Jesus you’re apparently not smarter than this. You wrote an entire novel because you completely misinterpreted my post. I simply commented that I wouldn’t have an opinion on this hire just because Saban hired him. That didn’t mean in anyway whatsoever that I think it’s a bad hire. Nor have I anywhere in this thread said it’s a bad hire. I have no opinion on the hire.  Take your sanctimonious bullshit War and Peace post and shove it up your beeper.

Not sure how you think anything below the bolded statement had anything to do with you. I thought it was pretty clear the Saban part was the only thing directed at you. I'm not complaining about your stance on the hire. I'm just pointing out that Saban is getting too much credit. I think I also indirectly pointed out you're a good poster. But go ahead and get all pissed off for no reason.

    Cheers

Not really. Saban ran a system like a manufacturing line. He has written manuals for every position and many processes, so that he can plug any coach into his system. Now that doesn’t mean he doesn’t try to hire good coaches, or that they can’t contribute their own skills in his system. It just means that if he hires someone it doesn’t necessarily mean they are good. In his system they don’t have to be good. See Bill O Brien. See Wiggins.

    You're smarter than this.

Saban won because he cheated. His process can only take you so far.  That was nonsense fed to the media to make him look like the greatest of all time!

And Sark knows his entire system. He coached there.

To the posters jumping off a cliff with ten posts per page while bringing no new information:

A few of you should consider taking a break. I think CTJ and Huckleberry nailed it.

This isn't Watson, Beck, or Stoops. Those guys had proven they can't coach. We don't know anything about this guy. Sark has way more info than we do.

A defensive tackle coach must evaluate/recruit, motivate, and teach techniques. It's not in the same category as a coordinator, QB coach, OL coach, linebackers coach, safeties coach, or even a wide receivers coach. You have to coach way more than technique at those spots. It's not that difficult to get a good feel for Kenny's qualifications in the interview process.

My main concerns on this team are the depth chart at DT left by Bo Davis and our defensive backs running around with their heads cut off. I'm also more concerned with this guy overcoming his resume in the recruiting process than his actual coaching or recruiting abilities. My guess is Johnny Nansen can assist in this process. He has d-line experience and can recruit. Don't forget Johnny Nansen was a nobody until Sark hired him at Washington. It's hard to attract a great tackles coach when the roster is void of future star players. I'd prefer a coach who knows how to find young talent than someone who hires 60-year-olds based on Google search results. Older coaches work sometimes, especially as coordinators. But you need some fresh blood as position coaches to bring energy to the room and someone the kids can relate to.

Let's wait and see how it plays out before calling it good or bad.

Can we finally put to bed the dumb argument that Clemson is going to get left out…

Don't stop there. Over half the posters in the realignment thread thought UW and UO were worthless to the P2. And a growing list thinks Florida State isn't valuable to the SEC.

Anyone moving forward who questions the P2 value of ND, FSU, North Carolina, or Clemson should be banned from posting in the realignment thread.  It doesn't matter what is released in the media. I expect the loser of the UNC and FSU sweepstakes to try and save face by leaking to reporters that the programs don't bring enough value or some other lame excuse.

I think there's a good chance the ACC as we know it will be blown up by the time their ESPN contract runs out in 2027.

The P2/P3 are going to separate from the NCAA very soon. Salary caps are coming. I know this is all obvious, but some don't seem to get it. This is one of the reasons for FSU's temper tantrum.

We really should start posting realignment news in the realignment thread. This thread is starting to bleed over into topics that belong in that thread.

It's going to get interesting in the next 24 months. There's blood in the water.

For decades the cheaters would constantly claim "Texas pays players just like everyone else." Don't get me wrong, I was vocal about how Texas didn't handle it correctly. They should have either joined the cheaters or turned them in. The tactic of not cheating or turning them in but just whining about it to boosters while not letting them pay players was nauseating. But still, the cheaters would always have the same retort when Texas fans pointed out how they were outrecruiting Texas. "You're just jealous, Texas pays players just like everyone else."

    Oh really?

Now that Texas affiliated interests are actually paying players because it's legal (along with a splash of winning), how's that working out for y'all? Fuck 'em all.

The NIL guys apparently want Brennan. Probably going to start getting that more and more going forward where the dudes who pay the players salaries are holding AD’s hostage.

The good AD’s will be able to maintain alignment. The bad ones will get run over.

IMO, defensive coaches rarely make good long-term head coaches in the modern college game, especially at Tier 3 programs. ***(Saban/Smart cheated and they are Tier 1)*** The reasons for this:

    1. It's hard to win with defense at a school that can't recruit top talent.

    2. Evaluating defensive personnel that fits the scheme, with high upside but raw skills is more important than the actual defensive schemes or gameday coaching. Some of this can be done with off-the-field hires. In other words, it's easier to find a defensive coordinator.

On the other hand, offensive coaching takes a more cerebral approach, where scheme and playcalling make a huge difference. One can also argue that offense requires more repetition and timing, so a stable influence is important. You can replace your defensive coach if he is hired away. It is much harder to replace the OC without missing a beat. Stoops (Tier 1) succeeded because he had such a huge offensive coaching tree created by Mike Leach

But if you want to stick to the defensive side of the ball, why hire a guy with very little coordinator experience like Nansen? Barry Odom is sitting out there right now. He's a much more proven commodity and he's got a good OC with him, even if it won't last for long. He has a network of coaches to fill out his staff.

