  1. Not any cussing but my god the amount of dark humor and gallows humor directed at patients, situations, families. I had to cut back. At some point you feel the humanity leaving you.

One of these days I will find a way to do the Circle of Death, Peyresourde, Aspin, Tourmalet and Aubisque. We were going over in 2020, but covid killed it. Alas.

Jesus I had no idea that was a thing.  I did it as two days of two climbs.  The hardest part is the mental part with the road signs that give you % gradient over the next kilometer.  So if you see 10% and the first part of the kilometer is easy, then you know you will get rocked later.

If you are a fan of SAFA Brian he is previewing the tour stages the day before.  Good stuff.

That was a real head scratcher. I know it’s his first TdF, but he’s a grand tour winner.  Maybe he’ll make it interesting.

Yea it was surprising to see Hindley up in that big group.  Since it started with 30 riders maybe they didn't realize it but Wout was in the group and one clip he is clearly going to the back of the initial break to scan jerseys and rider bib numbers.  Plus race radio would tell UAE who is in the group.  Jonas is overall still fine with plenty of big mountain stages left in play.

Tomorrow looks great.  I did Aspin and Tourmalet in the same day a few years ago.  Pau and surrounding mountains are heaven on earth for cycling.  A few cars pulled over on the side of the road on the descent to let me pass on Aspin.

To be clear, my medical treatment was EXCELLENT.  From my first trip to urgent care, to being discharged from the hospital (sans the dead organ) was literally 46 hours.  I think that's pretty good.

If you have the means to pay (insurance or straight cash, homey) our medical system in the US is pretty good.  If you DON'T have the means, I bet it sucks pretty bad.  Just like everything else in the US.  It's a feature, not a bug.  (And I'm not defending at all.

I'm a doctor and I don't even know how the billing works.  Plus the few times I have needed and used healthcare my employer/hospital just doesn't bill insurance as a favor and dissolves the payment (technically illegal) and surgeon and anesthesiologist didn't ever bill me.  It's a broken system.

Well, yeah man. I've got access to millions of miles. I use them whenever I can, and am going to try to get my plane terrified wife overseas next summer. And to make it worthwhile, we'll probably stay many weeks. But even without airfare, hotel, and car rental, it is going to be pretty fucking expensive. Food, drinks, entertainment, and yes the motherfucking shopping for 3-4 weeks is expensive.

Once you are over there trains are cheap.  As can be the beer and food.  The Friday train from Prague to Vienna was like a rolling football tailgate.  You can bring your own booze and lots of parties.  It was like the heart of darkness walking from train car to train car to get the bar.  Only to find the beer had run out.

  6. Also as said before there are great wineries but with kids Carter's Mountain is a better option.  Great views, orchard on the mountain.  More family oriented than a winery.  If you are there Friday night downtown Charlottesville has a pedestrian mall with free concerts every Friday.

  7. Charlottesville has a great food scene.  I would make reservations especially if you are there on a weekend as it is a popular weekend destination.  I like The Local, Oakhart Social, Brassaire Saison, Orzo.  I lived there for a few years and it changed my life for the better (special place).  For breakfast go to Bodo's Bagels (the line moves fast).

  8. At the halfway point. Full report to follow but in Prague Mlýnec was fantastic dining. In Vienna Strandcafe on a floating deck outdoor restaurant on the damed part of the Danube (New Danube on Wikipedia) was great for schnitzel. The locals there get ribs that looked good but we have that in spades in Texas so I got schnitzel and European Budweiser which is not bad. I am surprised the Trip Advisor reviews are terrible but mostly for service and I suspect that can happen when such a large restaurant is packed on a nice day. I would recommend checking out that area in general as well. You can also rent your own floating bar.

Man…the Schotzkammer left me muttering how the peasants should have risen up and beheaded all those imperial bastards.
Honestly, that visceral feeling reminded me that I’m SO American. Fuck you and all of your pointless gold objects that could have fed the entire country, that you only have because your dad is the 5th generation of inbred fuckholes.
    I hate royals.

You all have me excited, be there in a little over a week.  I haven't been out of the country in over a decade so seeing this part of Europe will be cool.

You may not be sure between your use of “fiancé”, “she”, & “banana hammock”.

Wherever you two fall on the map, have fun and post travel photos even you and they aren’t in them.
    ✈️

I'm learning so much on this thread.  Including that I meant fiancee.

  11. Thanks for all this solid advice 956!  I think you sold me on Brevnov Monastery.  I agree it is 3 cities but we are staying with friends and family in Vienna and Budapest so that was the genesis of this trip.  I would love to hit up the Austrian Alps but the weather in May is probably a bit dicey.  I will be getting out on a bike in Austria with a family friend so that should be cool.

  12. Hitting up Prague, Vienna, Budapest in a few weeks. Recs on Prague restaurants and such would be cool. My fiancé (no pics) is from Budapest so I got that part down and can share insights for those going later this summer when I’m back.  She said thermal baths are for tourists but I said nonsense and am packing a banana hammock.

Congrats.  I've had a lot of friends do the ride and they all speak highly of it.

I'm doing a Century ride in July.  Not to benefit anything, but just because I want to.

I’m planning on Asheville Grand Fondo. Climbing is legit.

  14. Charlottesville was mentioned earlier and not getting enough love. 2 hours from DC if you need big city activities or pro sports. Mountains nearby. Good food scene. ACC country so no one cares if you root for Texas. Thinking Durango will be my next move.
