - 22nd. He says he'll commit shortly after. It's not ideal he's coming in on Spring Game weekend, but given his proximity he can show up early and stay late. Herman and staff should be give him plenty of attention.  If he's still on campus Sunday night,  I like our chances.

So he is officialling during both school's Spring Games. I don't see it as a problem. If he were getting a full red-carpet at OSU and a time-constrained visit here, it would be a problem. He gets more of an apples-to-apples comparison this way. His OSU visit could be limited by his flight times, while here he hopefully stays until the last minute of the allotted time. Unfortunately it looks it will be relatively nice temperature-wise in Columbus this weekend, though rain is in the Saturday forecast. They are only hitting 45 today.

Yep apologies, it’s early. Cancelled his weekend visit to aggy and changed his UOV to the aggy spring game to an OV

Wait, he changed his UOV to an OV? Sounds like advantage aggy to me. Unfortunately we won't have Hamm's Crystal Balls to punch around here anymore.

I think Washington, Giles, and Orlando have legit coaching chops. Drayton as well, though he was almost certainly brought in for his recruiting skins on the wall. We'll see with Hand. I tend towards being a believer in Naivar, but I'd like to see Brandon Jones make a significant leap this year.

The offensive staff besides Drayton and Hand don't seem to have much of a resume when it comes to coaching at the college or professional level. Meekins gets a pass because he had almost nothing to work with in 2017, but I'm pessimistic about Mehringer, Beck, and Warehime. I really wish that the Major could have done us a solid and hired Mehringer as an OC.

It's hard to knock any of the defensive guys on the field. Hopefully we won't have to figure out anytime soon if they are actually plus technical coaches or if Orlando is the true ace. Beck screwed the offensive guys, but there we so many pieces moving in the wrong direction, like the maddening personnel decisions and effort issues, that it is hard to give any of the O coaches a pass for the on-the-field product.

That said, if the D is as good as last year's and we have no Maryland let-down, a slightly above average offense should improve on our win total easily and could have us fighting for the conference. Beck has earned his criticism, but remember he lost only 3 games while at OSU, the same number that Herman lost in the 2 years prior. If the talent is just good enough to cover up for unimaginative playcalling, we could and should win a lot of games next season.

The Mehringer and Warehime hires seem to be a product of Herman's cronyist tendencies (see also Horny, Casey). I can't really explain Beck. Hopefully Chris Del Conte or someone that Herman respects / listens to knocked some sense into him over the offseason, because this is the one thing that could prevent him from taking Texas back to the national elite conversation.

Still have fears that Herman ends up being Mack Brown. Thinks that you only need talent to win trophies, strategy and tactics be damned. The guys taking home trophies generally have some ability to innovate or scheme their way over equally-talent teams, guys like Mack rack up wins but don't actually bring home the real hardware unless by luck or by recruiting a Vince Young. Outside of Orlando this staff seems designed mostly as a recruiting staff rather than an Xs and Os staff.

I hope this is a ploy to get the players up-front and then shift some of the coaching staff towards guys who might bring some Xs and Os skills, especially on O. Otherwise, Herman might be able to win big if Orlando decides to pick up the bottle and become the next Bud Foster.

  11. A lot of empty talent in Shaka's recruiting thus far. The one-and-dones have been good enough to get themselves a paycheck, but none actually carried the team much less won us any important games. His other one year rental got injured. Not his fault on the injury, but if you are relying on grad transfers or should-be-NBA players you only have for one year, then you pay the cost if they don't contribute while taking development time from others. Class rankings don't mean shit if the entire class is gone before anyone is even an upperclassman and the team won jack-squat of note during that period.

Shaka failed in his evaluation on Mack. He knew that kid for a long time and still couldn't see he was a headcase. Eric Davis I won't blame him for, but Mack is squarely an evaluation miss.

Still think Coleman saves Shaka's bacon and he gets a chance to reset the roster, but I have little faith he can coach us anywhere close to Bill Self. His ceiling is feeling an awful lot like Rick Barnes at this point.
