  1. I requested an absentee ballot because I'll be out of the country all of October and November for work. Does anyone know when the election folks send these ballots out? I had my absentee ballot mailed to my cousin who lives in another state to mail to me in whatever country I'm in when she receives it.

What's your holding period?  Studies have shown that putting it in the market sooner than later pays off in the long run.  If you want market returns you have to accept market risk (volatility).

Indefinitely. Fair enough. There may not be a realistic way to obtain a good return without accepting risk and volatility. I think Laga4 is probably right about a market correction coming. I'm probably going to keep the funds in a money market account that gets about 2% until at least after the November election. I may just invest in some real estate developer deals that provide for a guaranteed return on investment for new apartment and office buildings.

  3. I recently sold a house I inherited and need to invest the equity into something. I don't know much about the stock market, but I've been reading about index funds and they seem like a relatively conservative approach that will at least match the return of the market. To the extent possible, I'd like to insulate the investment from possible future volatility in the market. Any thoughts on how to balance getting a decent return while protecting against the inherent risks of the market?

  4. Lisbon has a really cool food hall owned by Time Out magazine on the waterfront. It has something like 40 restaurants and a massive deaft beer and wine self serve island in the middle. The best food I had in Lisbon.

  5. Episode Six spoiler question.

    Spoiler

Why was he acting like such a bitch in Episode 6 to the smuggler fixer dude? Ryan is surprised that the CIA has to deal with shitty people in this line of work? He was going to blow a major anti-terrorism investigation because he didn't like a bad guy? That episode annoyed me a lot.

I did. I had just graduated from Yale and was on the run from my bookie. I managed to get to La Guardia and take my roommate’s place on the Peace Corps plane to Thailand. Had a good time with a chick named Beth. Met a dork named Tom Tuttle. Fought some drug traffickers and some commies. Not bad, overall.

    Goddamnt. Respek.

  7. And which of those indictments have to do with collusion. Everything that Manafort is being accused of happened long before his association with the Trump campaign. As for the Russians,  some of them are ready to start the trial process and Mueller backed off because he didn't think that any of them would respond. One of those businesses is ready for trial and Mueller backed off. One of those companies didn't exist at the time of the supposed crimes. And he indicted 12 Russians knowing that nothing would happen but those indictments would make people like you think he's getting to the bottom of the collusion probe. Spys gonna spy.Thats a revelation.
If he had anything on Trump collusion, the desperate media would have leaked something by now.
BTW, what is Manafort being charged with.
    Google it you stupid bitch.

This is true. Lots around there.

Fells Point is great. Kislings Tavern for the best crab dip, Max's Taphouse for a hundred beers on tap, Sagamore Pendry Hotel if you're feeling like fancy cocktails, Pitango Cafe for a nice harbor view coffee in the morning.

  9. I'm curious what the legal, practical, and political effect would be if Roe is reversed by a SC with a new Trump justice.

As a legal matter, does the legality of abortion just revert to the states so that it is legal in more progressive states and illegal or effectively so in conservative states? Or something in between entirely legal and entirely illegal depending of the blueish or reddish tint of a particular state.

As a practical matter, would it make a big difference in the availability of abortion? My understanding is that in red states there are few to no abortion clinics so that women have to travel to a blue state to get an abortion. Would a Roe reversal have anything more than a nominal effect on the number of abortions?

As a political matter, does a reversal seismically change the political landscape by motivating people in both camps to fight the issue at the state and federal level? Would women who are pro choice but usually vote GOP for other reasons move in significant numbers to the Democratic party? Perhaps there's no realistic way to predict the effects of such a change in the law. But it's interesting to think of the possibilities.

I'm an engineer, not an electrician, so don't consider this professional advice, but a crude limit would be 80% of max power (80% of 120 V x 20 amp = 1,920 watts).

Running all fans at the same time would be 550 watts (5 x 110 watts).  Starting up a fan will pull more current, so look on the box to see if they quote maximum starting (or inrush) current.  Use 5X that number.  I don't think you'll be anywhere close to 1.920 watts.  That said, it's probably smart to keep the circuit dedicated and just load it with the 5 fans and nothing else.

Thanks for the response. The spec sheet unfortunately doesn't list the inrush current, but I figure I'm so far under the max capacity that that won't be an issue. Plus the fans will be turned on one at a time, so that further mitigates the issue of too much inrush at once.

What model ceiling fan are you looking at? Hampton Bay or Big Ass Fans?

    It's a Hampton Bay Industrial 60" fan.

You're worried about pulling 5 amps on a 20 amp circuit?

I just wasn't sure if the determination was as straightforward as max amp per device x the number of devices. I didn't want to have this journeyman contractor wire up a bunch of fans only to have them constantly tripping the breaker because I didn't understand how amperage calculation works. If it's as simple as adding up the max amperage of all the devices on a circuit, then it sounds like I'm golden. I just wanted confirmation on that.

Are you running a new dedicated circuit?

I have numerous spare dedicated circuits on my panel.

  12. I've been bummed all day about this. You could tell from his shows that he had a gentle and kind soul. In all his years on tv, he was never pretentious, mean spirited, or otherwise negative. He was the everyman that every man (and woman) would love to hang out with and trade stories of travel and food. In these times of ugly politics and dark spirits, he was a breath of fresh air. I never understood all the moaning after the death of Princess Diana, but I definitely understand it after AB's death. I hope you have peace in the after life my friend.

The problem with gun control in the USA is, with 300 million firearms out there, how do you put the genie back in the bottle? You could ban the sale of semi-auto rifles like in the 90s, but there would still be millions of them on the street that you could buy used.

HIghly regulating the sale of ammo would mitigate the usefulness of those guns.
