Of course.  Hence my post.  Sark isn't going to pull an aggy and make a coaching decision based on fan reaction.

You should have been.  ‘‘Twas better than ATM’s response and more damn appropriate.

and no I’m being typical Surly facetious:  ”Surly Horns: what happens here reaches Belmont”

  2. Been lurking all day and trying to chime in while this thread derailed like a bloody corpse stuck on a runaway cart through icy hell.  Count me in as not overly excited on Rod Wright.  Experience at a high-level and high-end recruiting appears to be a downgrade from Davis, but most would probably be.  Perhaps Wright was not the true first choice?

But, assuming he is, I’ll happily place great fucking expectations on him.

FWIW - here are the grades for the Arizona and Texas DL last year:

Thank this is my hit rn. Am I reading this right:  his overall grade was just under Collins’ but his isolated Run defense grade would have been just under Murphy?    Also his “Tack” would be second only to Sweat?   Is that “Tackles-made”

if so, that’s not a bad pick up at all.

If true, seems a little underwhelming when the $9.95 reports have been "a hire on the level of a Bo Davis".

So if it’s Wright - fine, whatever, hope he kicks some ass - why can’t he pull a Choate?  If he’d agreed to take the job, then he would have had permission from the Texans, right?  If so, then why not announce him asap so that he can begin to make contact w recruits and transfers etc?  I’m honest that I don’t know if the NFL has specific rules on this compared to CFB

Relationship with Brennan no. However its been heavily rumored he just wanted out from under Fisch and would take his old role to be play caller.

AND punk his old buddy Sark?  The AZ reporter is as bad as Looch and Fat Ketch - wait are they really all the same person with different headshots?

Anyway, I feel pretty confident that a coach who has had his own system for a few years did not just accept his job at UA with a contingency/idea to re-hire the DC whom he has no relationship with.

Agreed.  But Sark's WR coach hire's resume was nearly non-existent.  Chris Jackson had one year as a WR coach and a couple years as an asst WR coach (with no college experience) before Sark picked him to lead his WR room.

I argue that Sark is willing to do that because he knows that a better hire at DL coach is more important than the WR coach.

Dl coach at Arkansas, Ole Miss, Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina.

Rocker is my bet.  Hurtt apparently has been an awful DC so he’s likely looking back at a position level.  Wouldn’t he have been announced by now?

anyway don’t forget Karl Dunbar at Pittsburgh. He was thr DL coach at Bama with Sark there in 2016. He also has SEC experience and coached a NCG line.  I think him and Rocker make more sense than Wright.

  7. Nielsen reportedly has multiple interviews for DC candidates - is Sark now pulling sitting NFL DC’s for CFB position coaches?

that’s bigger balls than pulling Nansen out of his position

Don’t get me wrong, Nielsen’s a cool candidate; Rod Wright seems to be lacking in…. resume?   OL and DL coach seem to be exceptionally high on Sark’s list in regards to “hire-a-BAMF”.  He slapped the OC title on Flood to make sure he would get paid and Davis was a Top 3 paid assistant coach in all of college football.  So he’s going to Wright?  A former Horn who has done well at… UTSA?  I’m skeptical here but would want Wright to kick all kinds of ass if it was him.

    Akina was/is a man guy.

This move brings me hope for the secondary - the defense did generally better when they were playing PK’s preferred Cover 1 man/press.  Sark notoriously mentioned Joseph’s Cover 4 scheme when he hired him.

let Joseph & Gideon recruit and let Akina coach man for fuck’s sake

  9. Hurtt would be cool but he’s also a DC, have to think he stays in the NFL.

Rocker from Philly would be a great choice.
Karl Dunbar is out there as well with a great background and was at Bama with Sark.

    Probably not:?
John Scott at Detroit spent time with Muschamp at SC and has long CFB resume

Cowboys DL coach Aden Durde was on Falcons staff with Sark and Quinn.

John Timu is Asst DL coach w the Chargers, and played safety for Sark at UW.  He’s pretty young in his career

I think the first call should to be Freddie Roach, Alabama's DL coach since 2020. He may turn you down as an Alabama alum but you have to make the call. Maybe it's Lanning at Bama and he wants to bring Tosh Lupoi and Tony Tuioti (who also has a tangential connection to Sark through working under Justin Wilcox at Cal for a couple years), at which point Texas is a really attractive landing spot for Roach.

That said, I think Okam or Wright would be serviceable at a minimum and it is always cool to have an alum on staff. Just not sure they are more than fall back candidates.

On the defensive side of the ball, all the hires have had a relationship with either Justin Wilcox (most of them) or Muschamp.  Bo Davis is the one that boggles me but Sark had hired him at USC in 2013.   Roach or Tuioti make a lot of sense, but if it is Lanning to Bama, one of these is available

  11. Fuckity fuck fuck Bo!  Though I’d he has wanted to coach the entire DL, that’s a tough deal and seems like he was in a PK-or-me ultimatum.

Oddly enough, both PK and Nansen have experience as DL coaches - not to Bo’s level of reputation.  Joyner would be cool, and Orgeron would be blast.

would Sark look at anyone in the NFL, and possibly Tracy Rocker with the Eagles (as it seems Sirianni is on thin ice there). Rocker has long been considered an elite DL coach and was at Tenn under Pruitt - who coached at Bama with Sark - and So. Carolina with Coach Boom. So, maybe a link? Or just wishcasting since I’m moderately depressed about Coach Bo.
