  1. Daughter was a French literature major at William & Mary with minors in Political science, and had a sweet job lined up at Capital One before she graduated.   A Liberal arts degree is a valuable one if you use it correctly.

    The movie Max Dugan Returns

Jason Robards plays Max Dugan the Returning, wayward, father.

He , and his grandson, played by Mathew Broderick are discussing college degrees.

    Max Dugan suggests philosophy

Mathew Broderick:   Can you make money with a degree in philosophy Mr. Dugan?

Max Dugan:  Oh yeah, if you have the right one .

    This is an interesting topic.

James Jones' The Thin Red Line is not only taken from a Kipling poem but is an allusion to the temporary psychopathy of the combat soldier (they cross the thin red line between sanity and insanity) that underlies much of the novel, based on Jones' combat experience.

I'm not sure the Russian character or even the rabble that may be Russian conscripts necessarily leads to atrocities.  But I am sure the lack of NCO leadership does.  Additionally, rape is about power, according to all the psychologist types, and not about sex.  I imagine that being a Russian conscript is about as powerless as it gets.

    ....and sexless....

Yeah, it’s not a fun experience. I’ve had a couple and I’m not that old.

PSA- (to the other shaggy/surly idiots)

Do it. If you have the insurance or resources get it done. It can literally save your life.

Have a history of colon cancer in our family so I kind of demanded one earlier than they typically do the procedure. The found 3 polyps the first time, 6 the last time, so I'm betting there'll be more Tuesday, hopefully benign.

The reports of widespread rapes are just abhorrent and it's hard for me to wrap my mind around how so many men are capable of raping or tolerant of their comrades raping. I find myself wondering whether the propensity towards rape says something about the character of Russian men or culture of Russia, or if instead that's naive and our soldiers would do likewise if our command structure and discipline were as shitty as Russia's.

Have your seen what the average Russian male looks like ?  They aren't gettin a lot of voluntary action. This was probably touted as a sex tour to some of those conscripts.  Yes I'm burning in hell for making light of rape.

I love Ipe.  Over the years my dad and I had replaced the decking of our 4x8 trailer with marine grade plywood on several occasions.  Finally I said eff it and used Ipe planks.  20+ years of sitting outside uncovered, and zero degradation to the wood other than the color fading. Magical stuff and it's beautiful too.

And in CA. it's a fire rated material (allegedly) as it will only smolder and char, very tough to burn it.  Marine grade plywood really only performs in the vertical I believe.  Nice fucking trailer....

PBS had a series on it called Skinny Skyscraper.  It was pretty interesting.  They built it into behind an Historic building so they had to go under that building (I think it was a Steinway museum or something) and anchor it in that building's foundation.  The foundation concrete pour was a very choreographed event.

They left a few floors as pass-throughs for wind.

Oh yeah, I remember seeing that one. The footprint, and prep was incredibly tedious because of the sliver of a building footprint.

They had a blow out of a form or concrete feed tube.  You gotta have your balls screwed on tight to run that job as a superintendent.

I'm gonna dig way back into my physics here, please correct if I'm wrong:

Damping systems don't reduce the amplitude of the sway, they just keep it from continuing to sway (resonating) when the wind gusts, or the ground shakes?

Also, basement levels below ground lower the center of mass to a height where even when the building sways with max amplitude, the COM won't extend beyond the base, and the building won't topple? For something that tall and slender, it must be one hell of a basement.

Finally, they are built to sway. Better to sway than to break, amirite?

We used to notice water rippling in the toilets up on the 18th (IIRC) floor of Dobie. Period of the sway was so long that you wouldn't be able to feel it, but you could see it in the toilet bowls.

The mass dampening systems counteract lateral force, wind related, sway in a high rise.

That whole equal and opposite reaction thingy I believe.  It reduces the maximum amount of sway to keep it in the acceptable range for people.  Women are more acutely aware of building sway for some reason.

    This.

There's some next-level "WTF" with this.  You mean the word like months upon months of swearing up and down that he had no intention of invading Ukraine?  Or how about the current lies that Russian atrocities are actually Ukrainian forces killing their own people?

I am in the business of dealing with fights involving people who lie.  When you're up against someone who lies as habitually as Putin, let me tell you how often you trust him: never.  Not once.  Not ever.  Not unless and until you have a signed document and a court order enforcing same.  And even then...you don't trust HIM.  You trust the court to enforce things.

Putin will not make any agreement - at least not one he will keep for any length of time - until he is forced to.  This is why we have fistfights, lawsuits, and wars.  Some people literally will NOT do the reasonable thing unless and until they are forced to.  Putin has demonstrated amply that he is such a person.  Any discussion that does not start with "so, understanding that Putin will not agree to anything that he is not forced to agree to" is pure fantasy.

Sub sonic bullet, meet Putins brain pan

    Lord, hear our prayer

Well timed missile meet Putin in his dacha

    Lord, hear our prayer

    Opportunistic garrote around Putins neck

    Lord, hear our prayer

    Die, you bastard die

    Lord, hear our prayer

    Aaaaaaaaaaaaameeeeeeeeeeeennnnnn.....

Maybe the Surly engineers can explain it better, but I'm looking at photos of it, and trying to wrap my mind behind the size (or lack thereof) combined with the height, and looking at the base of it, and it's like "how can a good windstorm not fuck with it?"

They've said it will sway up to 5 feet during storms.....there has to be some kind of massive base going deep underground to keep it anchored, etc.

Massive hydraulic, damping systems in the tower counteract sway. They probably have a few floors blocked off for several of them.

Boy 1 looked at it, beautiful but a bit too fratty for him.  It’s got an interesting back story in that in the late 60s it was on the edge of bankruptcy when a prominent medical CEO, who was an Alumni, made a huge stock gift that was the largest constant dollar contribution ever.  The stock was the company that made the Daikon Shield. Richmond liquidated the stock right away, before the scandal broke, and the school now has an endowment over 3 billion for 4000 ish students.  Fortuitous timing.

Yep all true., AH Robbins family.  Robitussin is how they made their initial strike it rich dollars. Big frat school, good football program, spotty basketball thru the years, but definitely a typical private school student base: frats, daddies money, and BMW's.

Have a very good friend who came out as gay to his parents right after HS. They're Jehovahs witnesses, and threw him out of their home. Richmond gave him a full 4 year ride with full time housing the entire time he was enrolled, so I've always given them high marks for that.
