  1. Not me. Really wanted Nebraska.
Now the only way to face Nebraska is in the national championship in Omaha. I'm still hoping for it, but I think the chances are very slim.

I didn’t want to play Nebraska until Knuckles went out for the season. Seeing their below-average serve/receive and passing vs Wisc and Minn changed my mind. (I bet Cook really misses Akana now!)

Nevertheless, I don’t think Nebraska will make it to Omaha. I hoping for a dump of ticket sales for the Final Four.
  2. Selection Sunday!
Texas should be the overall #1, just a matter of the 4 sub regional teams coming to Texas and who is seed 8/9/16 for the regional
Does the committee match up two B1G teams in the 8/9 slot, almost guaranteeing Texas would face someone like Minny, Nebraska or Ohio State for the chance to go to the Final Four? (Bunched up in the projected 7-8-9 seeds)
Do they seed Nebraska in our regional for the stories, currently limping and injured going into December? Could USC be someone who gets into a Lincoln sub regional and Skylar ends up back in Austin?

Agree with all of that. With Nebraska losing twice this weekend, they can see the arguments to send them either here or to send them to Louisville.

Watching some VB this past week, I would NOT want to run into UCF as #16. They seem very dangerous with Melville.
  3. Anyone go today? Read Ewert was the better setter, Molly will 100% play right side, as she got no middle reps.  Caffey is still being integrated, so Bergmark may start at MB. Halter played more than Akana??

Yes, I went. This is a pretty accurate summary, with some comments below. Also see @nellynel’s player-by-player summary on VT.

Setter: Ewert did very well. With so many changes to each side after each set, I couldn’t tell if she benefited from better passing vs SKT. But yes, it’s possible Ewert gets the starting nod.

Passing/Serve-Receive: looked much better than last year. Every L/DS played both positions and all had decent playing time (except for maybe Heinrich?) Fleck looked great. Halter had some fantastic digs. Overall passing and SR seemed to degrade with each set though. (could be all of the lineup and side changes with each set)

Parra did VERY well at OH.

    Kahahawai is the real deal.

O’Neal/Bergmark as MBs to start the year is almost certain, but I don’t think it will take long for Caffey to jump in. She had a couple of great plays without getting a lot of sets. I wouldn’t be surprised if Singletary RS’d.

Despite the explicit PA announcements not to video the scrimmage, someone on VT did. They were going to upload it somewhere.

  4. Volleytalk can be a very toxic place. The Texas fans aren’t all that toxic. There’s a bit of a tribal thing going on with Team Gabriel and Team SKT/someone else. But it hasn’t been too bad for the most part.

But there are a lot of Texas haters on there. I mean…A LOT! It’s easy to say Texas has the most hate of any program on there, with Nebraska a distant second. Jhenna has been target number #2 behind Elliott himself. That’s not just this year. That’s been since she became the starter. And it wasn’t about love for Shook. She got the hate before that.

But I don’t know what specifically triggered Gabriel to make the VT comment, or what’s going through her head regarding this decision in the first place. Nor is it any of my business. I’m grateful and thankful for her. I hope and expect her UT experience to have been fulfilling for her, and I hope she has tremendous success in her future.

I’m pretty sure that GIF of her conversation with Elliott during the regional final (Nebraska) was on her radar.

There are a couple of Texas supporters on VT that can be pretty harsh. But yes, Texas gets a lot of hate on there and Jhenna was a target for a lot of it.

I’m really sad she’s leaving. She was a positive intangible that will be hard to replace. She deserves a ton of respect, and I wish her nothing but the best.

  5. Fields only has 1 year of eligibility left correct? Or is it 2?
I thought she would end up at a better program in the national championship hunt. What's the draw to USC other than them letting her be a six-rotation player? Maybe that's all she wanted.

    Two years. (Covid year)

One rumor is that Madi Skinner will join her at USC. Also, being in LA is a draw for some. Asjia said she was jealous of her being in LA. (The team was very supportive of her on IG.)

  6. She came into the program before O'Brien was a thing - she was likely under the assumption (as many of us were) that she was just battling Petersen for the jersey and likely won it during the summer.  Morgan was not even announced into the program until August 6, 2020.

I like Iosia. I really hope she sticks around as DS. Losing the job to a libero from a National Championship final team (MOB), or to a Pac-12 libero of the year (Fleck) are not things to be ashamed about. Just think she needs more coaching and/or experience against teams with tough hitting.

Also, Petersen actually did better as a DS than libero.

  7. The portal is currently being stuffed with setters so I’m not too worried about it. But yes, letting Cabello go was dumb

I wasn’t overly impressed with Cabello, but the sample size was small and could be wrong.
  8. Easier to explain in the context of middle school gym volleyball.  Six players on the floor, rotating clockwise through the serve, right?  Each player occupies one of the six zones and plays the associated position and rotates through them
    LF/4 MF/3 RF/2
    LB/5 MB/6 RB/1

Kudos on the simple explanation for “six-rotation”!
  9. With the portal the way it is, we can easily find an OH rental for a year. I’m really not concerned. I’ll miss Sky Money but there’s OH galore who would be successful in this program and bring some added leadership and defense. Better if it’s a 6 rotation OH grad transfer. They exist. I’m sure we are doing work, since we’ve already addressed 2 big issues in 2021 (setter and libero)

I hope the “rent-an-OH” strategy pans out for 2022. (Not saying it won’t.)
  10. I hope Logan talks her out of it. But man, if she leaves, I hope it’s not Baylor or Nebraska.

Corn, no. They are loaded at the pins. Plus their active fan base are not fans of her. (The latter is more observation.)

For her to develop as a 6-rotation player as is reported, she would need a B1G school (not Corn), maybe Pac-12.
  11. Someone "close" to the situation on VT says it's because she wants to play 6-rotations and that will be a condition to the transfer.  I'm pretty sure that was Lexi's as well when she entered the portal.

Yes it was (at least that was assumed publicly). But this transfer has the potential to be more damaging to the program and team chemistry. Hope I’m overthinking it.

  12. If players like Skylar and Lexi (both #1 recruits coming out of high school) are leaving because they feel they aren't receiving the training to get developed in the backrow, then Jerritt and his staff seriously need to start making changes.

Jerritt appeared to make some strategy changes after the Lexi debacle. Maybe Skylar leaving (or the threat of it) will bring on more changes.
