Inside Texas has heard only one name to replace Jeff Choate as Texas linebackers coach. That doesn't mean there aren't more coaches under consideration, or that this coach is a lock for the position, but we do believe Arizona defensive coordinator Johnny Nansen is Steve Sarkisian's first choice to replace Choate.

    Of note:

    - Nansen has worked under Sark at Washington and USC
    - Nansen played linebacker in college but has coached multiple positions in his career
    - He has been very successful in his short time as a DC at Arizona
    - He has a very strong reputation as a recruiter, particularly out West where Texas would love to strength its recruiting grip
    - Nansen was born in Samoa and lived in American Samoa before moving to America as a teenager

    Potential hurdles?

    - He's currently the DC and play caller at Arizona. Would he take a demotion even if it came with a significant pay raise? He currently makes $750,000 but would surely enter the million dollar club on Texas' staff. There's always the potential Arizona would re-up to a satisfactory level
    - What's his best route to becoming a head coach, assuming that's his goal? That could be a pro or con for Texas' chances. Time with Sark to better understand how to navigate the current climate would be seen as a pro

One thing's for sure, Nansen and Sark are close. Sark elevated Nansen from coaching obscurity when Nansen was at Idaho. Because of his ability to recruit, Sark made sure to find roles for Nansen on his staff.

With Texas going to the SEC and Arizona sentenced to the Big 12, that would be another reason for Nansen to seriously consider the move.

We'll have much more on this if circumstances warrant. Our info points to Nansen being the top candidate on the board to replace Jeff Choate.

One potential reason for Nansen to turn us down - Jed Fisch is going to be on the short list for Florida if Napier crashes and burns as expected next season. Nansen could get a raise from Arizona and play the long game on the hopes of being an SEC DC in 2025.

The fact that you think it's very fair to essentially praise college football players for not quitting says all that needs to be said about their program.

Also, we have a long line of mediocre white safeties who would love to have been treated as well by our fans as some of y'all are treating A&M's scrubs. Praise for effort, wow that's a stark situation over there.

Most people on this board were predicting OSU to blow them out and they made it respectable. And I thought I made it clear that patting them on the head like a 5 year old who just hit the ball off the tee is a sign of just how fucked their program is.

For the record, I give Michael Taaffe and Jett Bush props when they play well too.

I do enjoy the that none of them seem to connect “of course we lost! we were playing all of our scrubs…” with “…which will be pretty similar to the roster we trot out next season.”

I think it’s very fair to praise an outmanned bunch of backups for their efforts on the field last night and yet still point and laugh at the state of the ATM program that resulted in an outmanned bunch of backups having to take the field last night. And it ain’t getting significantly better next year.

  4. Appreciate everyone’s memories on this thread from the start. I grew up in another territory and only read about the VE’s in the wrestling magazines at the time.

Saw the movie and loved it. If you know all the details of the timeline and especially if you saw them all growing up, you’ll notice the discrepancies and omissions, but they didn't bother me and won’t for viewers who come in with no knowledge of the source material. It’s a lot to pack into 2:15 of run time and they needed to blend some events for narrative purposes if they want to broaden the appeal beyond smarks and GenX men who grew up in DFW.  If it was done over an 8 or 10 episode limited series I’d be less understanding.

My biggest quibble was probably JAW as Kerry, he’s a fine actor but physically and facially just didn’t look much like Kerry. I liked the Flair actor better than some here, it’s hard to be a one of a kind character like the Nature Boy but I thought his promo was pretty good. The writers perfectly captured him in the post-match scene in the dressing room where the VE’s are working through their emotional trauma and Flair just saunters in asking where the best place to start drinking is. The Harley Race and Fritz actors may have been the best true doppelgängers for their real-life counterparts.

Overall it is on a very short list with The Wrestler as the best movie about pro wrestling ever made. It has a clear love for the subject material and never demonizes anyone for cheap heat. Even the Fritz character is nuanced when it would have been the easiest thing in the world to make him a caricature villain. I’d love to see what @michaelpshayes thought about the film.

Would highly recommend watching this video if you have the time and want to get pumped about a guy (who, if you’re like me) you haven’t heard of before this week. Another son of a former NFL player, about 1% body fat, trains as a boxer (Scipio will go nuts when he sees that), great looking family, and did the work to graduate early. Looks like a perfect fit for culture and talent. I understand not everyone has the resources to put together a 10 minute, professionally produced profile story like this, but this kid could be an amazing pickup for us.

shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit didn't expect to see a Bud Davis tweet show up in the recruiting thread! dude is very good and worth a follow if you like CFB analytics - even if he's a Florida fan.

this thread is worth reading regarding recruit expected value

Does Bud understand that ATM’s 3 highest quality “commits” didn’t actually sign yesterday and are likely to go elsewhere?

    Strong to quite strong resume:

    Coaching career

After graduating from Randolph–Macon in 1995, Bateman went to work for a company that sold paper machinery. He got into coaching when the owner sold the company, working as an assistant coach at Benedictine High School in Richmond.[1] He got his first job in the college ranks at Hampden–Sydney College in 1997 as a graduate assistant, working with the defensive line and linebackers. He was named the defensive coordinator at Siena College in New York in 1999, and was promoted to head coach in 2000. At the time of his promotion, he was said to be the youngest head coach in Division I football at 26.[2] After the football program was shut down in 2003, he joined the coaching staff at Richmond in 2004 as their assistant secondary coach, on a coaching staff that had future college and NFL assistants, such as Mike Elko, Patrick Graham, and Marcus Satterfield. He also had assistant coaching stints under Pete Lembo at Lehigh, Elon, and Ball State.[3]

    Army

Bateman was named the defensive coordinator at Army in 2014. He was suspended in 2017 when it was revealed that he had received improper information from former Wake Forest radio announcer Tommy Elrod.[4] In addition to the suspension, he was also fined $25,000 and forced to attend an ethics training program.[5]

Bateman was named a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2018, the award given to the top assistant coach in college football.[6] In his tenure with Army, he improved the Black Knights defense from 91st overall in 2014 to 8th in the country in 2018.[7]

    North Carolina

Bateman was named the co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at North Carolina on December 9, 2018.[8] He and co-coordinator Tommy Thigpen oversaw the position change and development of former quarterback Chazz Surratt into an all-conference linebacker and NFL draftee and brought in several top defensive recruits to the program, being a key player in the Tar Heels' recruiting upswing. After three years leading the Tar Heel defense, Bateman and UNC agreed to part ways after the 2021 season, which featured the worst defensive unit of his tenure.[9]

    Florida

In January 2022, Bateman joined Billy Napier's staff at Florida as the inside linebackers coach. [lulz]

The new name being rumored is Blake Baker for DC. Missouri's DC.

ESPN efficiency ranks as a DC:

    Missouri '23 (#25)

    Missouri '22 (#24)

    Miami '20 (#42)

    Miami '19 (#26)

    LA Tech '18 (#90)

    LA Tech '17 (#86)

    LA Tech '16 (#91)

    LA Tech '15 (#54)

Unfortunately that seems like a reasonably competent hire.

Getting Smith would be great and all, but I don't measure pleasure in college sports through the lens of aggie tears. Those are nice and all, but that won't make me feel better about losing Hampton or Wingo.

This. Also why I’m not interested in Evan Stewart. Building your program through a guiding philosophy of what would stick it to your rival the most is a big part of why ATM is where it is. We can do much better.