This hire would make no sense, IMO. Players should not determine the head coach. They have no idea what they're doing. They are emotionally invested in their guy.

I'd trust the collective before I'd trust an administrator or a bunch of players, but none of them should be making this decision. It's beyond time for GMs at this level of ball.

I'd hire an offensive wizard with head coaching experience at the lower levels. Kalen DeBoer a few years ago is a perfect example.

I have no problem taking a lottery ticket like Butler late, but given the current portal situation, I’d only sign 2 high school WRs per year.

I don’t expect 2 Wingos every cycle, but maybe a Wingo type 5 star + a fast as shit slot WR would work.

Butler isn't a lottery ticket. He's one of the best HS receiver recruits we've had under Sark. He's got a little DeSean Jackson in his build and style of play, albeit he's probably a tenth of a second slower and needs to continue to develop. Either way, I don't think he's going to be a bust.

I think the receiver numbers are so high because we've struggled to recruit Sark's type at the position. That seems to be changing with Cook, Wingo and Butler in back-to-back classes. Don't forget two of our 2023 targets are coming off injury. They are boom or bust recruits.

We are in a unique position this year with no returning production and an experienced QB. Also, remember Bolden is a specialty piece. His style is unique as a receiver and he's also a special teams threat.

I agree the portal can help at receiver.

How many HS receivers depends on their skillset. If you're landing Dakorien Moore and Ryan Williams in every class then an average of 2.5 to 3 per year (5 or 6 every 2 years) is the number. If you're only landing one of those guys then 3.5 is closer to the number. Some of the top of the line kids will only be here 3 years. Numbers can get thin when one or two kids leave in 3 years and some of the others are busts.

As one poster mentioned, some of the HS kids left behind will transfer.

Receiver is one of the most important positions in modern football, especially if you're looking for elite speed and some length to go with the route running and ball skills.

Recruiting the Dakorien Moore and Ryan Williams types in the high school ranks while looking in the portal for the Silas Bolden and Isaiah Bond type of smaller receivers is probably the best way to go. Find the slot and unique mismatches in the portal.

  10. Bolden is listed at 5-foot-10, 175 pounds on 247Sports and On3.

5-foot-8 on sports reference and ESPN.

The kid has excellent ball skills and explosiveness. He's a mismatch opportunity who can score in the red zone by beating man coverage or making a guy miss in the screen game.

I'd take him and a big target as well. Niblett probably needs more seasoning. Moore has to prove he can hold on to the ball when it counts.

    Cook

    Golden

    Daniels (?)

    Wingo

    Bolden

Good 5 man rotation. Moore can get some time in the right situations.

That was Mack. What was said at the time was that Muschamp, being tired of waiting as the official Head Coach in Waiting attempted a coup. He pointed out to the big cigar motherfuckers that the O was pretty much entirely responsible for the plunge, and essentially forced Mack to get rid of GDGD. Boom wanted to poach Holgorsen from OSU.

Mack put on his silver-tongue used car salesman persona and whined that Holgo the Barbarian was unsuitable for the finer culture of TEXAS, because he was divorced, lived in a Hotel, was known to drink to excess, was known to gamble, associated with female companions of unduly young ages... and, well, you prolly get the idea. Just... unsuitable. I supposed at the time that the cigars decided to humor Mack and let him pick his new OC. He picked Chryst. Chryst said "Fuck that shit" and demurred.

I will agree with those of your who were at least somewhat pleased by the Harsin hire. It might have worked if Harsin had been able to ignore Applewhite's bringing of Mack's messages. Neither Applewhite nor Harsin had the personal strength to face down Mack.

You need to keep in mind that GDGD was always basically nothing more than an extension of Mack and always did exactly as he was told. If it worked, it was all to the credit of Mack; if it didn't work, GDGD accepted the blame. GDGD was never more than about .500 as a coach if he didn't have Mack telling him what to do. When Mack ran out of ideas, GDGD had no help to give.

Mac McWhorter and Greg Davis had mailed it in with their recruiting evaluations and strategy.

BTW, McWhorter returned to coaching this year for the Paris Musketeers of the European Football League.

I think it is a safe assumption that the commissioner of the ACC had the authority to extend the agreement granted to him by the member institutions in advance.

Can you explain how something like that works? If the commissioner can extend the option, shouldn't it state that in the contract? This contract is worth billions of dollars.

I also find it interesting that Texas/OU announced to the SEC the same year this option was extended by the commissioner.

I can see how ESPN would have demanded a GOR through 2036 even if the deal from 2027 to 2036 is just an option. That option is way more valuable (and more likely to be exercised) with the grant of rights in place.

As to why the ACC and its schools would agree to it, it’s exactly the same reason they would agree to it without the option, because ESPN wouldn’t agree to give them as much if they didn’t.

Obviously if somehow the ACC negotiated a the ESPN deal and lied to the schools about the deal in order to get them to sign until now, that would be a different story, but I am very skeptical of such a claim.

Did the commissioner extend the option 4 more years after ESPN missed the 2021 deadline? If he did so without the consent of the members, I think FSU has a case for dismissal of the GOR beyond 2027. This means ESPN missed the contractual deadline to accept the option. But I'm not a lawyer.

Regardless, the ACC front office is shady AF.
