  1. Fuck Mike Love, imo

my favorite off Pet Sounds is maybe Caroline No. But man, Wouldn’t It Be Nice is an all time great opening track and a fairly perfect song.
i was never a teenager in white 1960s middle America, but that album makes me feel like I was

All of this. Couldn’t have said it better. Mike Love is the reason why The Beach Boys stopped progressing and became a novelty/nostalgia act.*

*Also Brian losing it a bit maybe contributed.

  2. And another perfect song this morning.  It may be worthy of another thread, but how many songs are there out there with this literary tone?  Most break up songs are "f you I'm leaving or becuase you're leaving".  There's always an undercurrent of bitterness or animosity.  The opposite is true here.  It might be worthy of a whole other thread topic.  Or, it might just be a very short thread.

I'm not sure whether Ray or Jamey did it better.  You be the judge.  Or maybe you like Elvis's version, or Al Green's, or...

  3. I never get tired of listening to this.  It is a perfect arrangement of a perfect song.   The subtlety of the kiss-off in music and verse is absolutely stunning.  And in this case the band is so tight behind him, but allows Willie to do his Willie thing and jazz it up a bit.  I know I've posted this half a dozen times in various places here it's like a musical deconstructed hamburger.  In any case, here it is again because it fits here.

  4. To that point, Crosby’s book self-justifies his own extramarital adventures. Immediately before deploying he married Jean but while in England he hooked up with a former girlfriend who also found herself in London.

And he was sent to Oxford as the Air Force’s emissary to study the abrupt and powerful societal changes in British society brought about by the presence of so many Americans, especially in light of the vacuum left when English men of fighting age were sent to Africa and other theaters. There, he hooked up with a worldly intellectual lady of noble descent and spent all his available time with her.

After the war, he attempted to confess his affairs but Jean shut him down, effectively saying “what happened in England stays in England.” She bore 4 children and they had a lengthy marriage until her death from Cancer in 1980. He went on to earn a PhD at Stanford and a professorship at Harvard.

American forces were paid roughly 4x more than their British counterparts. “Overpaid, oversexed, and over here” was a valid complaint.

My uncle had a similar deal with my aunt while he was in Vietnam. I asked her about it later, after he’d passed. After getting over the shock of me asking, she said she didn’t begrudge him much when every day held the specter of death. People have needs. I didn’t ask her what it was like being alone stateside with three kids wondering if your husband would make it back. She’s gone now too. Perspective. She had it.

Maybe a bit off topic, but it looks like Paul is back in possession of his original ‘61 Hofner bass, stolen from a van in the 70’s.

    Did he tell you?

So this doesn't seem good. Wonder if it's the gps jamming in Königsberg that's been going on for the last few months or something more to do with online hacking and/disinformation campaigns or maybe new nuclear testing going on?

I wonder if this has anything to do with the hypersonic missiles we saw launched at Kyiv a day or two ago.

The guy has several pictures of him and Joey B. Apparently Mr B grew up down the street from him in New York.

Not to Europe as a whole, but for the small Baltic states, Russia can do a lot of damage to them in the short term with sheer numbers and artillery and drones, but that's only if they can get a ceasefire with Ukraine and rebuild their supplies.

This.  They still aren't out of Ukraine (obvs) and they have done a hell of a lot of damage and much of it irreversible (in human terms).  Of course, Ukraine wasn't a NATO member, but even so, the example is before of us what could be.

Yeah, on a good night Los Lobos is the best band in the world.

Sometimes, though, they go all Phish on me.

Speaking of, this is one of their covers that I never get tired of.  And frankly, I do think it's better than the original. Forgive me if I posted it here before.

  10. Stepping in to defend someone against a lowbrow and classless attack, even if that person is a possible future opponent in an election, is what used to be the norm in this nation. The Republicans can't even muster up some common decency and denounce a dig at an active service member.

Not just anyone either. The spouse of a candidate from their own party.

At the end of WW2 the same thought occurred to many people. The Roosevelt's wife was campaigning for camps to hold all the returning military to be quarantined for a while before letting them back into the country. Soldiers came home and there was no murder or crime spike.

They also had significant time spent out processing and taking boats back across the sea - time to adjust in other words.  Not the camps Eleanor had in mind, but decompressing time nonetheless.  As I understood it, the problems during the war on terror developed from waking up, going to work in a temp building, blowing some people up and then mounting up in the mini-van and picking up the kids from daycare.  Not really analogous situation.

I had a rare Saturday night free and since I had not yet been to the Longhorn Ballroom I decided to go check these guys out. I had low expectations because it is a tribute band of sorts, but man was I wrong. They were fantastic! It wasn’t just guys up there halfheartedly covering Bob Wills, they brought the feeling. The place was packed and people were up and dancing the whole time. A couple of Bob Willis’s relatives were in the audience and got a shout out from the stage. I don’t follow these guys so I have no idea if this was a one off or if they’re touring. But if they are you should check them out. One of the best shows I’ve seen in a long while.
